What it is?
A multiplayer(3+ players) and 1v1 singleton format focused on deck building based on a legendary creature or planeswalker colors, those that are the commnaders of a deck.
What is the diference from this to normal commander and its other variants? a) The format is based on the modern format thus every card in a standard set since 8th edition-and-forward and any non standard set that is legal in modern (Modern Horizons) are also legal in Modern Brawl. b) Any Planeswalker that is legal in the format can be a commander. c) There is no banlist but instead a points sistem. On deck building players need to be aware that some cards use Vita points (from vitality) and althought you can use all the vita points available for deck building this is not always a good idea. (on how Vita points modify the gameplay see the rules section)
Deck Building
Each deck must contain 60 card + a commander + 15 cards sideboard (sideboards are used for between games changes on the deck and for cards that search outside of the game)(a deck will have a total of 76 cards counting the main deck+sideboard+commander).
Each deck has 10 Vita points to spend on cards that have a vita points cost. This is a way to restrict powerfull cards without the need of a banning, if a combination is way too powerfull or unfun for the format some of those cards may have their vita points cost increased soo players change their deck in a way to remove powerfull cards soo the combo is still in the deck or remove the combo or part of it. The vita points of the cards in deck + Sideboard cards + the commander can't be more than 10.
Rules
-This format uses all the normal rules for mtg + the rules of commander and brawl (commnader tax, and change of zones, planeswalkers and legendary creatures as commanders) + a its own set of rules.
-Each player starts the game with 20+ the double of not used Vita points they have from deck building (if a deck has 5 used Vita points in it then the player gets 30 initial life points if it uses 0 VP then the player starts with 40 life)
(this is a way to make aggro and midrange decks more relevants and make the deck building of focused decks more dificult, and a way of "restricting a card" by increassing its vita points cost soo players feel the urge to at least have some kind of interaction in their focused decks after one piece of it gets "taxed") (The promisse of extra life points may also make players use more budget friendly options for cards that have VP costs)(Aggro may become too powerfull at some time soo expect to see some increasse on aggro cards soo the format dont becomes an aggro format)( we may decreasse the cost of other cards based on the increasse of others that goes in other decks, for exemple we may increasse the VP for Goblin Guide and decreasse the points of another goblin, soo mono red burn-aggro may not be able to play the card but a goblin tribal deck can play it, or decreasse the cost of a ally or of a card that goes in another deck that it may be popular)
-During deck building you may assing other legendary creatures or planeswalkers to be the seccondary commanders of your deck(increassing their points by 1)(you may choose more than one). During sideboarding you may change your commander between your main and seccondary (in the 3th+ game you may change a seccondary commander for your main one)(i say third and beyond cause you can only change to a seccondary commander after the first game of a match during sideboarding).
-To cast a seccondary commander you need spend mana of each of yours main commander's color identity, if the mana cost of the commander + the commander tax is not enought to cast it using colored mana, the seccondary commander will cost an aditional number of mana soo you can pay the colored mana to pay its cost(on rule 906.13b bellow
906. Modern Brawl
906.1. In the Modern Brawl variant, each deck is led by a legendary planeswalker or legendary creature designated as that deck’s commander. The Modern Brawl variant uses all the normal rules for a Magic game, with the following additions.
906.2. A Modern Brawl game may be a two-player game or a multiplayer game. The default multiplayer setup is the Free-for-All variant with the attack multiple players option and without the limited range of influence option. See rule 806, “Free-for-All Variant.”
906.3. Each deck has a legendary planeswalker or legendary creature card designated as its commander. This designation is not a characteristic of the object represented by the card; rather, it is an attribute of the card itself. The card retains this designation even when it changes zones.
Example: A commander that’s been turned face down (due to Ixidron’s effect, for example) is still a commander. A commander that’s copying another card (due to Cytoshape’s effect, for example) is still a commander. A permanent that’s copying a commander (such as a Body Double, for example, copying a commander in a player’s graveyard) is not a commander
906.3a Each deck has a main commander that is the default commander of the deck for rule 906.4, see 906.12.
906.3b If a player’s commander is a meld card and it’s melded with the other member of its meld pair, the resulting melded permanent is that player’s commander.
906.4. The Modern brawl variant uses color identity to determine what cards can be in a deck with a certain main commander. The color identity of a card is the color or colors of any mana symbols in that card’s mana cost or rules text, plus any colors defined by its characteristic-defining abilities (see rule 604.3) or color indicator (see rule 204).
Example:Bosh, Iron Golem is a legendary artifact creature with mana cost {8} and the ability “{3}{R}, Sacrifice an artifact: Bosh, Iron Golem deals damage equal to the sacrificed artifact’s converted mana cost to any target.” Bosh’s color identity is red.
906.4a Color identity is established before the game begins.
906.4b Reminder text is ignored when determining a card’s color identity. See rule 207.2.
906.4c The back face of a double-faced card (see rule 711) is included when determining a card’s color identity. This is an exception to rule 711.4a.
Example:Civilized Scholar is the front face of a double-faced card with mana cost {2}{U}. Homicidal Brute is the back face of that double-faced card and has a red color indicator. The card’s color identity is blue and red.
906.5. Each Modern Brawl deck is subject to the following deck construction rules.
906.5a Each deck must contain at least 61 cards and a sideboard of at least 15 cards, including its commander.
906.5b Other than basic lands, each card in a Commander deck must have a different English name, unless stated otherwise.
Exemple:Relentless Rats has a ability that alows decks to have any number of relentless rats and thus a deck can have any number of this cards, the same is true for other cards with similar text.
906.5c A card can be included in a Modern Brawl deck only if every color in its color identity is also found in the color identity of the deck’s commander.
Example:Wort, the Raidmother is a legendary creature with mana cost {4}{R/G}{R/G}. Wort’s color identity is red and green. Each card in a Wort Commander deck must be only red, only green, both red and green, or have no color. Each mana symbol in the mana cost or rules text of a card in this deck must be only red, only green, both red and green, or have no color.
906.5d A card with a basic land type may be included in a Commander deck only if each color of mana it could produce is included in the commander’s color identity.
Example:Wort, the Raidmother’s color identity is red and green. A Wort Commander deck may include land cards with the basic land types Mountain and/or Forest. It can’t include any land cards with the basic land types Plains, Island, or Swamp.
906.5e Some cards have a Vita Point cost. The sum of all the vita point costs in a deck can't be more than 10.
906.6. At the start of the game, each player puts their commander from their deck face up into the command zone. Then each player shuffles the remaining 60 cards of their deck so that the cards are in a random order. Those cards become the player’s library.
906.7. Once the starting player has been determined, each player sets their life total to 20 + 2*[remaining vita points] and draws a hand of seven cards.
906.7a A player minimum starting life total is 20 and the maximum is 40. The number of remaining Vita points is established as P=[10- the total cost of Vita points on cards in a deck]. The Starting life total of each player is 20 + double the number of remaining Vita points or 20+ 2*P.
906.8. A player may cast a commander they own from the command zone. A commander cast from the command zone costs an additional {2} for each previous time the player casting it has cast it from the command zone that game. This additional cost is informally known as the “commander tax.”
906.9. If a commander would be exiled from anywhere or put into its owner’s hand, graveyard, or library from anywhere, its owner may put it into the command zone instead. This replacement effect may apply more than once to the same event. This is an exception to rule 614.5.
906.9a If a commander is a melded permanent and its owner chooses to put it into the command zone this way, that permanent and the card representing it that isn’t a commander are put into the appropriate zone, and the card that represents it and is a commander is put into the command zone.
906.10. The Modern Brawl variant includes the following specification for winning and losing the game. All other rules for ending the game also apply. (See rule 104.)
906.10a A player that’s been dealt 21 or more combat damage by the same commander over the course of the game loses the game. (This is a state-based action. See rule 704.)
906.11. The Modern Brawl variant uses the Sideboard option. See rule 100.4.
906.11a Each card in the deck + sideboard + the commander must have a diferent english name. Rule 906.5. takes precedence over rule 100.4a.
906.12You may assign other legendary Planeswalkers and legendary creatures as seccondary commanders during deck building. Each seccondary commander must be legal in your deck.
906.12a Between games while sideboarding you may change one commander for another
Exemple: while sideboarding for game 2 you may change your main commander for a seccondary commander. While sideboarding for game 3 you may change your main or seccondary commander for another seccondary commander.
906.12b Each seccondary commnander has a increase in Vita point cost of 1 during deck building.
Exemple: If you have Wrexial, the Risen Deep in the main deck or in the sideboard( 0(zero) Vita points) but you listed it as one of the seccondary commnaders for your deck even if you don't use it as a seccondary commander during a game, the card still costs 1 Vita point instead of 0 Vita points because you listed it as one of your options for seccondary commander.
906.13. Casting a seccondary commander from the command zone is the same as casting a main commander from the command zone (see 906.8) but if the seccondary commander doesn't have the same color identity as the main commander follow those steps:
906.13a To cast a seccundary commander from the command zone you need to spend at least one mana of each color of the main commander's color identity.
Exemple You have Yarok, the Desecrated as the main commander and Ashiok, Dream Render as the seccondary commander. After sideboarding you put Ashiok as the commander for the next game. Whenever you play Ashiok you need to pay at least one green mana, one blue mana, and one black mana to cast it.
906.13b If the mana cost plus the commander tax of the seccondary commander is not enought to fullfill 906.13a then the seccondary commander cost {x} more to pay and that cost can't be reduced, where x is a number equal to the number of mana color left to pay soo that 903.13a is possible.
Exemple You have Child of Alara as the main commander and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben as the seccondary commander. After sideboarding you put Thalia as the commander for the next game. Whenever you play Thalia you need to pay at least one white mana, one red mana, one green mana, one blue mana, and one black mana to cast it. As Thalia has a mana cost of 1W, for the first time you play her from the command zone you she will cost a adition {3} and you can only spend {WUBRG} to cast her. The seccond time you play Thalia from the command zone she will cost {3W} (+{2} from the command tax) and she will cost a additional {1} to cast her for {WURBG}. The third time you play her from the command zone she will cost {5W} and because you can pay {WURBG} to cast her this time and the following times she will not have a additional cost. Those additional costs can't be reduced by cost reducing effects.
