This will be an experimental thread. It has been requested that modern subs have sort of a free talk thread, so were going to try it out. Note: Id love for this thread to still pertain to modern one way or another, but the rules will be a bit more lax in here.
More or less, feel free to share with the modern community.
As a starting post... I had something awesome happen the other day! Against a deck that was playing vertaent bloom (the 4 cmc card that doubles forest mana?) and it was turn 3. He was at 12 life... and BOOM! I tap my 4th lands, giving me 8 mana to work with. kird ape gets rampager, rampager, and a vines of vastwood. Was like 'Thanks for the mana! take 14."
I've been forcing path into my zoo decks for a long while. That catch all exile effect still beats dismember any day of the week in my opinion. Also I hate Wurmcoil.

There are so many times where I want to just path an early Deathrite shaman, but at the same time it gives them a land it and puts me down one removal spell.

I pretty much only run red for bolt. It's kinda like how legacy merfolk used to run green for 'goyf.
Not sure where else to put this post, so I'm putting it here.
A few days ago I threw together a Modern RW deck. Nothing amazing, just meant for screwing around in the MTGO Just For Fun room. It's a decent deck with some good cards, but certainly wouldn't win a DE.
So I traded my three extra cryptic commands from scapeshift to get my friend one of two dark confidants. Now I'm kinda pushing to finish modern decks thinking "bad resource management?" He handed me an Archangel of Thune I didnt even have a use for, so I traded it to a friend for more stuff for other people I test with, kind of cycling material to put it to good use
(Backstory, I like people who arent dicks in this game and who are all about the mtg grind, so I recruited ppl who I can discuss the game with...long story short he can play pretty much anything but that skill suffers from not knowing the proper levels of how to handle "I want to build my own deck" competitvely)
kinda sitting here trying to figure how Im going to put this resource to good use (I knew he needed confidants and I dont play black...plus I have a person who owes me 2-3 cryptics currently, so God willing it works out, but its a big gamble no?)
If you are reading this...looks like I'll be testing your cryptic-less scapeshift list again real soon Lectrys
Decks I have in my bag of tricks- Needless to say, someone who wants to play will probably have a deck UB/x Faeries UR Storm XURWB Affinity G Elves UW control
there's going to be a modern event at my LGS Saturday, which is a store that is pretty casual. so I mostly have two things I wanna discuss
1-what kind of decks should I be prepared for?I have little knowledge of the modern meta so any help will be nice
2-I am thinking of building rdw, since that's all I have the cards to build atm,how good of a choice is that?
I don't think its a very good choice, purely because another majorly played budget deck runs it over like nobody's business (Soul Sisters) I wouldn't be surprised to see 2 or more players playing a Wx lifegain strategy. That said, If you still want to play burn, mainboard 4 Skullcrack, some amount of Flames of the Blood Hand and sideboard Leylines.

So if someone of you, who knows the modern decks quite well, could help my with this decision I would be happy :).
So long
That is always going to be a judgement call, but the competitive decks that take the most skill and punish poor decisions are probably Pod, Jund, and UWR control. Pretty much anything but straight up aggro or burn requires a decent amount of thinking, but those three are the ones that will take a misplayed burn spell or bad block and lose you the game.
Is it a thread necro to reply to a 6 month old sticky?
Anyways, I want to stay abreast of any large modern tournaments popping up. What is the best forum here on MTG Salvation for people to post announcements of new tournaments?
Im recently getting into modern and ive been playing mono black devotion and its extremely fun. I do however have a dilemma, im maining 4 thoughtseize, 4 inquisition, and 4 go for the throat. Is go for the throat the best option? I have yet to play against affinity, but im sure I will eventually. Would victim of night be better? Dismember? A mix? any advice would be aciated
Come get your Modern on over at The Dark Tournament, where MTGS users go to test their skill, and wit, in monthly single elimination tournaments. Sign ups start now and end Jan 31. Brackets will go up Feb 1 if we have enough people. If we don't have enough yet, signs up will be extended until Feb 6, with brackets going up Feb 7.
If you think you have what it takes... come prove it.

Do you have what it takes? Come test your Modern mettle at The Dark Tournament.
This seems like the thread for this, and I figure posting here is okay since it's stickied.
Apparently, Jace, Vryn's prodigy completely killed Modern AND Standard at the place I went to tonight, due to people repeatedly misusing it. They'd been activating his ability, drawing before their opponent had a chance to respond, and trying to use the spell they drew to counter whatever it is their opponent was doing.
I ended up playing commander instead, playing my Ghave deck against a Rhys deck. It was rather fun.
ok... just curious... going in blind, how viable is sphinx's tutelage in modern? minus etron and affinity, is there enough cards sharing colors in decks that, with lots of draw power, this can be a viable win con???

My H/W list
I'll pick movie. I watched Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo on T.V. today. I won't comment on it, there isn't much to be said.
On the modern topic: I had a 24/24 Ajani's Pridemate on turn 3. I went on to lose that game. Path to Exile is the death of me sometimes.

Anyway, here's one of the games. I'm on the draw:
Him: Swamp, Bloodchief Ascension
Me: Mountain, Figure of Destiny
Him: Swamp, Glistening Oil targeting my FoD
Me: Clifftop Retreat, cast Honor of the Pure. FoD is a 2/2 infect. Swing, 2 poison.
Him: FoD gets a -1/-1 counter. Bojuka Bog, Bloodghast.
Me: Plains, cast Honor of the Pure, level up FoD. It's a 3/3 infect. Swing, 5 poison.
Him: Put a -1/-1 counter on FoD. Swamp, swing with Bloodghast. Cast Spiteful Visions. At end step, put a counter on Bloodchief Ascension.
Me: Take 1 from Spiteful Visions. Plains, level up FoD. It's now a 4/4 infect. Swing, 9 poison.
Him: Put a -1/-1 counter of FoD. Swamp, cast Stab Wound targeting FoD.
Me: Take 2 from Stab Wound. Take 1 from Spiteful Visions, swing with a 1/1 infect FoD for 10 poison. GG.
Thanks for the assist! My hand was loaded too, Mirran Crusader, Banisher Priest, Bolt and Helix. Fun times!
I don't always post about Rafiq of the Many, but when I do, I cardlink to the original artwork, and not the supplementary product version.
"I trust myself to do my duty, even unto death. It's what comes after that I'm afraid of."
"Just fight without fear. Your soul is protected by the hand of Avacyn and will never submit to evil."
Both arts of dark confidant, deathrite shaman, future sight tarmogoyf, etc
Coincidence? I think not.
Next time they print an interesting creature with a palm/hand facing up, pick up a foil playset. You heard it here first.

Bonus: Liliana of the Veil too even though not a creature... ITS SPREADING TO OTHER PERMANENTS
Foil Ajani's Chosen will skyrocket in price soon.
