No, SFM decks took up more than 50% of the format.
Stoneforge in Blue control, Stoneforge in Faeries, Stoneforge in Junk, in Death & Taxes, in EVERYTHING. If your deck had white, or could fit enough white to appease just a single white mana symbol, Stoneforge either automatically made the cut or was the first thing suggested.
Modern is better without her and her oppressive goodness.
Tarmogoyf in Bant, Tarmogoyf in Zoo, Tarmogoyf in Junk, in Jund, in EVERYTHING. If your deck had green, or could fit enough green to appease just a single green mana symbol, Tarmogoyf either automatically made the cut or was the first thing suggested.
I keep trying to brew a new list for my WB deck, but I just can't. Stoneforge Mystic and Bitterblossom are what allow the deck to compete against aggro. Modern is most definitely not better off without these cards, because you just can't play a deck without powerful turn 2 plays in this format and now only aggro is capable of doing that.

Yeah, but, if you get rid of 'Goyf it's gone. You have one turn to get rid of Stoneforge or you have a 4/4 uncounterable lifelink for two coming down, or some sword that makes whatever it's attached to unblockable against your entire deck.
You've got all the time in the world to get rid of Tarmogoyf, and you can block it.

There are good cards in every color - Tarmo in green, Confidant in black, etc etc. Please give up the incessant, melodramatic hate of SFM. I've got a playset that I never actually had a chance to play with, I was really hoping to sleeve them up in a modern D+T list. Virtually every other deck I'd be interested in requires a huge investment into the manabase. At least SFM was relatively cheap compared to other good staples :/
As many of you have seen my ranting already, I will spare most of it. I must say though, this format just changed completely with these bannings, and honestly I don't know if it changed for the better. Almost all of these bannings are questionable, but some of the questionable ones are fine. The problem comes in some of the silliest bannings. I really don't want to play a format where every time a combo becomes the top deck a piece of it gets the ban hammer. I also would rather not play a format where the only option is turning creatures sideways or ramping into Emrakul.

Pridemage? Putrefy? Heck, removal in response to the equip? There are plenty of viable maindeck answers, and you can always out-tempo them.
Also, "All the time in the world?" If you don't have blockers, you're probably dead much quicker than you would be against the SFM.
You guys do realize that when Legacy was born, it had a massive ban list too, right?
Count me in the minority for this, but I'm kinda glad that they started with a large ban list to play it safe. First impressions are important. The last thing I want to see is a sour experience from the playerbase after playing Modern for the first time.
You're missing the point, feathers (what a shock). You can kill Tarmogoyf, but the whole point of aggro is that one dude isn't a big deal. You can't reasonably trade one-for-one with their whole army, and they can easily have you dead by the time you can cast Wrath of God. You need an early game in this format to compete, and banning Bitterblossom and Stoneforge Mystic robs most non-aggro decks of their early game without slowing down the format a bit.

Stoneforge and Jace go into every deck because they always get value, they're both easy fits for decks that can play them.
But Goyf is okay? Cryptic Command? Watch people get wrecked by Knight of the Reliquary.
All of the decks you build exclude Stoneforge because you just hate the card, too bad that Modern's ban list destroyed every good deck there was. Now you can't fight for you pet cards saying Stoneforge is too good, but Dread Return, Hypergenesis, and Glimpse of Nature aren't more explosive, and more 'unfun'.
Frankly Modern is on the road to Zoo vs Zoo followed by a drop of interest much like Extended.
tl;dr: You seriously think that any good deck should be banned? Eternal formats would never become Zoo vs Zoo unless you banned every other deck.

Mental Misstep arguably speeds it up. Zoo and 12post, Dragonstorm too maybe if we're lucky. I was looking forward to Combo/Aggro/Control/Midrange in one format.
Compared to a full fetch/shock landbase, multiple confidants/goyfs, etc., it's still a bargain.

I won't argue over whether or not 'Goyf should be banned, because I don't know if it should or not. Your point is clear and I respect it but I've yet to really have a problem with it.
But Stoneforge Mystic warped the crap out of the format. There was a horribly high percentage of decks that included her, because she enabled such a huge advantage with very little space and mana investment.
Stopped reading here. If you're going to put me down, I'm not going to give you the time of day.
But, for the record, don't assume I agree with the entire banned list, people. I don't want Visions, Blossom, Dread Return, or Misstep banned any more than anyone else.
That doesn't make the card format-warping, it just makes it good. A variety of different decks played Stoneforge Mystic, using it in different ways.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind the ban on SFM so much if they hadn't banned ****ing Bitterblossom too. Part of this is pet deck syndrome, yes, but I honestly can't see how you build a control deck that can compete with Zoo in this format now that there's nothing you can reasonably play that costs less than three.
Yeah, but as opposed to all of that, you can just get rid of the 'Goyf.

Feathers, explain how SFM warps the format. I've seen VERY few decks even run it.
they seriously thought the prismatic omen decks were going to dominate. they only dominate because they were supported by bant decks really... and even then - wargate in extended didnt do THAT great.... so whats the big deal???
mental misstep? whats the deal there? its fine in any other format but modern? why is modern so special.
bitterblossom can be easily taken care of.
wow. i seriously dont want to play modern at the moment - they just destroyed anything worth playing.
edit: if youve seen very few decks run it you havent played enough modern lol, a ton of decks run it
Okay, give me a minute. I know I'm not the most eloquent or intelligent person ever, but I'll try my best to explain how I think she deserved the banning.
In the meantime, you guys need to take a ****ing chill pill. I'm going to do so as well, because I don't want to get myself banned by slinging pejoratives.

A ton of decks run Forest. It's a staple, not a warper.
But they just ruined a format that reminded me why I enjoy MTG at all.

I got on and modern isn't where it should be. I figured hey we got a real forum. I got on and saw a new banned list I was like cool why not. I saw hypergen and wasn't suprised...then I saw valkut, mental misstep, ancestral vision? WTH. The meta go is going to be nothing but zoo, jund, and 12 post. I figured banning would make the format cool. How about we ban wild nactl and goyf.
IMO goyf>nactl>(thousands of other cards)>ancestral vision>valakut>mental misstep.

SFM I agree could stay on the banned list.

My exact words on his Twitter. They don't even justify it!
