I have done a small amount of play testing with options 1 + 2 so far. 3Ang/2Tas often led to problems of having two Angs in my opening hand, which I hated. I would usually have to wait a long time to power out the 2nd Ang. Even the 1st Ang was a bit annoying because I sometimes had to nuke my whole graveyard to get him out fast, and that left me no targets for K-Command or Snappy for a while.
2 Ang/2 Tasi was a lot safer because I almost never got two in my opening hand, but I often got 0 in my opening hand. If my delver dies, I really want a delve fatty to power out quickly and take over the game, and it sucked not having one.
I haven't tried the 2 Ang / 3 Tasi configuration yet. I know the drawback to this is you can't have 2 Tasis on your side due to the legend rule . . . but honestly, I almost think it's worth the risk because I feel Tasi is so much better than Ang. Not only can you usually power him out a turn faster due to the cheaper cc, but his ability allows you to easily grind out the win is long as you have a counterspell handy to protect him from removal. It's almost like playing a K-Command every turn. Tasi is always the delve fattie I want to see, not Angler.
I'm playing 3 anglers 2 tasigurs but i'm planning on testing 2 anglers 2 tasigurs and 4 casters with a 19 land shell(currently sitting on 3 casters, 18 lands). I feel that configuration can be better in the grindy matchups where I feel this deck is one level above grixis or BGx.
Hi, I've just started playing again since the Innistrad block. I want to play modern and had a Delver deck from that era, as well as a collection of Zendikar and New Phyrexia cards, so thought Grixis Delver would be a good place to start. This Friday it's Modern FNM at my local shop so I'd like to take part.
I have all the creatures now and most of the spells, but I'm missing a number of counterspells, so was wondering if people here could give advice on the best deck I could make with the counterspells I have? I also have no idea what the Modern meta at my local shop is like.
I do not have:
Spell Snare,
Spell Pierce,
Dispel,
Deprive and
Remand.
I've got 4s of
Negate,
Mana Leak,
Flashfreeze,
Vapor Snag,
Dissipate and
Mental Misstep.
I have all the other key spells (KCommand, Thought S, Gix Probe, GffT, Terminate etc.)
What would be a good way to balance those counterspells in the deck? Dissipate looks too slow, but I'm not sure if there is much Mental Misstep can target, and obviously once games start grinding on and there's more mana, Mana Leak loses its appeal.
Does anyone have advice for what to do with the counter cards I have? Thanks if you can. Also, if this is the wrong place to post this let me know and I'll move it! Everyone seems really knowledgeable here so I thought I'd ask.

well deprive and remand aren't necessary for the deck, and neither is spell pierce, but that one is recommended by me personally. Also there is almost always at least 2 spell snare somewhere in the 75, so try to get those asap.
I've got 4s of
Negate,
Mana Leak,
Flashfreeze,
Vapor Snag,
Dissipate and
Mental Misstep.
First off, mental misstep is banned in all formats besides vintage, so you can remove that from your list there. Negate is usually a 1 of in the SB, mana leak is in the MB as a 2-3 of normally. Flash freeze can be in the side as a 1 of. Vapor snag is just a bad card here since we can just kill their creatures with terminate and murderous cut. Dissipate is way too expensive to be considered in the deck.
I personally found Spreading Seas to be an alright card against jund/junk decks, but after a while the card draw/land alteration just lost its value, so after testing it i am removing it. This is where I am planning on moving my SB to:
Changes from the SB:
-2 Spreading Seas
-1 Forked bolt
+1 Ashiok
+2 Thoughtseize
I thought about adding Jace, Architect of Thought over ashiok, but matchups where I want jace over ashiok is the Grixis and UR matchups, but there Thoughtseize gets the job done well. MB I think I am removing the Electrolyze 1 of and adding another forked bolt just to keep the curve as low as possible. The card draw can be nice, but having open mana is nicer.
Thanks for the feedback. Good to know about mental misstep!
I'll see if I can get a hold of a spell snare before Friday. I met some traders at yesterday's FNM so I'll see what they've got. Should get Rise // Fall by the end of the week so can get that in too.
Against storm add 1 rough/tumble and remove an additional Kommand from list above in spell based combo to fight off empty the warrens
Edit: replaced electrolyze from side outs with forked bolt in tron match
What do you think of Languish instead of Engineered Explosives? The extra 1 cc is obviously a factor, but you want to wait a while anyway before you cast it anyway so your opponent (hopefully) overcommits. I recently got crushed by an Abzan deck which had creatures with cc ranging from 0-4, so I want a sweeper that hits all of them except my delve creatures. Also, I can recast it super late game with Snappy if I have to.
Oh, and I haven't tried ashiok yet, but how often does it come up where are you unable to use him because your opponent has too many creatures for you to block so if you were to cast him, they would attack into him and he would die right away?
I've been having problems with fast aggro decks if I don't have a nuts draw of a bunch of removals in my opening hand and first few turns. But any aggro worth its salt will spill their creatures out quickly and I find this deck to be overwhelmed if the removals don't come quickly. Affinity, Merfolk, and Elves seem bad (especially game 1) because of how explosive they are.
What's everyone else's opinion on counterspells in Grixis Delver? I don't find them particularly useful. In the sideboard maybe? They and Young Pyromancer are usually the first to get sided out.
I think the beauty of this deck is how flexible it is. You can switch from control to aggro and vice versa. When the deck works it is super fun to play. The problem is we 1 for 1 in removing their creatures is not a good strategy when going against fast aggro.
What you guys think about Abbot of Keral Keep? It seems the real deal in modern...and in grixis colours with such low curve...could be a great addition...
As it's been said he's legit but you'd need to change the deck game plan completely since he doesn't play well with counter spells. Check out the blue jund thread
I just played GP OKC. I didn't day two, but I went 6-3 (my goal going in was to get at least a 51% game win percentage; and I ended up getting 60%). I only lost to gifts and the mirror. My list is primarily inspired TheAller. Caleb Durward's recent lists were also a big inspiration. My team agonized on the counter magic package for a long time and I can say I'm really happy with where we ended up.
Round 1: Win vs Naya Zoo (2-1)
Just gotta weather the first few turns. Once I stabilized after turn 4 or so and he was in top deck mode it was textbook. Game one I knew he had Loxodon Smiter. So, in my n00b-move-of-the-day during game 2, I kommand and he discards a Smiter. I end up winning, but barely. At one point I had two Vampiric Links out on his fatties. Quite fun.
Round 2: Lose vs W/U Tron Gifts (0-2)
Let me tell you about how hard Iona, Shield of Emeria is to deal with... I never saw my moons after sideboarding. After he landed Iona (naming red), he countered my Rise and I was dead.
Round 3: Lose vs 4 Color Gifts (1-2)
Gifts is really frustrating. There were a lot of wonky lines in this one that I took. I think had I been a better player or realized what I was up against sooner I could have pulled this one out. I ultimately lost to a Baneslayer Angel after I got him down to Lightning Bolt range. At this point I'm 1-2 and feeling really bad about my odds of day two'ing.
Round 4: Win vs Grishoalbrand (2-1)
Game one his deck malfunctioned pretty bad. Game two he went off pretty quick and I didn't have enough countermagic to deal with it. Game 3, after he took a particularly long and durdly turn Faithless Looting and I Fall (Rise // Fall) his two-card hand of Griselbrand and Through the Breach. So dirty.
Round 5: Win vs The Rack (2-1)
It turns out disruption decks have some really interesting interactions with delve creatures! In a particularly scary turn of events, I Gitaxian Probed him to see 2 bolts and 1 kommand. I was at 3. He had no red sources. I attacked with Tasigur and got him down to 1. Then he draws and plays a Bloodstained Mire. I'm an idiot and almost scoop. He does one of those sideways 'you have to be kidding me' looks. I take my turn and win. Only then did I realize the mire would have killed him...
Round 7: Lose Mirror (1-2)
Game 1, turn 1: he plays Delver, says go. I play Delver, say go. It is so ON. This set was far the most fun I had all day. He was a polite, soft-spoken man with all foreign and Zendikar judge foil lands. I could gush about this match all day. I ultimately lost during turn 4 of going to time. It was great. This is what kicked me out of day two’ing, but I wanted to finish strong. I’m really glad I lost. He was a better player and I learned a lot from him. Example: never fear to Thought Scour your opponent after they scry to the top.
Round 9: Win vs. Affinity (2-0)
He conceded the match after G1. He was not about the Kommand + Snapcaster life.
General Notes
Rise // Fall is the real deal. Against The Rack I Rose his Tasigur and returned my Tasigur from the yard, which won me the game. Against combo, Fall can be your haymaker. Versus the two Gifts Ungiven decks, Rise was my only hope against a resolved Iona, Shield of Emeria.
Rough // Tumble should never(?) be in the same 75 as Young Pyromancer. While it is great in theory with the other creatures, I found it quite awkward in practice.
Having a hard counter like Deprive mainboard is great.
Forked Bolt's performance was marginal at best. I found myself siding it out quite often. I may replace it with another Terminate or even a Vapor Snag. I don't like an effect like this at sorcery speed. I fear Electrolyze may be too expensive for a deck like this.
I think going up to 9 fetches is important for delve. I wouldn't change a thing about my mana base. I was able to turn-two delve threats due to the Bloodstained Mire on a couple of occasions.
Last minute I dropped Muderous Cut after my friend observed that 5 delve cards were too many. I am thankful I did, though there were a few situations where I would have really liked to have it (such as vs Iona).
This deck is a blast. I look forward to developing it and seeing how far it can be pushed.
Edit: fix typo in decklist.
Edit: fix another typo in decklist.
Nice tournament report Permanence. I see our lists are pretty similar. By the way looking at Matthew Dickel's list from Santa Clara it looks like more pro-players are going with the "more CMC 1 spells, no Remand" approach. Anyway, a few things:
1). I agree on Forked Bolt, I don't feel it is a maindeck card unless there are specific metagame reasons. When it is not good, it is a pretty bad, clunky card. I like running 2 in the sideboard though;
2). I agree on Rise//Fall not only for the reasons you mentioned, but also because it creates a powerful synergy with Snapcaster and there's a lot of value in this card in grindy MUs. Also, it is a great way to deal with any big creature we might face, against Tron for example. I think running 2 is the right way to go;
3). Isn't Spell Pierce a stricly better maindeck card than Dispel? How have you liked your maindeck Dispel?;
4). I don't think you made the right move by cutting Murderous Cut. We can definitely afford it and there are many reasons to run it (cleaning the graveyard for Tasigur, destroying Eidolon without damages, unlike Terminate it avoids Spell Snare, destroys creatures with protection from red, can be cast for CMC 1 most of the times...);
Thanks!
CMC 1 spells are vital to protecting the creatures and keeping the pressure on early. If I know they have a lot of removal, I'll wait one extra turn before jamming a threat so I can keep protection up. Remand, while helping with Young Pyromancer, would need an extra turn to come online for protection duty. With only 18 lands, the CMC 2 is pretty steep for a problem you're going to have to deal with next turn when they cast the remanded spell again. This is where Mana Leak shines. If I'm spending 2 mana to counter something in with this deck, I need that thing countered.
2.) I'm going to give the 2 maindeck Rise // Fall a shot. I am slightly apprehensive about it because on a couple occasions I needed one half of Rise, but couldn't satisfy the other half's condition (I was desperation attacking with an un-filpped Delver into Iona hoping he would block). That said, I'm firmly in the Team Rise // Fall camp. When you do land it it seems super OP for the mana cost. The snapcaster synergy is amazing.
3.) No. I highly value the stopping power of a Dispel. I also value the diversification of counters. I'm curious about changing the ratios around, though. Seven counter spells in the base 60 feels like the right number. How do you like running 2 Deprive?
4.) You're totally right. Good thing I picked up a foil one this weekend 'cuz it is going back in!
@traderjoe
Don't use sun droplet, it's too slow vs burn, when destroyed by revelry you don't get all the value out of the card, and doesn't help snapcaster Mage at all. Vampiric link is used since it can essentially negate an eidolon of the great revel and allows us to use snap bolt or other snap targets without taking 4 immediately. You want 4 life with droplet? Wait 4 turns. You are going to be dead by that time after you cast droplet.
Evart Moughon made 27th place in GP Oklahoma, here's his list http://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/321403#paper
I personally dislike his list. Its very, "old" for lack of a better word. Its using the same style deck as when it was first created, with 3 tasigur, 3 snap, and 3 young pyro main and using shatter storm in the SB. I feel like if it were updated a little more, he might have done better.

I like my 2x MD Deprive, running only one doesn't make sure you have it when you need it. But then again, I need it more than you since you also have Mana Leak. So your 2x Mana Leak 1x Deprive seems fine.

Yea I mean he doesn't even run the fourth Snap. Matthew Dickel's list from WMCQ Santa Clara is way better.
Yeah, I don't understand the 3 snaps...
His deck is lower to the ground. I can see the appeal of 3 Tasigur's: turn two'ing an Angler requires two fetches and a scour, Tasigur only requires one fetch and a scour. I'll take the added power of the Angler, though. Not only is he a clean 4 turn clock, but he also gobbles Tasigur's for breakfast.
@Permanence it is a trump card that helps win games against BGx decks, affinity, and sometimes Grixis decks as well since he can slow down attackers or draw cards and cannot be killed by abrupt decay. He is a good card, just not played too often in delver decks
Alright, Tier 2 match breakdown and lantern control match breakdowns are updated in the primer. Next I am going to update the sideboard option chapter, so if you see any sideboard cards you like that aren't mentioned there, post them before the end of the day so I can add it to the thread.
I do 2/2. If anything, 3 zombie fish.

1.) 2 Forked Bolt on sideboard sounds good.

I personally dislike his list. Its very, "old" for lack of a better word. Its using the same style deck as when it was first created, with 3 tasigur, 3 snap, and 3 young pyro main and using shatter storm in the SB. I feel like if it were updated a little more, he might have done better.

Have you ever pondered the Logic Knot?
Yeah, I don't understand the 3 snaps...
His deck is lower to the ground. I can see the appeal of 3 Tasigur's: turn two'ing an Angler requires two fetches and a scour, Tasigur only requires one fetch and a scour. I'll take the added power of the Angler, though. Not only is he a clean 4 turn clock, but he also gobbles Tasigur's for breakfast.
What is Jace, Architect of Thought doing in here?
