Was just introduced to this deck and started with testing your list. I think this deck has some real potential and I'll be testing it quite a bit myself soon. Hope you had luck with it today.
I tried out Telling Time in place of Peer Through Depths and really liked that I could find lands and ramp artifacts. Also, using a fetch land to shuffle away bad cards was useful, as previously mentioned. I also tried out Mystic Speculation and I'm currently not sure whether to play 1 or 2. It's incredible to setting up draws and the buyback is often very relevant. I've ripped through as many as 9 cards to find my combo pieces in a turn. The fact that it doesn't draw though is annoying at times.
Well, I ended up in 30th place out of 103 with a record of 4-3 (Would have been 5-2, at 16th place if it wasn't for me punting my last match.
Round 1 vs Leo with Esper Gifts (Unburial Rites/Iona package)
Game 1: I won the die-roll, and he mulled to six. I started off with a darkslick Shores into serum visions drawing an angel's grace, scrying a land and lightning storm to the bottom. I then played a turn two pentad prism and we played draw, land go for the next three turns. At the end of my turn 5, he plays gifts for an Unburial Rites and an Iona, forcing me to bin both. He then flashes back the rites on his turn, and I combo off in response. He has a spell pierce, but my pact of negation wins me the game
Game 2: I keep a hand of scalding tarn, lotus bloom, sleight of hand, simian spirit guide, pentad prism, pact of negation, Clique. He starts off with an inquisition, which strips me of my lotus bloom. I then proceed to crack my tarn, sleight of hand into two nonland cards, and sit helplessly as a turn five iona beats in my face
Game 3: I keep my starting seven, and this game goes much like game 1. He goes for gifts at the end of my turn. And unburial rites with four mana open. I combo off in response drawing my deck, and he allows it to go through. I cast lightning storm discarding nine lands, which he mana leaks. I pact it. He then spell pierces it. I pact it. He then casts mindbreak trap...And lo and behold, I pact it.
Win 2-1
Overall Record: 1-0
Round 2 vs Will Smith (Not kidding) with UR twin
Game 1: He wins the die roll, and no one mulls. He starts off with an island into a sleight of hand. I start off with a fetch into an island, followed by serum visions. I then suspended a lotus bloom. He plays a sulfur falls, followed by a serum visions, then passes. I crack another fetch, this time fetching a hallowed fountain untapped. I then pass the turn. He plays a land and passes. I peer through depths at the end of turn, grabbing an angel's grace. I then play a land and pass it back. He does the same. At the beginning of my turn, lotus bloom came out of exile. I just play a land and pass. He flashes in a pestermite at the end of my turn. I combo in response

Game 2: He starts off with an island into serum visions. I start off by suspending two lotus blooms, playing a Darkslick Shores and inquisitioning a pestermite out of his hand. He follows up with a land and a sleight of hand. I play a land pentad prism on turn two, then pass it back. He plays land go, so I go on the defensive. I cracked a fetchland for an island then passed, keeping back a pact and a mystical teachings, along with an angel's grace. He flashes in an exarch at the end of my turn, tapping one of my lands. He then goes for a kiki on my turn. I pact it. I then play mystical teachings at the end of turn, fetching a ad nauseum. I stack the upkeep triggers so that the lotus blooms come out of exile, giving me six mana to win with the pact trigger on the stack
Win 2-0
Overall Record: 2-0
Round 3 Vs. Andrew with U/R storm.
Game 1: I win the die roll, he mulls once. I start off fetching a watery grave with my fetchland. I then play a serum visions, followed by suspending a lotus bloom. He went steam vents into a sleight of hand, then passed. I played a pentad prism, then passed, set up for a nice turn four win. He went off turn 3.
Sideboarding

-2 Mystical Teachings
-2 Peer Through Depths
+3 Inquisition of Kozilek
+2 Relic of Progenitus
Game 2: I mull a five land hand away for a four land hand with an inquisition and a ad nauseum. I decide to keep it against my better judgement, figuring that mulling to five on the play isn't going to help any more than this. I lead with an urborg into an inquisition, which lets me strip his hand of a pyromancer's Ascension. This slows him down signifigantly, but my hand doesn't help me much. I end up taking three seven storm grapeshots to the dome.

Round 5 vs Terrance with Jund
Game 1: I won the die roll, and kept a hand of two angels grace, a darkslick shores, a hallowed fountain, an island, a pentad prism and a serum visions. I start off with a darkslick into a serum visions, drawing a slaughter pact, then passed. He inquisitioned, taking one of the graces. I then played the fountain and prism and passed. He dropped a land and a bob and passed. I topdecked a phyrexian unlife, which I played. He flipped a bloodbraid off of his bob trigger, which he then played, cascading into a second bob. He swung at me for five, but I used the slaughter pact to kill off his bloodbraid. I then topdeck an ad nauseum, which would have given me the win... Had I remembered my pact trigger (This proved to be the second most humiliating pact related death today)

Game 2: I keep my hand, and Start off by suspending a lotus bloom. I then play a seachrome, followed by a sleight of hand. He plays a land and passes. I do the same. He then plays a bob and passes. I play an unlife and pass. He plays a maelstrom pulse to blow my unlife and beats with bob. I play a sleight of hand, putting an ad nauseum into my hand. He drops a liliana, and forces me to discard, but an angel's grace and an ad nauseum remain as the last two cards in my hand.
Game 3: I keep a hand of two lands, two lotus blooms, a grace, a serum visions and a peer through depths. He starts by thoughtseizing the grace out of my hand. I play a land, then visions into a spirit guide, scrying an ad nauseum to the top and a land to the bottom. I then suspend the two blooms. He plays a turn two goyf and passes. I play a second land, then pass. He plays an inquisition, but ends up just grabbing the peer. He then dropped a bob and swung. I then topdecked an unlife and played it, then passed. He played a blightning, which made me discard a spirit guide and a land. I comboed out the following turn.

Round 6 vs Tom with Domain Zoo.

He played a land and a steppe lynx, then swung in with the ape. I played a hallowed fountain untapped and passed. He played a fetch and swung in with the ape and lynx. He then cracked the fetch for a steam vents after I declared no blocks. I pathed the lynx with those on the trigger on the stack and took 2. I played a fetchland and passed. He swung with the ape again, then played tribal flames to put me to 8. I cracked a fetch and comboed out on turn 4.
Win 2-0

Round 7 vs Andrew with Jund
Again not many notes on this match, but I remember the basics.
Game 1: He won the die roll and started out by inquisitioning a lotus bloom out of my hand. This slows me down to the point where I end up having to use my angel's grace to survive against a double goyf beatdown. He then proceeds to bolt me during my upkeep.
Sideboarding
-2 pact of negation
+2 Path to exile
Game 2: Clean turn five win, don't remember much else
Game 3: This was the screw up that cost me top 16. It's turn 4, and lightning storm is in my graveyard do to a thoughtseize. I have a lotus bloom exiled with two time counters on it. I have a hand of two angel's grace, a spirit guide and an ad nauseum. I'm staring down a putrid leech and a goyf. swinging at me. I am forced to slaughter pact the goyf, and I go down to seven. He plays a treetop village and passes. During my upkeep, I am forced to tapout during my upkeep to pay for the pact. Right after I tap my lands and draw, I realize I had a spirit guide in my hand, which I could have exiled for mana, allowing me to leave a white open and play angel's grace to survive the turn, and combo out the next. But, I forgot, and thus I lost
lose 1-2
Overall 4-3 (30th place)
What I learned
-This deck is actually very solid. It can win through discard, active lilianas, counters, and the beatdown
-Pay attention to your pacts, It could cost you a game (Or two :()
-Spellskite is a pain in the neck to deal with
-Always combo off at instant speed if possible
-The storm matchup is pretty much a race, cut out any extraneous pieces postboard.
Happy brewing guys, I hope you enjoy this deck as much as I do.
Hi all, I just built this deck online and I have only played 2 matched with it so far. The first match was in a 2 man queue and my oppenent conceded to me both games as I casted Ad nauseum. The second match I was playing in the practice area and when I went to play lightning storm from my hand I never got an opportunity to discard lands to it. How does the card lightning storm work when playing online? I don't want to enter a tournament if I can't figure out how to adds charge counters to my win condition.
Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
I don't think so, Lightning Storm has a triggered ability while the spell is on the stack , and trickbind causes you to only hit by 3 damage.
You are incorrect sir. It's an activated ability. I use Pithing Needle naming Lightning Storm and the opponent has to get an answer to that when draws his deck.
Pretty sad to see this deck go from developing competitive to deck creation. It's one of the more resilient combo decks out there in my opinion. I was playing an untuned list and was sideboarding wrong (it cost me a few games) at the PTQ in Burnsville, MN and placed 55 out of 169. Lost to U/W Polymorph Tokens, U/W Merfolk, Some type of G/B Discard deck, and elf combo. I beat Storm, Boom/Bust, Bant Aggro, and Delver Discard.
After some tweaking I think I came up with a much better list:
(Mystical Teachings is a must have in this deck and adding a Conflagrate as a secondary win con I believe is important against hate)
EDH/Commander
Olivia Voldaren
Sigarda, Host of Herons
Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer
Jhoira of the Ghitu
Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord
Edric, Spymaster of Trest
Grand Arbiter Augustin IV
Rosheen Meanderer
Ghost Council of Orzhova
Vela the Night-Clad
But why conflagrate? What hate does it dodge? Pithing Needle?. I'd rather play something like Laboratory Maniac+ something with cycling to get around Leyline and spellskite.
Conflagrate is great against life gain decks since it can deal more damage and anyone who is going to make you discard Lightning Storm, pithing needle it, etc... Most of the time you will be winning through lightning storm but sometimes you run into an "OH NO" moment and conflagrate will win you the game. Plus this secondary win con only takes up one slot while making the deck more resilient.
Patrician's scorn and Echoing Truth takes care of any enchantment hate and you can Slaughter Pact or Damnation Spellskite or just have enough lands available to redirect Lightning Storm.
Laboratory Manic is a terrible plan in my opinion because its a creature susceptible to removal and having to run cycling stuff dilutes the deck. If you really want to play a deck that wins through Laboratory Manic play LockSmith Eggs. He's an all star there.

I watched this deck take second place in a modern PTQ yesterday. It used Conflagrate and Seismic Assault as win conditions.
He lost the final game on 16 life by being forced to Ad Nauseam without Unlife or Grace. He hit Spirit Guide, Teachings, Teachings, Ad Nauseam on the first four cards to lose.

I just made top8 in a 183 person ptq yesterday with lightning storm as my only win con in the deck.
Congrats! Please do a tournament report if you can.

After playtesting online, I've come to love this deck and will be putting it together IRL, but I have a very small collection as I sold most of my cards a few years ago and will be building on a budget.
Apart from the Pact of Negations, the rest of the deck is pretty cheap, but the manabase racks up a fair bit. What would you suggest as a budget manabase for this deck until I can get some rav duals and fetch lands? I was thinking just running Adakar Wastes, Underground Rivers, City of Brass...maybe Sunken Ruins to make sure I get the double black? But as cheap as possible. Thanks.
this deck is freaking sweet. my only question is why not run multiple wincons? you can have your singleton lightning storm, a conflagrate, seismic assault, AND laboratory maniac. i dont know how to squeeze more cards into the deck, but having multiple ways to win like that seems really strong, especially if you get thoughtseize'd.
The thing I noticed is that you don't want too many win cons because what you really need to draw is the Ad Nauseum/Angel's Grace or occasionally Ad Nauseum/Phyrexian Unlife.
I tried the deck in a Modern ThNM. There were 8 players.
Round 1 vs. Bant (the guy I gave a ride to). Game 1, I keep a hand with Ad Nauseum and 2 Lotus Bloom. He puts pressure with a Qasali Pridemage. When he taps out for Elspeth, I Ad Nauseum. I get Angel's Grace, many other cards, and another Ad Nauseum. I go off next turn. Game 2, he tries to Spell Pierce a Phyrexian Unlife. I use 1 of 2 Lotus Bloom to stop that. I end drawing the Angel's Grace after Unlife saved me (at -1 and 8 infect). I combo off and win, still with Pact of Negation in my hand. He had only 3 lands in his hand. 2-0.
Round 2 vs. "Dredge" (Vengevine/Hedron Crab/etc.). Game 1 I keep a hand with Lotus Bloom and the combo. He has a really fast hand and has me at lethal next turn, but I have the combo easily with Pact of Negation backup. The next game, he puts just a little pressure on, but after a bunch of search, I can't find Ad Nauseum or Angel's Grace. I finally see Ad Nauseum and it goes land, Phyrexian Unlife, Phyrexian Unlife, Ad Nauseum. I am too low to win. Angel's Grace was my VERY next card. The next game, he gets turn 4 Vengevine X 2 after playing his 2nd and 3rd Lotus Cobra on turn 3. I end up having to use the Angel's Grace in my hand to stay alive. My next draw was Ad Nauseum. I may have lost this game because I sided out a Phyrexian Unlife and left in 2 Pact of Negation even though after dredging a bunch in game 2, it was obvious he had no countermagic. 1-2.
Round 3 vs. UR Storm. This game was vs. a Judge. Game 1, he goes off turn 5 after I keep drawing lands. I fail to see Ad Nauseum or enough search. He does lethal Grapeshot to me. I do Angel's Grace. I lose next turn to another Grapeshot. Game 2, I keep a hand with Infest, lands, Angel's Grace, Pentad Prism, and something else. My first draw was Leyline of Sanctity, which maybe I should have mulled into. He goes off on turn 2, but luckily I have Angel's Grace to save myself. Then on turn 3 before I can play the Leyline on my turn 4, he does the lethal Grapeshot. 0-2.
I finish 1-2. I made a few SB mistakes, but think I played pretty decently.

Thanks for the advice, Illicit. Originally, I felt like I should play more than 1 Peer through Depths (hence why I cut a Mystical Teachings for another Depths). Your list seems really tight. I will probably try that next Thursday as I really want to do it with this deck. I was getting 1st with Caw Blade pretty easily, but Caw is pretty boring.
Vs. UR Storm, I felt that I had to keep a hand that covers 1 of his win cons; Infest vs. Empty the Warrens. I initially considered mulling, but felt like this hand was my "best chance." If I had known he would have Grapeshots and not EtW, I would have been sure about mulling.

You are incorrect sir. It's an activated ability. I use Pithing Needle naming Lightning Storm and the opponent has to get an answer to that when draws his deck.

Hey! I know you!
Really?
No, not really, I just like saying that.
He lost the final game on 16 life by being forced to Ad Nauseam without Unlife or Grace. He hit Spirit Guide, Teachings, Teachings, Ad Nauseam on the first four cards to lose.

Thanks.

Norin the Wary, Grimgrin, Adun Oakenshield (taking forever to build)(dead format for me)Vs. UR Storm, I felt that I had to keep a hand that covers 1 of his win cons; Infest vs. Empty the Warrens. I initially considered mulling, but felt like this hand was my "best chance." If I had known he would have Grapeshots and not EtW, I would have been sure about mulling.
