Hey there am back into the game after a 2 year break. I was a legacy player back then, and the local community turned into modern so here I am.
Last week I played this list of a very agressive version of UR Delver, very close to burn. I am probably going to run white for Lightning Helix and Boros Charm, as well as Path to Exile on the SB. Here is my list;
I have some trouble with Kitchen Finks and decks heavy with spot removal (4Lightning Helix+ 4Path to Exile is already a lot) which is the main reason why I'll go white. I don't feel like Path alone is enough to play around finks, any ideas there? Also, Boros Charm seems fair against burn, but extra ideas could help a lot. Dispel maybe? I know I'm low on creatures and its on purpose, turning the deck around more and more burn is extremely effecient against half the meta. Mid-range is hard, but with Delay/Remand, comboes are easily fought. I could play more creatures in the board to help against spot, but Steppe Lynx doesn't feel right for the spot (if I side them in its because I'm facing removal or burn, both of which destroy him). Any other options around? 1cc is really prefered, but a solid 2cc might do the job in the board.
Thanks for thoughts!
I would play Steppe Lynx over Goblin Guide wihtout even thinking twice. Leaving him outr from an aggressive deck is not a very reasonable decission, especialy if you are running 8 fetches. With him, you can easily deal 4 damage on turn two, and this will ensure most slower (control based decks) will take more damage that would normaly be reasonable to. He's also more consistent than Delver of Secrets in the sense that he will always deal damage. Delver will not always flip on turn two.
i would run 4 Steppe Lynxfor sure, and two Boros Charm, replacing 4x delay and 2x Skullcrack. you don't have that many lifegain effects in Modern, so it's safe to delegate it to the sideboard.
just a quick opinion, though
Goblin Guide hit for 4 by turn 2 as well, and Delver flips all the time with 35 instants. I will probably test out the Lynx as I love him (played him in legacy Zoo and Landfall boros modern) but it doesn't seem as good in a low creature count deck. And going to 31 instants without much manipulation can hurt Delver itself.
I keep Delay, its the main reason to play blue. Such an awesome tempo card, really underrated. If I wanted Delay out and Lynx in, I'd rather play landfall boros :S
Feels like azorious charm would be pretty good in this deck. Super tempo play if you bounce a guy after flipping delver. Or, just cycle it. Seems like the kind of card a tempo deck would really want.
Woah. I didn't know Delay existed. I love it in this deck.
Is Lava Spike too narrow to play in here? Unless the mana is good enough, I'd prefer it over Shard Volley. I feel like there are enough things that could deal with creatures especially with 4 Searing Blaze.
Regarding charms, all three charms in these colors are fantastic, but Boros Charm is the only one I feel is fitting for this deck. The indestructible is amazing when you want to rely on a flipped delver for a few turns and the 4 damage to the face is always an efficient way to use that mana. I agree with your choice, OP.
I think Path to Exile and Skullcrack should be able to manage Kitchen Finks.
So, the white splash (Path & Boros Charm) is the right direction to go to deal with the problems of the deck.
I'm really intrigued by this list, I've played around with similar stuff but never went for the counter/removal package as you have done. Can you comment on matchups, what's feeling good, etc? The bad matchups for pure burn are soul sisters, UWR, and Pod. How does this perform against them?
@BVictor; As much as I love the charms, Azorius Charm dilute the deck damage/card ratio in a sad way. I tried Izzet Charm and don't like it in THIS build. In a slower build (less burn, no delay and WITH snapcaster mage) it does wonder though.
@tyhiggz; boros charm will probably go up to 4, its amazing counter removal, OR extra big burn. It does as much as Staggershock without the creature damage, or more than Remand/Delay against Lightning Helix, which are overplayed in my meta. Probably going up to 4, I just need to aquire my Sacred Foundry :S
@tfu; the match up are pretty much the same as other burn list. Its pretty much invincible against combo. Against aggro, Delver win, GG isn't as good definitelly the hardest MUs, especially against Finks or Boros. Against control its very strong, but there is not much control in my meta so I can't talk much about that. It seems in our favor though.
I can't get a decent idea for a sideboard dedicated against aggro though. Any ideas?
This is not the same deck as URW midrange. Clique, Snappy and friends aren't fast enough for this deck, this is basically RDW/remand/delay. Delver Slight if I can name it in old fashion.
The matchups are more pronounced than midrange, and midrange is the hardest matchup. But the matchups against combo (tron, twin, storm, melira, ect) and control (any 25+ lands deck) are extremely easy. The matchup against midrange, be it Jund, Bant, URW or whatever, isn't as good as the slower URW though. I'm really not concerned about token decks, they are too slow to spot it. Timely Reinforcement is their best card in the matchup, so saving a remand/delay so their reinforcement is NOT timely (pun intended) is needed.
Aggro is won by delver or lost by GG, might have to find a GG alternative post board.
