I'd also sub in Night's Whisper for Sign In Blood, even if you're only playing 3 Nykthos. Also, why not the full playset? A single-colored deck, even with Obliterator, can very likely support the playset. Also, with Obliterator in your deck, Urborg does indeed seem to be a good idea.
If you're playing Nykthos, it also feels like you probably want a couple of dudes that go over the top - Sam Black brewed up a Mono-Blue version for Modern recently that had Tidebinder, Kira, Grand Architect and Master of Waves, but he also had 2-3 Wurmcoils to go over the top and use the extra mana. To me, I'd try and be greedy and have a few of these as well, perhaps cutting some spells, as you want a board presence if you intend to abuse Nykthos. Griselbrand or Wurmcoil Engine feel the best to me.
I also second the Deathrite Shamans and Lilianas. If you add DRS, I'd also probably cut a Swamp for a single Overgrown Tomb.
Regarding your SB and matchup analysis.... since this is already a devotion deck. you need to add Erebos to your SB against tron, plus spellskite is also a staple SB for all modern decks IMO. plus a nice sac outlet like thoughtpicker witch... can really piss off your opponent.
this is a nice idea.

Looks like a good start, but this really needs an answer to the more unfair decks in the meta. As it stands, this is just a dog to Burn, Affinity, Tron, Twin, and the birthing pod decks can probably just combo you out before you can kill them. While you're tapping out to play messengers and underworld connections, your opponent will too often just be killing you.
In other words, the lists in the OP need more cards that interact with the opponent since this isn't particularly fast.

One would think that this would play a nice game with Smallpox. WIth your dudes liking to die, wouldn't messing with them while you're doing it be the best?

In case I didn't tell you, I don't care about your opinion I just want your facts. And not the facts that make you seem smart. I want the ones that are actual facts.
The update list looks pretty close to what I am running. I forgot about Nantuko Shade, he seems good here. I am running Phyrexian Arena over Bob because some of my spells are just to painful to reveal.
I like where this is going but I still feel these discussion should be taking place in the mono black control thread.
The aforementioned "licorice" thread and this one should probably be merged, although whoever came up with the name "black licorice" instead of modern mono-black devotion should probably get a swift kick to...I mean, this thread probably wouldn't exist if the "licorice" one had a clear title, right?

I am usually faster than pod, and have yet to lose to it in a tournament. I think the sideboard needs a bit more tweaking to beat combo and aggro, those places are where I am finding that I am the weakest. I am planning to up the abrupt decay and thoughtseize count soon, because tonight I was wrecked by splinter twin and a grull deck that literally drew the nut hand two games in a row. I died on turn 3 twice to multiple mutagenic growths and burning tree's.
Outside of this one bad night, my results have still been very strong. I added another stillmoon main to help combat aggro and Olivia's, and it also gets around Celestial Purge, which I am seeing more and more lately.
I will update the first post with my current list tomorrow when I get to a computer, its way to hard to do it from my phone.

most of the pod variants i play these days establish their position before Turn 4, and they either combo off anywhere between turn 3-5 or they have a good board presence. I how is this deck faster than a pod variant though?
It doesen't do us any good to discuss god hands, but on the average hand there are usually three options for us;
Aggro out and try to kill as fast as we can,
Drop an arena as fast as possible to develop more options and more answers, or
Drop and early Liliana and start disrupting them as much as possible.
All of these options can end very well for us by dropping a Gray Merchant.
It does depend on the version of pod that they are running, because combo pod (Or combo anything) are much worse for us, but against the pure value lists post board we can almost turn into a tempo deck with things like Gatekeeper to keep up pressure while causing them to lose presence. Leyline is also good to hurt them, but you really need multiples because I'm sure a Pridemage will be the first thing they do. In that instance though, they are devoting turns to things other than winning, while we are hopefully still applying damage.

Many of the lists on the last half dozen pages look the lists here. Is this different in any way? If not, I'm going to merge the threads.
So using Grey Merchant of Asphodel. So its a different take on MBC than the regular version and plays significantly different.
Mono Black Control wouldn't consider Geralf's Messenger but I do because of the BBB cost.
