There any number of different evolutionary directions where Waste Not can go. Would it be O.K. if we take it out of the wrapper, and play with it for a little while? If and when it falls apart, we collectively promise that you can say, "I told you so".
i've been running 3 copies and never felt like i needed the extra one.
more often than not, he'll rack up around 6 damage over the course of a game, as your opponents are generally forced to use their removal on your more immediately aggressive or annoying creatures (i run a full playset of vampire nighthawk which like to attract removal).
the birds of paradise style ability has helped me on more than a few occasions to out-play mana leak or spell pierce, which can be a big game. it also helps you throw out your 3 or 4 cost spells earlier and potentially dodge counters.
he's not a win-condition, so much as a really solid attrition/utility piece that you can run out early and gets more dangerous as the game wears on.
the lifegain situationally matters and can be the key to racing critters such as delver over a series of turns. mitigating damage can be the difference between winning and losing in close-fought games (and plenty of games are close when playing jund).
i'd say 3 of these guys in your 60 can't hurt your gameplan much, and add a really nice amount of versatility and action for such a cheaply costed dude.
the only thing that sucks is he's not the best cascade target in the world. that's why i run 3 and not 4.

It seems like they played it at the PT just for the mirror. Remove the finks/messengers and grind out a game with a stalled board state.
