I've not been back to magic all that terribly long but enjoy the idea of modern and even have built a mediocre modern deck that emulates a deck I used to play many moons ago...however am not overly familiar with the format.
at the prerelease for RtR, playing Azorius I pulled 2 Sphinx of the Chimes and got to thinking about the card inbetween rounds.
How viable of an idea would it be to run the sphinxes with a large quantity of Relentless Rats to basically ensure the capability of drawing out one's deck and either winning with something like Laboratory Maniac or Psychic Spiral
The idea sems a bit goofy/silly and doesn't necessarily have to be Good just viably playable/fun
I can tell you right now that it won't be competitive because resolving a 6 mana permanent is tough in Modern, and having to fill your deck with sub-par cards just to make your combo work cripples you.
For one thing, if you're already running a lot of Relentless Rats, casting all of them and beating face is a better plan than trying to use them in a combo which hinges on a 6-mana permanent.
You might be interested in the following combos: Relentless Rats + Thrumming Stone Sphinx of the Chimes + any Dredge card(s) (it's not as bad as Rats because those cards have secondary functions outside of being combo pieces. E.g. Darkblast is removal. Plus, if you cast them early and draw a second copy later, you can use the dredge ability on your next draw step to return it to hand so that you can combo off. Lastly, Dredging can help you cheat Sphinx into play, via a flashbacked Unburial Rites.) Zombie Infestation + Treasure Hunt (the composition of the deck is kind of the same, only that instead of filling your deck with Relentless Rats, you fill it with lands and Treasure Hunt instead.)
Well for the dredge aspect the sphinx is godly. You pitch 2 to pay the cost. Then dredge the 2 back to your hand. Keep repeating the combo until your deck is in the grave and hand. Then cast that flashback fireball with x as the discard.
Not sure if modern viable but makes ventage dredge better.
