All the best decks are cheap sans zoo. Why is this a problem?
Because they're all combo, and haters gonna hate. Personally, I'm ok with the current state of things, as I can play all kinds of janky combo decks for cheap.

Combo is a part of magic. If you cant deal with combo then your not a magic player.
it seems like anyone with a budget is forced to play one color and one color only. and even then the deck prices from scratch are high. take death and taxes for example. one color, simple, cheap cards. most expensive card in it is aether vial. yet it is still an average of $150 to buy from scratch. that's a lot of money for cardboard.
Seems like e market is full of hoarders..those with Modern staples insist on selling high. Those looking for staples are not willing to buy at these inflated prices.
As a result cards are struck in files & pple can't join modern wirhout getting those cards.
If the store owner says that I can't trade in the premises, I'll just go outside. If he says that I can't trade within 10m of his premises, I'll go to 11 meters. If he says that he doesn't want to see me trading, I will put a basket over his head and continue trading.
Yes, he's a local legend. He's only known to take his clothes off before he goes into the Ladies' Lockerroom. Nobody knows what he does in there because he's invisible, but it's almost certainly tons of masturbating.

It is currently a speculator's market. There are a lot of people who are buying up cards left and right without a thought for how the cards actually fit into real, competitive decks. I mean, look at Leveler. One card gets announced in a new set and bam, this guy multiples in value about 1000% in one night. Similarly, whenever any Starcitygames.com writer mentions ANY Modern tech card in one of their articles, within 6 hours that thing is sold out on SCG and sees diminished stocks across the internet.
Thankfully, I doubt this will last. Some of the dual lands have already settled at reasonable prices, and they will hopefully continue to do so. Reprints are obviously needed more than ever, but that won't be coming for a while (barring a Goyf reprint in INN, but that seems extremely improbable for a lot of reasons).
Overall, the format is still cheap compared to Legacy, and has competitive prices with both Standard and old Extended.
I'm guilty of buying into levers based on a spoiler. But hey 8 for 6 bucks?! And Now Im getting a couple shocks. It's gonna take time but I'll get my damn paper deck built! Thank god there are no tourneys in my area right now.
Modern decks are expensive: but you will be able to play them for years without losing value. And it is still a lot cheaper than legacy.
this. I also believe that the ceiling will fall on most cards. Most of whats happening breaks the rules of supply and demand a bit so the prices of most cards are just getting artificially inflated. Cards that are seeing a ton of play however will always be more expensive due to the lower supply as people swipe them off the market. Reprints for these cards in some form of a modern expansion similar to the commander decks could fix this.
My idea is to cards that have been staples in the past extended or standard and make some new copies under a different expansion. Then sell these in booster packs that are only modern/eternal format legal. The card pool would be relatively high enough and some cards that should be worth more like goyf, bob,ect can be mythic rares while more vanilla staples like lands can be rares.
It would effect the market value of big ticket items a bit, but retailers should be able to sell enough booster packs to recoup most of their loses from having to sell cards at lower prices. The booster pack doesn't need to be made limited balanced so any cards could be possible.
In the end; cards would be cheaper for use players, retailers wouldn't really lose much money as long as they sell several of the new modern boosters, and finally wotc could easily make quite a bit of money. Lets face it we are in a recession, and the first thing people drop is expensive hobbies which I'm sure doesn't help Hasbro's stock. If MTG starts becoming to much of a money pit it could be canceled by Hasbro as well as other parts of wotc.

i really hope prices go down soon.
LOL @ $150 being a lot for a competitive deck. Not sure what format you've been playing bro. I would cry tears of joy if I could play competitively in any format for $150.

It's really too bad about Zen Fetches, because I think without Zen fetches being in the format shocks wouldn't have been THE default land except in decks where basic land types matter.
Other lands such as filters, fast/slow lands could have had thier day. Now except for decks that have no use for the fetching, or can't afford the life loss shocks are THE default land.
I know fetches sold Zen, but I honestly think it was bad for Modern.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.

If you can't afford $150 for a magic deck, then you need to just stick with draft. Seriously. $150 is the cheapest top level magic decks ever get, and that's been true since the beginning when original duals were only $10.

WoTC, thank you for finally announcing the Modern format, an eternal format where everyone can participate.
My idea is to cards that have been staples in the past extended or standard and make some new copies under a different expansion. The card pool would be relatively high enough and some cards that should be worth more like goyf, bob,ect can be mythic rares while more vanilla staples like lands can be rares.
So a new Chronicles? The idea was the same so player could get their hands on Legends and other good cards from Arabian Nights and such. However, in the end, most people didn't want white bordered cards...lol
I really dont like the "reprint coz expensive" arguments outside of from the vault. A new chronicles would be fun, but only if it was allowed in standard.
(gramps pants on)
back in the day when unglued came out and we all played in arena, we jumped at being able to pull out our ABU duals. Price went up on some crazy cards, but we just scanned through our inquest/scrye for the right prices and trade accordingly. And those were some of my favorite tournaments ever. Every game was fun. I really wish they would do more with tournament flavor.
I personally think that WotC should make it so that no card in modern is above $20 average on the secondary market and no mana fixing land is above $10 but that is just me thinking that accessibility to a format makes it a healthier format.
Now foils, let those be hundreds of dollars for all I care.
So WotC is supposed to reprint things solely based on how expensive they become in the secondary market? Not only is that one of the worst ideas I've ever heard, it kind of sounds like communism.

LMAO I can't remember a time in the history of Magic where a Tier 1 deck in any format could be built from scratch for $150.
1 cheap deck is aggro elves. It's an underplayed deck and is very effective. The most expensive card is joraga warcaller which goes for 1 TIX each on mtgo, and some GSZ.

Yes, communism
More like, they realize they can make more money if more people are playing in tournaments and if tournament staples are reprinted, people will buy them up. I remember in the day when very few cards were over $20 for the external Extended and none were over $50.

you should like a republican from last century. As a basic idea communism works and is a slight part of our system. That's why republicans are always trying to kill medicaid/medicare and other programs that help keep poverty down in this great country. They are fear mongers using it to line the pockets of the wealthy and control the mass into submission.
More on topic prices should be cheap. These aren't just collectable cards baseball cards. It is a TCG, and you can't get enough numbers if you don't have many people buying into the G part of TCG. Not only does lowering secondary prices ramp up revenue for wotc, but it gives them a chance to increase sells of future sets even specially marketed sets.
