This Big Red style list was pilot by Hard Bitten Jan at a recent GP to a Top 16 finish. While it was extremely roughish, this list should be considered since it represents the first successful red deck in some time.
One of the few successful lists to main deck 3 Pithing Needles mostly because a gifts list really doesn't need it. Other than needles this is actual a fairly easy deck to make, but from my experience quite challenging to play correctly with number crunching becoming a factor as early as turn 2. I have been playing it to some success online, but my list doesn't run pithing needles due to budget issues.
I know its odd for me to double post, but the first thing that I found weird was the sideboard chioce of 3 Blind with Anger. I think this was a poor chioce, perhaps someone can enlighten me as to what matchup this card improves.

It can be handy to remove a blocker when Kumano or Jiwari swings.
The actual most useless card in the SB is Boseiju since there is hardly any countering out there except in the rogue MUC/UG decks and even then, there is so much burn here that it shouldn't matter
I don't understand why the player dosen't maindeck Kumano though....that just seems counter-productive.

What would you suggest removing from the main deck for Kumano though? The only thing I can think of is if you suspect a more aggro metagame then you switch the genjus for the kumanos otherwise I just don't see much space.

Exactly.....I think the red Genju is HORRIBLE PERIOD in any matchup. To me it just looks like a free Stone Rain for the opponent.

With the metagame seeming going back to Gifts, I think moving Zo-zu the maindeck and increasing it to four would greatly speed up the control matchups... as well as thinking about running Adamaro since he punishes control as well.

Adamaro did nothing for me at my PTQ. He always ended up immediately removed, or he was no better than an Ogre.
I dunno about the red genju being terrible. I would say the reason it is there is for the Gift's match up. If you can get even one 6 point hit in then all you need is a 4 point spell to put them on the all important 10 number.
I dont like the 4 Hidetsugu's Second Rite. I think that is to many for the deck. I like 2 personally or maybe 3. Not 4.
Once someone gets down to 10 or close to it they are going to burn. So if you are able to get them to 10 you need 4 mana open as well so you can kill them on the same phase if not they are going to burn for 1 and be at 9. Then you have 4 useless cards. Yes they are now at 9 but the deck in itself seems to run out of steam sometimes.
I want to try testing out Mindblaze. Atleast one in the main deck or something to give that extra punch.
You have to play the threat of Hidetsugu's Second Rite I think. After game one its likely that he sideboarded it out for Gaze of Adamaro often. Mindblaze is a bad idea I think, but if you are going to try it. Try 4. That is the best way to find out how often it is useful or dead and it will teach you how to effectively use it faster.
I should also note that so far in my testing with the deck. You rarely, if ever, swing with Jiwari. He is simply an uncounterable expensive Starstorm. Which is awesome.
Well after even more testing I have found that I want to play 10 second rites because you are almost always in situations where you want one. The problem is you don't always draw one. Game 2 and 3 you really do need to board them out though cause when people burn to 9 your gaze makes them pay.
1 Mikokoro, Center of the Sea
1 Shinka, the Bloodsoaked Keep
4 Hearth Kami
3 Jiwari, the Earth Aflame
4 Frostling

4 Glacial Ray
2 Genju of the Spires
4 Lava Spike
4 Flames of the Blood Hand
3 Zo-Zu the Punisher
4 Gaze of Adamaro
1 Jiwari, the Earth Aflame
1 Sideswipe
3 Blind with Anger
2 Kumano, Master Yamabushi
1 Boseiju, Who Shelters All

Anyway what are your thoughts on this list?
