Or also known as a Kamigawa-Slide deck, or just Sway. Wooteva. I am here to prophosize the greatness of this deck and its winnings it holds.
I have played this deck the last 3-4 weeks online but have only gotten serious about it the last two as I was sick of Gifts (my deck of choice and about ~60% of the other people at the PTQs I attended). What concepts arn't popular that is a very solid build against Gifts, Black, WW, Sligh? Even decks like U/R Arcane, Snakes, Rat, ect.
Ah, well. Lets start using Green for the awesome Mana-Acceleration (doomo Sakura-Tribe Elder and Kodama's Reach ). Alright, what "concept" do we want? Well, I really loved wiping the board when I ran a Gifts Deck based off Kenji Tsumura's which ran 4 Final Judgements. I also ran a very solid and competiting U/G Gifts Control at Regionals and would like to keep that theme. Well, what blue do we have? Hmmm, not much. Not like we have ubah control like Bribery but we have a great new card from Betrayers that is named Sway of the Stars that is kinda like Final Judgment. I mean, what the heck. I can get this card in the $1 binder at my local store (Dragon's Lair in Omaha Nebraska, best shop evaaa). Well, it costs flippin 10 mana but the mana acceleration that Kamigawa has brought is rediculous. Not to mention we have a fancy new card in Champions that is gaining popularity after its numorous appearances in PTQs around the world. That card is Heartbeat of Spring , which only increases the insane mana accel that is has been upgraded to mAccel++.
Alright, so we are running Green, Blue, and White. Wait, doesn't Sway let you restart the game basically? Hmmm, I guess I can use that if thigns are getting bad so I can draw a great hand a win! But I don't have creatures with haste.. hmm this stinks.
WAIT.. ONE.. SECOND... Otherworldly Journey PLZ. Okay, this card is ubah. I mean, with so much mana.. I can play this before I play Heartbeat and then just win. I winnnnn. Yesssss. Okay, now what else has something like this? Ah, a white spirit o'course. Hikari, Twilight Guardian . Look at that built in Slide effect. Alright, techniqually, after putting a fatty down and having Hikari out, I can play Otherworldly Journey on the other, and have them both go to the RFG pile. And for 10 mana I will play Sway. Now with heartbeat out you only need 6 lands out for this combo to go off.
Anyways, you guys can figure the rest. I currently run two Hana Kami just for the sake of getting a weakling out, being able to use its abilitiy, and for Hikari. I also run fatties such as Ayumi, the Last Visitor , The Unspeakable[/CARD (eveyone guesses I run this and.. they are right! Ha ha!) , Myojin of Seeing Winds (doomo Kenji-san, I have seen the greatness of drawing a zillion cards at once, not to mention a nice 3/3), and of course ubah-fat Sakura-Tribe Elders for major damage!
Now currently, I feel the maindeck has been super sweet in action but I may change a card or two around until my next PTQ comes around next saturday. But the thing I feel uncomfertable is the SB. So, please remark on that.
I can't urge you enough to try out this deck a fair ammount of times, but I don't mind someone being the devil's advocite and giving general advice. So without further adue...ness...
Now, the SB is very sketchy. Currently the Wear Away is needed, hands down. Shining Shoal has had its moments when playing crazy agro/burn deck. Azusa increases mana accel, and is nice to put some lands out after using Myojin or even after Sway in some odd scenario. Hokori is Hikari's evil brother (literally, dawn and dust in Japanese/Nihongo) and is a nice control. Meloku is always beneficial with the mana accel and also re-using a Tendo Ice Bridge . And I am not sure but Hisoka's Defiance is nice because there is a lot of Arcane and Spirits (go figure). Speaking mostly of Kokusho, the Evening Star , Cranial Extraction , Etheral Haze (lock), same with Souless Revival , and other things (kinda on a rant about Gifts, heh).
And one last note.. please forgive the billions of typos and grammical errors that are in this post. /forgiveness!
Okay, I accidently clicked on a link as I was near finish writing this and it erased it all. I wrote much more but now it is dead.. Oh well. Lets have a hasty go at it again.
So far I am currently 14-3 with this deck, which is pretty darn good. The wins are mostly swift unless my opponent can topdeck something fantastic or I just do a simple mistake or have to mulligan (which doesn't happen a lot.. the mulligan part... ) Here is a lil summary of what is going on.
Gifts: Gifts, oh how I hearted you at one time. But now, I see how your slow mechanics were once my weapon of choice. Now I can make a new game but start with a nice big, plump, fatty on the board read to gnaw on your life points. Though decks that run Timestop I applaud, they usually waste it on a creature I put down. Also the fact the Heartbeat version of Gifts uses.. Heartbeat, it only assists the swiftness of this deck. Though Cranial can hurt, I almost always side in Hisoka's Defiance and other creatures in the second game. I have yet to lose to a Gifts deck.
White Weenie: What is great about this, is having no almost no fear when they are swinging for a constant number that'll only grow. I will chump with Sakura or even Hana Kami but soon enough I'll have a creature out that can take theirs on, even if they have the jitte out. Though WW seems to dystroy my heartbeat quite a bit, which I do not appriciate. I will drag the game on, like a Gifts deck, getting all the lands I need to execute the plan old-school style. Also I am not having much trouble when some of the WW decks sideboard in Hokori, Dust Drinker as I will just put mine down so they explode in a fiery blaze. Also siding in Myojin of Cleansing Fire is another nice board-wipe against WW.
U/R Arcane: I was originally going to run this as I made a version when BoK came out that costed me a whole $9 to make at my local comic book store, so I had all the commons and uncommons. I managed to nab a few Uyo and Kaho for $1 a piece (I'll get back to that later) and started to make this deck when I fell in love with Gifts, but I love this build. If I can't stop it fast enough, it can and will win. Other than drawing a bad hand that can't stop it, I will usually be in the single digits of life before I get Sway of to stop their menace. But back to the Kaho/Uyo deal, I originally had that deck called "Wizards cast Arcane Spells!" which abused Kaho and Uyo's abilities, along with Twincast. Who needs to have 20+ arcane cards in their library when they can do 7 and double it twice, or get all the lava spikes from your library and casting them all at once? Ugh, just sick. I still managed to win thankfully.
BG Spirits: Call it Spiritcraft or whatever you may like, it is a deck I built for a friend that has many of the same concepts I see in this forum. Basically abusing Footsteps of the Goryo with Kokusho, the Evening Star, and also running Kodama of the North and Iname, Death's Aspect. Having to be careful of Cranial and getting that sick combo off, I am usually safe because the acceleration.
Snakes: again, I did write a lot more on this but I will keep it sweet. Using Final Judgement on their army of snakes once, twice, or even three times its funny. Then it is fun to do Sway and just see their reaction as they try to draw a good hand as half their creatures have been RFG'd.
Rats: Read above, rinse and repeat. Though their mechanics are a bit more notorious and offensive off the bat, other than that.. Rat Trap!
Enduring Ideal/Honden: Play your Hondens, that is fine. When I Sway and you laugh that you'll still get an Enchantment out, I will say I don't care. Swing for the win. Though I would like for the player to choice some better enchatments that would effect my creatures, I need to playtest this more. More specifically my brother Ixidor...
Sligh/Red Agro: This matchup can suck. I am not trying to sound like God here saying this deck is the best ever, but it is fairly good and I make a big deal because I don't see anyone using it. But against a nasty herd of Akki, this deck can get owned. I pray to get a good beginning hand and keep my mana acceleration up so when they assault me and destroy my lands, I have more. That is all I can do until I can wipe the board.
Mono Black [Agro/Control]: Be it the 'agro' or 'control' version of this deck, the only real trouble lies with Cranial and if I am needing to be discarding any cards. Yeah Heroe's Demise and Sickening Shoal are sick but there is a thing called Otherwordly Journey
Okay I am too much of a pile to write any more. Any comments would be fantastic..
Yeah I was running two for the longest time and was never able to get it despite all the draw/shuffle mechanics running around. I will be testing it with two again.
Any more suggestions or comments? And thank Bogan for the first reply after all this time
PTQ is on Saturday, I'll have results by that night but until then, keep it coming and even after
