Ok, thanks for the reply. Jadelight also has a little synergy with Avatar because it can get +1/+1 counters.
about the hexproof.. I used 2 Dungrove Elder last year, they're decent enough. Usually a 4/4.. the most I've grown them is a 7/7 in a long game against delve deck - I won that game thanks to the large Elder that he can't kill, and the larger scavenging ooze that grown to 8/8 as it emptied graveyards.. make his two tarmogoyf 1/2, only card type left in graveyards are land.
Hey guys, bought into modern with stompy and am going to my first modern tournament on saturday.
Im running a very similar list like the one posted in the first post. ( except no Canopys and some Dungrove Elders instead of Rhonas). My Sideboard is also very similar to the one posted ( Got some Chokes, Unravel the Aether and a Thrun in addition to that ). I have no idea what the meta is, so Im going into it with a fairly stock sideboard.
Now to the actual question:
1. Are there any basic sideboarding guidelines around?
I can also generally figure out what cards seem good to bring in, its way harder for me to figure out which cards to get out of the main though. I usually would remove some amount of three drops for sideboard cards.
2. For what matchups is the bow in the sideboard?
3. Against lists with aether vial, is it worth brining in all the natural states and pithing needles I got, even if I know its the only target for them? ( e.g. some Humans or Spirits build? )
Thats all for now, looking forward to the tournament and happy for any help
1. I am the one in charge of the primer, and the parts about matchups and sideboarding I haven't got to yet, and sadly I'm very busy with moving in the upcoming weeks, so adding that might take a while.
As for boarding out, I can give some general tips.
Against Storm you need to race, so three drops might be too slow.
Against Ad Nauseam you also need to race, and Dismember and Scavenging Ooze you can board out as well as some three drops.
Against removal heavy decks you might want to board out a few copies of Rancor, since you can easily get 2-for-1ed.
Against Burn you might want to get rid of the Dismembers, since it probably hurts you more than it does any good.
Against Bogles you also want to get rid of the Dismembers. (I don't know if it's worth keeping it in for Kor Spiritdancer)
Against Valakut I'd lose the Dismembers as well, since they don't kill the Primeval Titan and it costs life.
Against control decks, remove Dismember since getting that Remanded hurts so much..
2. The bow is good against decks where gaining life every turn matters, so I would say Burn, maybe Valakut? The deathtouch is also good against giant creatures, so Valakut, Death's Shadow, and Eldrazi. I do not have the bow in my own sideboard, so this is what I would do if I had it.
3. Yes. I would definitely board in some removal for the vials, since they create such an insane tempo gain for them that we can never recover from. Speed is one of our biggest strengths, and it's better to have one dead card in your hand than them having a vial in play. I don't know how many you have in your sideboard, but I would bring in a max of 5. (Pithing Needle can also hit fetchlands, Gavony Township and Horizon Canopy, if you don't have a better target for it. Make sure you play it when they can't crack their land in response for maximum effect. You can also name Mausoleum Wanderer or Selfless Spirit if you're up against Spirits.)
Doesnt the bow seem way too slow for lifegain though; its a 5 mana investment for 3 life. May be too late already. Fair point about the big creature decks. I dont have the bow either, was just curious what people are using it for.

Hi Cireva, welcome to this thread!
I wouldn't sideboard the vines against affinity since it can stop attaching Cranial Plating and Ensoul Artifact which are their most powerful threats. I would put in the stuff you've already mentioned and trying to race as fast as we can. Also we agree that Manglehorn is a good card against an artifact deck.
P.S. Sorry amic, I didn't see that you've already answered
About the bow, it might be good against Burn, but it's not the main card you'd board in against it. It's just a versatile card, and it can still put a lot of pressure on a Burn player, because they HAVE to remove it in order to win. It might be a bit slow, but 3 life every turn means they have to deal 3 damage to you just to break even.
I would also board it out game 3 if it made you win the game: if they board in Destructive Revelry it loses its target (and can only hit Rancor), and Smash to Smithereens becomes completely useless. A dead card in a Burn player's hand is very strong for us, especially when they think it's good against us. If they didn't see the bow game 2, keep it in since they won't board those cards in against us. Again, this is what I'd do if I had it in my side, and you also have to keep track of your opponent after game 2 and see if they board in different cards.
Good to see good ol' Stompy still getting some development love. This was my first Modern deck back in the day - I play Magic more to enjoy myself than to actually try to win tournaments, but because I generally prefer playing established formats (like Modern), I tend to play in events more than playing kitchen table / casual Magic.
Most of the fun for me with Stompy was to show up at events, and beat decks that cost 20 times the price of my pile of uncommons - very satisfying, and way more fun than showing up with an expensive deck and not having such a good day! At various times since my first foray into Modern with Stompy, I've piloted Infect, RG Ponza (another favourite), UR / Grixis Delver, a ridiculous Soulflayer / Vengevine dredge combo deck (which was hilarious when it went off), and lately a RUG Zoo Evolve deck (recently piloted by Sam Pardee on CFB) . . . but I've just dug out the old faithful Stompy deck - still had it sleeved up - and am looking to jam a few games with it again.
Hi Deviant_Esq! We're trying to improve our beloved deck as much as we can by sharing informations about tournaments results and new cards used. I think we had improved it a lot and we will continue to do so!
Keep destroying expensive decks with Stompy and have fun
P.S. I also love the face your opponents make when you beat them with Stompy
Hi,
I've followed this thread since about a year now and played mono-green version usually with 1-3 rexord in local modern events. Then tried white splash veraion and finished 3rd ou of 16 players yesterday with record 3-1. I personaly play 3 paths in main and 2 dromoka's command in main and only 7 fetches.
To matchups; 2-1 vs Grixis Death Shadow
Opponent was not able to answer Rhonas and sideboard Great sable stag.
2-1 vs G/R land destruction
0-2 vs Lantern control (was not prepared for this matxhup)
2-0 vs Abzan.
Thanks amidceep for great ideas for stompy.
Good luck to you all.
Recently I've been trying to take a different approach to the sideboard. I've done this by limiting the amount of non-creature cards. If we keep bringing in these instants and artifacts, we will dilute our gameplan too much. Here are some replacements I've been looking at:
Replace Relic of Progenitus with Loaming Shaman. This essentially eliminates someone's graveyard, or it can screw around with their future topdecks by only shuffling their fetches and their bad matchup cards. It comes on an okay body for what it does, so now we have a creature stapled to our graveyard hate, and that graveyard hate is more versatile. Like I said, we can screw our opponent's topdecks, but I've thought about it, and it has a pretty interesting trick against Lantern Control (which just won the Pro Tour by the way): you wait until they mill most of your deck, then you cast this and shuffle all of your artifact removal into your deck, so you're guaranteed to draw some! Also it stops mill (always be prepared for mill xD)
Manglehorn is pretty self-explanatory. It's a bit slow, so I still like a few copies of Nature's Claim as well.
Just out of curiosity... has anyone tested Lignify? The main issue would be enchantment removal, but it costs 4 less life than Dismember and helps devotion. Sorcery speed, of course (big drawback), but seems like it might be an effective replacement...
I think if we were going to play sorcery speed removal, Utopia Vow would do better for us than Lignify, and Nature’s Way would be better still. But even better is not trying to force sorcery speed removal.
So yeah, not that much, but tell me what you think about Loaming Shaman.
I'd play Wheel of Sun and Moon instead. Also it has 1 more devotion for aspect for 1 less mana, and also it doesn't die to bolt If you want something for BR Hollow One I guess our best bet is Tormod's Crypt as even Relic of Progenitus is slow for that matchup, let alone a 3 cmc card. And for Lantern matchup I don't think you can keep Loaming Shaman in hand as a topdeck hand disruption gets rid of it.
-Edit- Now that I'm thinking, it's the Hollow Ones that are causing the problem, not the creatures that come from the graveyard. Then I guess Relic is superior to Tormod's Crypt still.
I understand what you;re saying, but I'm concerned about bringing in too many non creature spells post-board. To me, a singleton copy of Loaming Shaman can push our graveyard hate over the top when it needs to be, and it has other utility as well. But yes, I'm quite aware of the fact that we already have a lot of graveyard hate in the main.
Against BR Hollow One, I'm not too sure if graveyard hate is necessary. This deck tends to be particularly resourceful with the graveyard, but it does not rely on it. The mainboard hate should be sufficient in this matchup. It would be like bringing in graveyard hate against control; it wouldn't be bad, but a creature would often times be better. However, if the list runs Vengevine, I guess extra graveyard hate would be a good choice.
That and when he was initially introduced there were less answers to him. I mean black has min three answer cards now. They aren't always the greatest but dreadbore could see more play. BBE on the other hand is the one we REALLY want to either splice in or be cautious of. The ability to come in and either add another roadblock or top cast another removal without paying for it can be brutal.
Is there a reason we're not using Sundering Growth for artifact/enchantment removal? Has the additional benefit of copying any one creature we control, still just a 2 drop like many of the others in the slot...If I really wanted to I could destroy my own Rancor to get another Baloth. Not sure if I'm missing something but seems like a better version of Naturalize and has great synergy with our archetype. I'm gonna be trying this.
Sundering Growth only copies tokens. Natural State costs 1 less mana and for big artifacts/enchantments (or vial chalice on 1) Deglamer/Unravel the Aether have the benefit of also tucking cards that give us problems either in the graveyard or on their way to the graveyard (e.g., Wurmcoil Engine).

Quick follow-up question:
Whats your affinity sideboard plan? We got Gut Shot, Creeping Corrosion, Natural State and Pithing Needle.
I assume we take out some 3 drops the Dismembers and some Vines of Vastwood maybe?
