Hey guys. First time poster. A big fan of Hollow One. This is the version of Hollow One I play. I like to put my own little spin on things...so I'm not saying this is better than the stock version, but it's the most efficient version of my own brew's, that I have tested.
I really like Death's Shadow in this deck. It's great with flamewake and TBR if you include them. I have managed to turn 1 DS with this deck, which was fun! It's also great against GY hate. The deck can lose a fair amount of life on it's own...so adding more fetches and Thoughtseize makes DS a nice fit. I have found out you really have to be carefull with losing life for DS though because unlike a traditional Death's Shadow deck we don't run as much removal/discard, so you need to be wary of burn spells and getting attacked on the backswing.
Im running 3 Lingering Soul's also. I really like it in heavy removal/control matchups. Also, very evasive and can be good chumps in the air.
My sideboard is standard but I have replaced 2 Grudge's with Stony Silence.
If you guys have any suggestions, let me know! I'm always willing to test new cards. Thanks!
The problem with Faerie is that removing 2 cards is not enough in most matchups where you want GY hate:
Dredge
KCI
Living End
Storm
It can work in the mirror where you only need to take care of Bloodghast and Phoenix and sometimes stop a Snapcaster Mage vs UW but it's use is more niche and even then, we don't actually need this kind of effect to beat UW and faerie is not going to stop our opponent from casting Gurmag Angler so there are better tools for those matchups (Thoughtseize for UW and Ancient Grudge + Leyline for the mirror)
Also, Leyline is able to slow a lot of decks like Mardu Pyromancer (no Lingering Souls flashback nor Bedlam Reveler makes them quite slow) where Faerie can only be useful to exile Lingering Souls (and only if the opponent sequences badly as they can Looting and then cast Souls without passing priority)
So how do you guys feel about Liliana of the Veil in this deck? I run 3x Angler's and 1x Tasigur, I'm thinking about cutting an angler for liliana. Thoughts? Also, Damping Sphere vs Blood Moon, What do you guys got?

The thing is, Liliana is a 3-mana card (that's an issue) that doesn't do much regarding our strategy, at best we are discarding 1 more card each turn to pump Adept or reduce the cost of a Hollow One, I think you should be better keeping Angler in the deck as it does more relevant things an will almost always cost 1 or 2 mana.
In the sideboard I don't play Damping Sphere nor Blood Moon but I think the Sphere would probably better as you can play it on turn 2 when you are on the draw and still prevent your opponent from having 7 mana on turn 3, which you can't with Blood Moon, and also the fact that Sphere is good vs Storm, and that's a a deck that I expect to see a lot now that Dredge is dominating the format since it has a good pairing versus it.
I've been haunting both this thread and the Soulflayer thread recently, some some Soulflayer decks have recently started to use Bomat Courier and/or Hollow One. It's beginning to make me consider putting Soulflayer into a Roulette build in place of Gurmag Angler / Tasigur. Soak up some haste from a Bomat (or if the deck is still running them, Bushwhacker) or Haste+Flying from Flamewake Phoenix. Would make for a smashing turn 2, to have a 4/4 haster attacking.
Just gonna requote this here. Me in March. Post 161 here.
I tried it. It went awkward. I tried playing the deck like H1 and it worked well. I tried playing it as a would a soulflayer deck with more GY digging, and the deck would wind out and not regain steam. I also had some funky self auto Armageddon that should not have happened as frequently as they did (Kept a 4 land hand with loot, flyer, lore. drew into more lands and got the value cards random-ed into GY). the Flayer is too weak without protection, and there is not enough value in the keywords that are in the deck naturally. The lifelink/deathtouch was very relevent in most of the games, it stabalized my lifeloss and provided a fair blocker.
G1 mono Red Rampup prowess build. I had great hands and put early clock on him forcing him to use his burn on my Flayers giving them -1/-1. the lifelink kept me active as I rebuilt.
G2 Boggles loss, no interaction that I could muster, Hollow flayer does not put out the en-mass effect as great as H1 does. Overall a bad match-up.
G3 4c collected company good stuff. The games were close but it came down to more of a slug fest. Speed & wide of H1 would have won here, Soulflayer came out but with out words it is just a 4/4.
Overall the soul flayer feels easier to play over the Angler but without keywords is a weak card. Zepata the dinosaur is an extra card that does nothing and encourages GY hate and creates bad draws later.
relevent keywords that could help Deathtouch and Lifelink, haste and first strike.
I did test the list last night and Maximize Velocity is very interesting. Having the bedlam feels great, they act like Gurmags stapled with Ancestral Recall and they also boost the Adepts. I must admit that the manabase and the sideboard both look like a train wreck though. I did lost a game or two because of the Copperline Gorges.
I am testing something very similar but with a few tweaks:
I am just not convinced about Bedlam Reveler as it seems clunky in the games were you are having trouble finding your loot effects and it makes us weaker to graveyard hate, I also have concerns about how early can we play it and if that could slow us down too much although I have to admit that it seems great in topdeck mode, maybe it's worth a couple slots.
I don't like the manabase too much as Copperline Gorge coming into play tapped could be a problem if we need to hardcast an Arclight Phoenix or if we need that 4th mana to cast our 3rd spell for the turn. Since we would be mostly mono-red, we could go with some more basics and just splash a couple green shocklands for SB cards.
I think we'd rather play 4 Street Wraith to have the Faithless Looting + Street Wraith into Hollow One T1 potential, in a build with Manamorphose it becomes even more useful to thin the deck and we have an incentive to be cycling cards already so I think this should be an auto 4-of.
I am not sure about Shrine of Burning Rage, the card seems good vs control but is not a matchup that comes that often (I haven't playtested too much, just a couple of leagues but I think there was only 1 matchup where I sided them in)
I've been toying around with Runeflare Trap as a 2 piece main and 1 in the chamber for decks that like to draw cards. The new phoenix deck, mirror, kci, dredge, storm, and sometimes even uw control. I've only tested a mere 10+ games so I don't have any real data to support my testing. Just that it could be another way to race combo decks that can keep pace or better. Plus it works with Burning Inquiry. 4, 5,6,7 damage is pretty spicy for 1 mana. I'm not quite sure if this deck has the proper shell to maximize it however.
Hi guys , I am sorry for asking but, actually I own the SaffronOliver Budget Variant from the MonoR Hollow One Deck  so now, I am able to invest 50$ what do ya think would be the first and best choices for Upgrading it?
I would get another Goblin Lore. Lore, to me is a 3-4 of card. Flamewake Phoenix I'm guessing is not there due to the lack of 4+ power dudes?
Are you planning on the deck being non-budget long term?
You could do RB pain lands, and start getting fetches and a blood crypt to run the BR mana base as well. The pain lands are a reasonable substitute for fast lands.
I agree with Ninja.
I would work to get into Black mana. I love the Phoenixes but can see the hesitation. They can be hard cast easy enough. I would try to get some lightning bolts, maybe a fatal push. There are a lot of nice new cards coming out that could change the way this deck works in the future. Dreadhorde Arcanist and Neheb, Dreadhorde Champion could be picked up when they release (they will probably shoot up in price first week out).
Reckless bushwacker goes so well with burning-tree emissary. I'd ditch the hellsparks.
For the SB... there are lots of budgets options that would improve it. Ancient grudge is cheap, instead of smelt. Nihil spellbombs over tormod's. Terminate over roast. I actually don't mind the stone rain (Tron?), since blood moon is pretty expensive and trophy too.
If you could try to squeeze a few bolts in the SB, that'd be good too, push would be better.

I need advices for BGmidrange and freewin Red (chalice, bridge, planeswalkers) matchups.
I don't want to loose against these 2 specific matchup.

Modern: Bogles // 8-Whack/Goblins // UW Titan // Hollow One // Affinity // Dredge
EDH: Nissa, Vastwood Seer // Atraxa, Praetor's Voice // Meren of Clan Nel Toth
Yes that's the plan, on long term I will get out of this budget style.
Actually the most what is hurting me in the deck are the Prized Amalgam and the Scourge Devils...
But then I dont really need the Hellspark Elementals after that...
That's a bit weird and it makes the deck much slower as it should can be....
I would work to get into Black mana. I love the Phoenixes but can see the hesitation. They can be hard cast easy enough. I would try to get some lightning bolts, maybe a fatal push. Cause I thought a long time and I had the Idea of pimping up the Deck a bit, but without fetches, cause I can't really afford them.
What do ya say to the idea,
I know the Sideboard is real low budget, but for the start I think it is ok.
