Why play teachings over gifts ungiven? Gifts is the stronger card, is faster and doesn't limit you to instants. Although I love teachings, I think the first question you should answer is why is it better than gifts and how can I make it better than gifts? Or does teachings have a place in a gifts list or the other way around. Maybe a hybrid build like:
This is not tested at all, just based on the old extended gifts rock lists. It just seems that finding one card for 4 mana (albeit with flashback) while limiting yourself to 1 card type is not as good as a gifts package. You have so many good setups with gifts while mystical teachings can help you find removal, counterspells, gifts, or clique as necessary.
I also have been thinking about the possiblity of running a Gifts or two in in the build. Against aggro, Gifting for Wrath of God, Day of Judgement, Damnation, and Teaching is too good.
Against control you could make a pile of teachings, Esper Charm, Cryptic, and Jace, or something broken like that. Seems good

the problem with gifts is it is a different deck. Look at your deck list and look at mine. teachings is a draw/go deck for the most part. Gifts ungiven needs eternal witness, life from the loam, or academy ruins or a tron/post package to work right. You list is actually gifts rock, may I use it in the primer for gifts rock? Tinker with it a bit more and get it to where you like it and I'll start working on a gifts rock primer.

You can tweak/use the list for a gifts rock primer, no problem.
The question still needs to be answered though, what the benefit of teachings over gifts as they fulfill the same niche.

Gifts and Teachings are similar, but typically Teachings is Ubx while Gifts is typically RUG. Teachings relies on getting Teferi and locking down each of the opponent's plays, while Gifts uses a combination of cards to recur what is chosen to be put into the graveyard. Gifts uses a lot more sorceries and main phase spells, while Teachings wants to basically Time Walk by using the opponent's turn as its own. I guess the best analogy would be to compare them to Elves and Goblins. They are similar in how they play, but they are at heart different creatures.

Instant vs sorcery speed control. I've seen the decks "mesh" before, but that turned out kind of ugly.

engineered explosives good here? it woulda helped ninja in our match. well wrath would have too, but...
anyways, i hope he posts the list.
Screw it, took me 2 seconds to copy and paste xD. I believe EE is good here in the SB. The deck has a lot of unique tricks that I didn't know about, like Esper Charm during the combat step on the second game would of let me have some card advantage. Food for thought for the next time I run the deck. I also got INCREDIBLY lucky I drew Pulse in almost every game. Sad I didnt see teachings though
My list only runs 1 Wrath effect - a singleton Consume the Meek which I never used, but could have.
All I really need is a way to beat Faeries, that deck matches up pretty well against us. Night of Soul's betrayal is an option, but it's clunky, is too slow against Merfolk, Goblins and Elves, and doesn't stop them from killing me with a Mistbind, or Mutavault with a sword.

Go For the Throat is better than smother unless the artifact lands get unbanned. Faeries is about 50/50. Throwing some thoughtseize/inquisition of koziliek in your board will help quite a bit.
Mutavault is a pain, but you just have to sandbag removal for them. Other than that you just got to learn how to play this deck against Faeries.

I agree about the Go For The Throats, but I'm too lazy to buy them. lol; though testing on modo last night, I did play against tempered steel and would have lost if the smothers were go for the throats, so that's some food for thought.

IMO tempered steel without artifact lands is a joke and will die off fast. They essentially lose to a sweeper or any hate. If it got big I could see adding some academy ruins and sideboarding some Engineered explosives though.

I added a V-clique to my board to break the control mirror.
Is there any decent way to answer a batterskull? I find it annoying.
counterspell it, Bounce and counter. disenchant if you really hate it. as long as you don't let them vial it in with SFM it shouldn't be too big of a problem. venny(aka v. clique) is only good against creature light control decks. Against faeries its dead. Also all of our creatures will eventually have flash, other non-faerie control decks have to tap out to play a win condition. Control should be a decent match up and might even be favorable if you know how to win the control mirrors. It is a completely different game when your playing a control mirror. Google who's the beatdown by mike flores if you haven't read it yet it is a great article. Oh and this deck will never be the beatdown lol.

Yeah, I have a decent background in vintage playing drain decks, so I know how to play the control mirror better than anything else really. I like V-clique in the mirror as well as UW stoneforge control type decks, I've just been nut-drawn too many times by turn 2 stoneforge (because they always ****ing have it) that I'm probably just going on tilt. Spell Snare has been one hell of a dissapointment. I usually end the game with 2 in my hand and wish they were anything else, really. Though I haven't been playing against much zoo, so I'll keep them in there, because snaring goyfs and pridemages gets me hard.
Ancestral Vision isn't as good as I'd hoped it would be, but it's still fine. Esper charm is the stoneblade. I'm in love with getting people to discard their hand on their draw step, and it's also nice to blow up prismatic omens and bitterblossoms.

esper charm is a beast. Ancestral vision is kinda meh but the second best option, and is decent in addition to the 4 esper charms. i'm only running 3 snares because of it being conditional. check out my sideboard, and under my teachings deck I have a card explanation + a sideboard plan for several match ups.

So I've been playtesting and fiddling around a bit with my UB teachings, and I've found that the Mulldrifter/Shriekmaw + Grim Harvest trick, while cute, is just too slow.
Added 3 Spell Snare because I was needing a bit more early game counters, and I'm absolutely thrilled with how well they work. Every Teachings build should run 3 of them, no questions asked. I hated them when I was running four copies, they were always filling up my hand and not countering what I needed them to, but as a 3 of, it was always there right when I needed it.
Ancestral Vision has not disappointed me. In fact, I've been pleasantly surprised with how nicely it works, it always seems to go off exactly when I need it to, and I can save my mana for other, better things. I can see why Esper Charm is better, but the fact is AV is more than good enough, I don't feel the need to splash a color to fix what isn't broken, speaking of which...
The mana base is perfect. Don't **** with it. (Obviously this doesn't apply if you're splashing another color)
That's the main deck I've settled on. I'm still working on a sideboard. It's hard when the metagame is essentially unknown, but I'll post again when I've figured it out.

I think for this deck 3 is the sweet spot. I mostly hated having too in hand against decks with an even mana curve.

AV is either really great or really meh. it also gets worse the later you draw it or the faster the deck across the table. Esper charm serves mutiple purposes. Its a card draw spell, its a discard spell, it deals with the 2-3 annoying enchantments in the format. all at instant speed. i don't think it should be the only reason you splash though. I wanted access to path and a few other cards in my sideboard.

Sideboarding is difficult without white. half of my sideboard is white because this cards are no-brainers lol. I am also looking into timely reinforcements. it is a sor. but it could be damn good nevertheless. I'll update the OP with your new list.

Thanks for the input, Slipknot. I have a feeling once a real metagame starts developing and the decks in the tier 1 decks start becoming more defined I'm going to be forced to splash white to stay competitive. In the mean time though, I'm going to be stubborn. It's my nature.
