Are you also in it? good luck to you too if you are!
Round 1 was easy (delver). I didn't even submit my sideboard in time (had to let the dog out).
Round 2 was Goryo's, which is a scarey matchup. Game 1 I survived an emrakul only to be beaten down by a GB and an additional emrakul. Game 2 I had enough stuff out so that I could leave some lands in play after he emrakul'd me down to 4. I hit my land drops and he couldn't get a second way to cheat a creature into play for a while. Eventually I drew castigate and saw fury, emrakul, griselbrand. I was at 8 life (from serra swings) and had some spot removal in my hand so I took the emrakul. Eventually he drew TTB and cast it leaving up 2 mana, putting GB into play. I had prison out so he swung, tapped out, and I pathed his GB. seeing that he was at 8 life he didn't activate the GB. I won 2 or 3 turns later. Game 3 he goryo'd a GB into play after I had a 6/6 serra. He swung, I path'd, he activated twice then double simian double bolted my guy. I charmed it back and won a few turns later after he somehow didn't have any more gas.
I'll edit this post after the event with my other matchups.
The rest of the event:
Round 3 I faced amulet combo. Game 1 my opponent didn't draw any win conditions. Game 2 I got blown out by a well timed pyroclasm cast off 2 lands that my opponent got from a primetime that found both through an aven. Game 3 I got 2 very fast serras and my opponent lost quickly. I'm pretty surprised I won this and the goryo's matchup. I guess that it helps that our terrible matchups are inconsistent.
Round 4: my first R&D matchup, junk. Game 1 wasn't very eventful, I got toughtsiezed on a land heavy hand, then drew a lot more lands. Game 2 I lost to a liliana ultimate. This got me thinking about O-ring, and how I don't think it is worth it due to abrupt decay.
Round 5: Gerry Thompson playing Junk. I punted game 2 and lost holding 2 wraths. My board was 2 squawks, 2 1/1 serra, ranger. His board was 2 7/8 tarmogoyfs (one was tapped). I swung with both squawks leaving back the two serra and ranger to block. He maelstrom pulsed my serra. I wasn't thinking of the card because he already showed me goglari charm and night of soul's betrayal so I figured he was already maxed out on sweepers. Gerry likes the deck and might try it out.
Overall I went 3-2 after starting out 3-0 which always feels rough. Both my losses were to a good matchup (after this event my record is 9-4 versus BGx decks) and most of my wins were to 20-30% matchups.
One card that I was thinking about instead of O ring is faith's fetters. Its 4 mana which makes it slow, but abrupt decay and inquisition proof. The main issue with it is that it doesn't stop ascendancy, but no sorcery speed spells do. I'm probably not going to try it, but I figured I would share my thoughts.
Hi. Just popping over from the Sistas thread, looking for advice on the Mono W Proc Gp Top 8 list.
I have been looking at the Ghost quarter aspect of the list, and wondering how often the ghost quarter/wayfarer synergy pops up to disrupt the BGx decks.
I sleeved it up and it feels remarkably relevant in the 5-6 games I got to play with it, and am wondering how common it is. Outside of tron, how relevant is this engine?
In Sistas I find some of the cards Proc uses are dead- Proc being one of them- because they do not have enough board wipes/control for Scooze. This deck uses them better as it has less to fear from boards- which brings me to question two- how many wraths to run?
Finally I have some experience of proc (my first modern PTQ was with proc at the start of the format. I often used kami for recursive fogs- how many people run one here?

Hi,
Wanted to build this deck for my brother for Christmas. I wanted to start from the top 8 GP Madrid list, and can afford everything but the mb Linvala, let alone the sb one. Are there any substitutes than can work well in the deck? Luckily there is not much twin in our meta, but I play Linvala in pod and know that she also stops other problematic creatures.
I've never played the mono white version so take everything I'm saying as such. The reason you play mono white is so that you have room for a full set of wraths main deck (at least that's the only reason I can think of to omit orzhov charm). The ghost quarters really only come up versus tron which is why I cut down to 1.
Lately I've been wanting more wraths, so I was thinking of ways to fit more in the orzhov version. I came up with the following idea:
I wanted to keep all my numbers the same, and the best solution I could come up with was to cut 1 proc, and add 1 more emeria. This keeps the same number of recursion cards, but frees up a spell slot for the 3rd main deck wrath. This also alleviates the problem that happened once in a while where you get proc flooded. In order to facilitate this change I cut the red source and 5th fetch and added one more basic plains and the emeria. Now that there is no red source I cut the hide//seeks from the sideboard and while I was at it, the BOs since I haven't seen twin nearly as much. I added a 4th path to the sideboard to help in the occasional twin matchup (and other creature based combo). Thinking about my experience in the R&D challenge yesterday (most of our bad machups are combo decks, many of which are inconsistent) I went up to 4 castigates. I then added in 1 disenchant and 1 o ring just to try it out (even though I think it will probably end up being bad and get cut for a 2nd disenchant). With 1 slot left I wasn't really sure what I wanted to try. I ended up looking at my collection and saw necrotic sliver. Because emeria doesn't care what the CMC of what you are resurrecting is, and this list features more emeria, I added it as an additional way to kill all sorts of permanents, and give the deck an additional frustrating late game lock.
I ran it through a daily and ended up going 3-1 beating zoo, scapeshift, and pod, losing to amulet combo hive minding me to death. If you want to play orzhov charm, and more wraths, this list seems like a reasonable starting place. In my match versus pod this version felt much better than my other one simply due to having wrath in both my opening hands.
EDIT: saw that someone posted while I was typing this, so I shall respond to that here:
a Kami of false hope is also reasonable versus twin (and aggro decks too) and a 3rd aven in the sideboard could help with pod.
It slows down splintertwin type combos to 2-3 turns as opposed to one turn. The extort is also nice against burn because you can sneak the lifegain underneath skullcrack. If they crack an extort trigger, you are free to sac a martyr in response (meaning they will never do this). Twin is on the decline, so I wouldn't worry about them unless your local metagame has twin in it. Against twin though, they help a lot. If you only have ghostly prison out your opponent can bounce it end of turn with cryptic and then go off during their turn. If you have BO out you can replay the prison before they go off because they can't go off during their turn. BO has a CMC of 2 and GP has a CMC of 3 meanig your "shields" are safe from EE and echoing truth.
It's also very good against Through the Breach / Goryo Reanimator decks. I looked at a lot of decklists of that type, and there is no way to kill an enchantment like that. The only thing they could use in some decks, is Engineered Explosives. The ways they put a creature into play is through a one-shot attack, and even with Fury of the Horde, it says to untap all creatures that ATTACKED that turn and give them another attack phase. So if they come into play tapped all they could do is activate Griselbrand's ability. They can't attack with any guy they put into play. And the only ways to put them into play is by trying to hardcast them or to cheat them into play. By the time they can hard cast a Griselbrand, or Emrakul, we should have won by then. With this, and the good tech against Twin, I left it in the board. I don't play in super competitive circles, so I'm not as worried about Metagame SB options as much as some. So I know twin decks have dropped as of late, and Reanimator isn't super popular in competitive tournaments, but it's hard for me to beat, so I still board for them.
TTB & goryo's are instants, they can just do it during your end end step. I still had them in that match I described above purely due to lack of other good things for the match-up in that sideboard. Also it is nice not having to worry about "am I allowed to untap?"
Hey guys, I'm rewriting the primer. I'm almost done, but if there's anything that you guys want in there specifically just let me know! Right now the biggest holdup is that I want to include links to videos of matches in the primer, but I've had some IRL emergencies come up stifling my ability to record. I'm probably going to end up just talking over replays of events.
Also I finally bought wraths to replace my DoJs after seeing people start playing Golgari charms.
I just used a hand generator 25 times to show possible hands and if I would mulligan or keep them. If you could post some hands that you specifically weren't sure about I can add them too.
Will you be writing about mono white versions in the primer? If you do it would be much appreciated.
I am specifically interested in sideboards in the combo (twin/scapeshift esp)+ pod matches and tron matches to a lesser extent.
Any breakdown of unusual matches would be great.

I'm writing about both versions. The primary difference between the two decks is orzhov charm vs room for more stuff due to the lack of orzhov charms (such as random lands like cavern of souls, more wraths main deck, more oblivion rings, etc)). All my strategy information applies to both versions unless I specifically mention charm. I'll be including card options for both versions. The main issue is that all my matchup %s are based on the orzhov list. Unless a mono white pilot has a spreadsheet like mine, mono white players are basically going to have to assume that they are roughly similar (which they most likely are).
I wasn't planning on having a sideboarding guide because players should make a sideboard that make sense for whatever metagame they experience. I'll add one in anyway for the two lists that I have in the primer right now, which are the mono white top8 and one of my orzhov lists. That way players can take that information, and use it to figure out cuts and what not for each match-up even if they have different metagames and different sideboards.
Thanks for taking the time to share your expertise on this deck! I'm really looking forward to checking out the rewritten primer. I'd like to see play tips and common lines of play. Such as Mulligans, spell sequencing, and metagame strategies such as your earlier tip where you say to never crack a Martyr when a Burn deck has Skullcrack mana up. Good information!
Where will I be able to find this primer? Will it be a new thread?
That is super awesome! I'm glad the deck performed for you! I'm sure even if your opponent in the finals didn't scoop you would have had that anyway. UR delver is practically a bye.
@leve89- I actually just typed this up in the FAQ section of the Primer I'm writing, so here it is:
Do you want a more powerful deck or more flex slots? Orzhov is more powerful, mono white is more customizable. The white deck simply has more room for cards such as cavern of souls, O-Ring, and sweepers due to the 4 spell slots that get freed up and the 8 land slots. Basically what I’m saying is that the Orzhov version is better, but you can tweak the mono white one for specific matchups more easily.
I still need to addthe game play videos, which should help with the common lines of play and how to play out each matchup specifically. I also need to finish the sideboarding section, however the whole thing was 21 pages single spaced in a word document, so I just figured I needed to post it at some point. I could sit here and add more/edit it forever. I'm going to visit my girlfriend for new years, and when I get back I'll take people's feedback, and incorporate it into the primer. I'll also add more matchups to each section with matchups in it and finish the unfinished sections.
Specifically I am looking for hands you had trouble thinking about keeping, or Mulliganing. I think that would add a lot to the primer.
