Why not just ban Fetchlands while they are at it? Steppe Lynx and Wild Nacatl are broken with fetchlands.
They could have at least unbanned GGT if they wanted to hit Dread Return.

At least the format will be a breath of fresh air. Limitation breeds imagination. And they pretty much said they could definitely go back and unban later.
Sorry dude! turn 5-6 kills are broken. For the record, the bannings were;
Island
Hypergen
Elves
Fun
EDIT: I don't think Island would be enough to kill control- which says a lot about how hard this ban-list ****ed up.
While I dont agree with you on the speed of my Dredge deck,
I also dont agree with fun disappearing. I mean, there are still other combo decks that can be built. Living End is one of them.

So life from the loam + crucible deck seems good now? Maybe a Junk style deck with knight of the reliquary, thoughtseize, and such seems really good now.
EDIT: Also i completely agree that JtMS, Glimpse, GGT, Visions, Bitterblosom and valakut should of all not been banned. As they are powerful but by no means would warp the format if they were all legal.

elves was fine. But to nerf decks that could compete with jund, post, and zoo and not touch them???? Also I don't think there is a blue spell that I want to run in this format. Hell I might go back to 1.x. I can at least play an island there.

I agree.
I think right now Wizards is just feeling things out. They got a few things right, and a few things wrong. They will continue to ban and unban (rightfully and wrongfully) until the format is just right.
zoo will crush things. Merfolk should probably be a major player too. UWR control will probably be good. Maybe UR swans? I like it. I want a format with new decks. they would have had to ban a lot of cards to make zoo not viable though (or just left mental misstep unbanned but that screws with all aggro which wizards doesn't want to do) Jund should be playable.
This is ****ing stupid. Now modern is almost like standard with shocklands
They banned key cards
Actually there are no cards really worth to be in a ban list. Affinity can be handled and so on.
Mental Misstep, seriously?
even worse because aggro has goyf and nactl, and dark confidant, and KotR.............................................

No, it wasn't because she was good in Standard. I don't play Standard.
While I'll certainly wait for an answer, I'd reiterate what others have said: she's a mid-range/control answer to aggro, but she also provides a threat against slower decks.
As has been mentioned, you need to curve out early, or you stand no chance against some of the quicker decks in the format. SFM provides a T2 body which can fetch potential lifegain (SLS/SWP/BSkull), or evasion through protection. She's answerable, like anything else - yes, she provides CA, but she's relatively worthless without the equipment. A vanilla 1/2 for 1W isn't winning any contests.
Again, you don't need to run narrow cards to answer her - there're plenty of maindeckable spells which can splash hate on artifacts.
Without cards like SFM, what do you respond to the T1 Fetch, Wild Nactl, T2 Goyf with? Wall of Omens? :|

Indeed sir. At least Wizards did their research first. The reasons given for the bans made pretty good sense, and the only thing that left me scratching my head was Ancestral being banned when I thought of that as a major component of Dragonstorm instead of banning something like Lotus instead. I am indeed looking forward to the future of the format and think Wizards did a good job with the list.
I love Stoneforge Mystic, but at the same time the card is broken and deserved to go. It is a ridiculously powerful enabler that helps both the top decks and rogues/brews, but the biggest problem with SFM is that it has two of the most powerful abilities in the game on the same card: tutoring and cheating cards into play. When Aaron Forsythe compares this card to TINKER, you know it's way too good.
Some of the other choices on the ban list might be questionable, but SFM is a card that shouldn't be surprising when you step back and think about it. When a card breaks fundamentals of Magic that are used to keep the game balanced, it's easy to connect the dots after that.

I'd still place SFM in the "should be legal" category, but of all the stupid bans, I'd say it was the least stupid.

I definitely see your point, but Stoneforge needed to go. But she was just oppressively good. Even if she doesn't survive long enough to get her equipment down, you have the equipment regardless. She lets you run just one copy of each equipment and still let you have exactly what you need right when you need it. In addition to requiring very little room she also requires very little color investment; just one one mana. Just a single Hallowed Fountain. Now, you wouldn't do that, because why not add more for Path to Exile or something like that, but regardless she was very easy to squeeze into anything. And that's why so many decks used her, and indeed why they needed her for Zoo.
But I'm not a Zoo player. I don't do aggro. I'm a Midrange player at heart. I do think the real problem isn't banning Stoneforge, but banning Stoneforge, Bitterblossom, and Ancestral Visions at the same time. If Control gets the latter two back, it'll be fine. Hell, if it only gets Misstep back it'll be fine. Because all you need is Misstep and Spell Snare to cover the lion's share of Zoo's deck.
