Hey guys, I'm pretty new to this deck (I've been playing Jund in modern for quite a while new and I feel like trying something new).
This is a list I've been working on and I want to take it to a GPT on Thursday, I would love some advice about my list:
I wanted to try playing with Dark Confidant since I think he's fantastic in aggro. Also changed my Lingering Souls for Loxodon Smiter since I think he helps more in most match ups and that brings up my creature count to a number that makes me feel like running Domri Rade.
Absolutely no one will question you about that forest.
That list is very similar to what I run
I know you are trying to up your dude count for domri, but I'd still try and stick those paths in the main for killing wurms, restos, goyf, ect... with out having some 2 for 1 happening. Unfortunately, the 12 burn spells you have in there are completely uncuttable. This just might not be a domri deck. It's pretty much the burniest zoo variant there is, and turn three is a little lat to be trying to gain advantage in a deck that kills turn 4.5 average. in playing him you decided to not commit a dude to the board turn 2 or 3 to try and rip a dude a little under half the time for turn 3 or 4. It seems really bad against tron and scapshift.
What is the baloth for? Do you just really want to get that Liliana? Costing 4 against mono red with 2 green might put you in a spot where you have to crack a few more fetches for untapped than you want, watch that and see if its an issue. You can also try rhox war monk or finks there if indeed you want something for burn. I get most of my wins playing the control roll there and snapcastering lightning helixes
You might be over sbing with the thrun, in testing try playing with out it and seeing if it tanks your win%.
LET ME KNOW HOW THE FULMINATOR MAGE WORKS OUT! I've been super curious about that dude recently but he seems too targeted at tron.
Yeah the Domri Rade may be too much, they aren't something I want to play T3 (except against UWR control) so probably they should be 2 Path to Exiles.
I understand that the deck want's to win turn 4 or 5 but I had a lot of games (mostly against G/X midrange like Naya midrange, Kiki Pod, Junk or even BW Tokens) where they win a little life, play some good amount of blockers and I find myself with only 1 or no cards in my hand on turn 6 with 2 or 3 creatures in play and my opponent sitting at like 6 life and those are the times when I said man I really wish I had a Dark Confidant. Obviously Bob is a card that I take out in some matches (R/X, Affinity, Scapeshift some times) but I'll keep trying him for a while.
The Baloths on the sb I'm not that sure about them, I was thinking that they are useful not only against LOTV but also against UWR midrange (witch I think it's a hard match) but I was also thinking of cutting them for a third Kor Firewalker and 1 Slaughter Games.
The Thrun, the Last Troll is there to deal with UWR/Jund but maybe I should cut it for a Grafdigger's Cage or some more SB against Pod.
The Fulminator Mage in my testing worked better than Molten Rain because sometimes you rather have a hitter than LD. I don't think I sb against anything other than Tron but there's a lot of Tron where I play. I mean not so long ago we had a top 8 with 3 RG Trons.
I wanted 1 more Ancient Grudge and maybe 2 Thoughtseize and 1 or 2 Cage in the sb but other than the Baloths and the Thrun I'm liking the rest of the sb.

Apparently RG tron runs rampant in my meta as well but honestly I feel like its very easy to over SB. Also watching people use LD aginst the deck seems counter intuitive to me. It puts all your eggs in one basket except you can't make enough SB space to get multiple effects. Sure I might break tron dudes lands and get a win but if they just play another and you hoarded our anything that could deal then real damage it's fairly bad. Obviously your not drop Geist for Mage but if you play mage your not playing Geist that turn. Why is this bad? Becuase we end the game with 0 grip. I'd rather play thoutseize which can snipe the karn or wurmcoil or Ostone out of Thier hand for 1 mana and it's workable so you can still maximize your damage output and kill turn. In short racing then is the best strategy so take out your damage light cards for path grudge and seize to nab Thier silver bullets and just stomp them. They won't ever get Emmy mana you just need to stop the T3 karn wurm plays. Asuming they are not stupid and drop Thier 1 of in hand tron land last the LD seems not only weak but useless elsewhere. I could be wrong I'm still inexperienced however it seems simple yet subtle. This deck wants both players to see less cards before the game ends. No matter what we get it's fonna add up to a dead opponent and in a MU that doesn't bolt itself to get mana we lose an edge the format naturally gives us as well as blanking our burn as removal this is a sticky spot but just rember they can cast a bomb and still get burned out . Go ahead abd drop your wurmcoil I'll path it swing all and snap back my tribal your dead. That seems better than " I kill your land crosses fingers". Thourseize is espicaly goid since damge is not a factor on our side and sniping a karn out of Thier hand is a game winning play for B.
I really loved having an excuse to rune 4x stony silence in my sb. as of right now I'm keeping it in there. It beats robots, but also hit a lot of stuff in tron: the eggs, the maps, the oblivion stone, sometimes some mana, the relics. It usually bought be enough time to kill them of play their wurm when they cast it. I also sb pithing needle to hit karn, the eldrazi land, or any of those things previously mentioned. I've considered the fulminator in hopes of ramping it out turn 2 but the only thing i'd want it over needle against is tron.
I haven't considered the duress effects before to seriously, but I can see how its good.
one thing I really want to fit into my sb is slaughter games.
So, people soon can't legend out your geist anymore. I'm pretty into this.
You can now also attack with Geist, and replace it with an untapped Geist to block (if the situation calls for it). No longer have to feel as bad drawing multiple Geists.
I practice aginst a guy playing u/b mill before we play I 4-0 him then I get paired with him round 1 and 2-0 him
1-0
Round 2 vs mono black vamps
Game 1 I crush him with guest abd bolt helix tribal snap.
Game 2 I mull to 5 no lands in 7 1 in 6 and it's plains :/
End up 1 damage short of killing him
Game 3 I keep 2 noble 2 voice 3 land top deck 6 lands in a row and lose and voice still almost got Thier until he steaks then with captivating vampire.
1-1
March 3 vs 3-4 color allies
Game 1 I mull to 6 he goes first drops 3 free blades then 2 raptors then the life link ally I lose fairly bad
Game 2 I play dork into Geist into turn 4 kill with double tribal flames he had no turn 1-2 play.
Game 3 I get a good hand get our voice goyf and have snap and burns easy win
2-1
Match 3 vs what looks like junk reanimate from standard but with fetches etc not sure why he didn't just play pod. Swag risk scare me but I win game 1 super fast off Geist
Game 2 he opens birds then sin collectors my tribal games then blinks him
On my draw for a tribal I just drew :/. I still almost get but then he starts the swag tusk and he wins
Game 3 we both get good hands I open with some dorks and some goyfs bolt one of his dorks we trade a ton he plays 2 thread tusks this game and blinks them twice but ive been pinging him with DRS trading goyf blowin into his dudes burning him to the face it looks like I'm done he slimed my blue source had 3 beast tokens 2 angels a thrag tusk a voice he's takin like 30 damage but he's at 11 life I'm on 1 goyf 2 drs 2 hierarch abd holding a might of alara with domain 4 I top deck thundermaw hellkite from my board might it double exalted it taps his Angels 11 DMg :). Yugioh top deck ftw
3-1 3rd place
I faced nothing I expected only lost to
Myself in a MU that's good for me the deck felt great Voice pulled major weight. They said it was less players than normal but 3rd out of 12 is a good first finsh for me Im happy. Almost winning with 2noble 2 voice nothing else was pretty funny
Well I have a report from the GPT I played yestarday.
I went 3-2 and got 9th place (tied in points with 7th and 8th place, it sucks to have an opponent drop from the tournament, if he hadn't I would have placed 7th).
Round 1 VS a friend playing Affinity
Game 1: He wins the die roll, I mull to 5, and plays Citadel, 2x Memmite, Ornitopther , Mox Opal, Thoughcast, Drum. I play noble. He plays Ornitopther, Blinkmoth, Plating and hits me for 8, I go down to 9 and die the next turn.
Game 2: I mull to 6, stall the ground with 2x Loxodon, he plays a Darksteel citadel and 2 Etched Champion (now I can't kill them ever) and eventually I lose bya Champion with plating.
0-1
Round 2 vs Kiki Pod
Game 1: He wins the die roll and I mull to 6. I came out fast with noble T1 and Geist T2, he goes BoP T1, T2 Wall of Roots, T3 Pod + Image at time Geist, T5 he was at 4 (I was tapped out with a tribal in my hand) and he manages to combo out.
Game 2:. I mull to 6, with Aven + Cage he can't combo, I start beating him, a Dark Confidant leaves me a very low life, he manages to blink/copy a Kitchen Finks 5 times, I had him at 6 life and he pods a Zealous Conscripts and kills me.
0-2
Round 3 vs BW Tokens
Game 1: He wins the die roll, I mull to 6, It's a very long game with tons of back and forth, eventually 2 Shamans plus Snapcaster with Flames gives me the game.
Game 2: I mull to 6, he mulls to 5. I go out slowy, he plays 2 anthems and I lose the damage race.
Game 3: I mull to 6, he mull to 5 (again). I go out guns blazing with Shaman, Tarmogoyf + Helix, Flames + Snapcaster and win.
1-2
Round 4 vs UR Storm
Game 1: He wins the die roll (again...) I play T1 shaman, T2 Geist, T3 Flames + Tarmogoyf, he manages to combo win T4 with Pyromancer Ascension.
Game 2:I mull to 6, I go T1 Noble, T2 Loxodon, T3 Tarmo + Helix, T4 win with Snapcaster + flames.
Game3: I go T1 bolt, T2 Confidant, T3 Geist, T4 he fizzles the combo and I win.
2-2
Round 5 vs UWR Midrange
Game 1: I win the die roll (yay), I go T1 Noble (he bolts it), T2 Helix, T3 Tarmogoyf, T4 Helix + Flames, T5 Flames + Snapcaster and win.
Game 2: It's very back and forth until I manage to kill his Celestial Colonnade with a Combust and then burn him for the win.
3-2
I don't remember all the decks in the top 8 but I know there was 1 Affinity, 2 UWR Midrange, 1 Valakut, 1 Junk midrange and 1 Melira Pod.
Well first I was good to play modern again after 6 months where I only judged the events but I realized that I don't know most of the cards that the decks are playing and I misread the metagame, I expected tons of mono red, RG tron and some UWR and Melira, the last 2 were true but there was only 1 mono red and zero RG Tron.
So my sb was bad, I needed more cards again Affinity at least and Kor Firewalker + Fulminator Mage didn't do anything for me.
The card I side out the most was the Dark Confidants, it's sad because it's one of my favorite cards but I wouldn't play more than 2 main (they did help me against combo) if event that, I want to try some 4CMC or 5CMC in my sb and maybe Elspeth in the main and Bob doesn't allow that.
I still think that I rather keep trying Loxodon Smiter instead of Lingering Souls since they were a house all night and they were great even against Affinity (although the flying blockers would have helped me more in that match only).
I still need to get me some Voice of Resurgence (although I don't fancy paying 40US$ for each) and try them. But even now I'm not seeing any game were I really would have liked a 2/2 that leaves tokens.
If I had to play tomorrow I would probably use something like this:

good report i didn't think DC would be very good i like him too :(. i really liked having a basic mountain with 8 red fetches did you ever want one? Voice has ben very good for me but i think its better with linger. Elspeth i tried as a 2 and 1 of and honestly i think shes bad in enough MU that if i kept her now it would be in SB which i have considered. for the affinty matchup i choose to play ancient grudge over stoney silence since its a 2 for 1 for 3 total mana and with burn spells it and pick off that annoying cranial and even increase the count if its taht bad a MU. i have not liked duress as much as thought seize i think after playing id run 3-4 seize no duress
How necessary is hierarch? That's the only card I think I'm missing that's worth over $1, and I don't want to spend the cash on those guys (why aren't they in MM? :()
Well. Depends on the kind your after. I mean, birds can do the same deal, but doesnt attack if needed or add a buff. Youd need mana fixing though. Id say at least deathrite +3 other fixers.
I've wanted to try out a 5c domain deck for a while but given price of some of the cards like Snapcaster Mage, Noble Hierarch and Geist of Saint Traft, I'm wondering if a budget approach would be viable.
Would a more aggro-based list using critters like Kird Ape and Goblin Guide along with Might of Alara work or would it run out of steam too early or suffer from consistency issues?
I'm thinking about cashing out for a Domain Zoo deck, I just have a quick question how good is Geist of Saint Traft ?
Isn't Knight of The Reliquary just outright better? I know Hexproof is solid but it seem like every deck can just produce a blockers - I would love to hear some feedback about the cards performance :).

KotR isn'T all that great in the DRS-heavy meta and with Scavanging Ooze coming in M14 it might get even worse (not that it's bad... just saying).
If you play this deck you're not afraid of blockers at all, you generally run 12 burnspells and 2-4 PtE to get rid of blockers (Bolting a blocker than "burning" 6 with GoST is better than just Bolting for 3 and hitting with a 3/3 KotR simply because GoST will very very likely make another 4 damage afterwards thanks to being hexproof).
Besides Goyf and Sundering Titan/Wurmcoil there really aren'T many blockers that are out of range for burnspells, especially seeing as Tribal Flames will enarly always get Restoration Angel and other 4 toughness guys
tyvm for your quick answer - you've sold me on Mr GoST.
Looking at Boin's list I notice that he is running 4x LD effects, which MU's would you bring them in for? it seems good against Mid-Range (Pod, Jund) and Control is that correct? or is LD bad vs a deck like Pod which has heaps of rampers.

I'd definitely take out pure creature removal (e.g. Path to Exile) for LD stuff against non-Exarch Twin combo and heavy control. PtE especially rots against Scapeshift (all it does is force Sakura-Tribe Elder to not block for the rest of the game, boot Primeval Titan from TitanShift builds, boot Tiago if they hit 8+ lands, and ramp you in response to removal).
I don't understand why the basic land of choice is Mountain and Plains, it really should be Forest and Plains or the deck will just lose to Blood Moon.

I'm personally a fan of an adjusted mana base with Misty Rainforest in it so I can actually fetch basic Forests. With that deck's current mana base, one basic Forest won't noticeably raise the Blood Moon match-up because you can't find it by cracking any fetches.

I went 3-2 and got 9th place (tied in points with 7th and 8th place, it sucks to have an opponent drop from the tournament, if he hadn't I would have placed 7th).

2 Misty Rainforest
1 Marsh Flats
1 Forest

1 Slaughter Games
1 Thrun, the Last Troll
1 Abrupt Decay
1 Combust
1 Snapcaster Mage
1 Path to Exile
4 Arid Mesa
4 Scalding Tarn
2 Misty Rainforest
1 Marsh Flats
1 Forest
1 Plains
1 Breeding Pool
1 Godless Shrine
1 Hallowed Fountain
1 Overgrown Tomb
1 Sacred Foundry
1 Steam Vents
1 Stomping Ground
1 Temple GardeN
4 Deathrite Shaman
4 Geist of Saint Traft
4 Loxodon Smiter
4 Tarmogoyf
3 Noble Hierarch
2 Snapcaster Mage
Spells:18
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Lightning Helix
4 Tribal Falmes
2 Path to Exile
2 Might of Alara
2 Elspeth, Knight Errant
2 Grafdigger's Cage
2 Aven Mindcensor
2 Thundermaw Hellkite
2 Thoughtseize
2 Stony Silence
1 Slaughter Games
1 Combust
1 Snapcaster Mage
1 Path to Exile
1 Duress
good report i didn't think DC would be very good i like him too :(. i really liked having a basic mountain with 8 red fetches did you ever want one? Voice has ben very good for me but i think its better with linger. Elspeth i tried as a 2 and 1 of and honestly i think shes bad in enough MU that if i kept her now it would be in SB which i have considered. for the affinty matchup i choose to play ancient grudge over stoney silence since its a 2 for 1 for 3 total mana and with burn spells it and pick off that annoying cranial and even increase the count if its taht bad a MU. i have not liked duress as much as thought seize i think after playing id run 3-4 seize no duress

Would a more aggro-based list using critters like Kird Ape and Goblin Guide along with Might of Alara work or would it run out of steam too early or suffer from consistency issues?
Isn't Knight of The Reliquary just outright better? I know Hexproof is solid but it seem like every deck can just produce a blockers - I would love to hear some feedback about the cards performance :).

tyvm for your quick answer - you've sold me on Mr GoST.

I'm not fond of LD against Pod, as they are the (low-curve) control, and if they stick enough Kitchen Finks, Voice of Resurgences, Deathrite Shamans, dude-killing Murderous Redcaps, and soon-to come Scavenging Oozes, you are doomed, anyway.
