I think this card has a tonne of potential, as a glorious anthem with a spell-cost reduction benefit and colorless cc.
The only thing I found where people talked about it was in the G/R spiritcraft deck, but even there most don't like it.
What colours are needed to really reap the benefits of it? Any x/2 spirit gets the kick of growing bigger than hideous laughter, and all benefit from the generic 1/1 just for dmg. But where do you get the arcane benefit best?
I mean what colour is going to give me some nice mana gain via the reduced arcane CC? Would a blue/white deck be able to take advantage here? Or is green pretty much mandatory as soon as spirits are mentioned?
I'm thinking G/U with genjus for sure. With 1-2 gohei's out, consuming vortex might actually be splicable!. Debating trying to use budoka pupil and callow jushi. I know budoka is badass when he flips, but is Jushi workable or is he just a waste of space?
I'll probably try to mana accel into jetting glasskites, and also run strength of cedars since its casting cost might actually be payable with goheis down, and when one of my 2/2's slip through I can drop it for a big buff.
Debating elder pine of jukai, will depend on if I can soulshift anything useful with him.
Other than the glasskites (who can really mess with black removal) and the blue genju, what blue spirits should I be looking at?
I'll have to scan the cards and try to find some synnergies. I like the glasskites, but I doubt they have anything to share with green besides mana accel to play them faster.
"Wall of Roots trades with Doran. Doran doesn't like Wall of Roots. You would think he might, as they are both trees. But Doran is a sociopathic tree. He and other trees don't get along – hell, he doesn't even get along with himself. Have you seen what happens when you cast two Dorans? Let me tell you, it isn't pretty." -Uri Peleg
The total cost of the spell = casting cost + any splice costs. So if I play wear away and splice a vortex the total cost is 3UGG. With a Gohei in play it would be 2UGG.
2. It would defintely be most worth in White Spirits, using it as a Glorious Anthem, plus a cost reducer for any Arcane pump you are using.
1. Hideous Laughter, from what I've seen, has seen FAR more play than Final Judgment, if for no other reason than Black decks outnumber White decks.
2. Tell you what, find a deck's worth of competitively playable White spirits and maybe that will work. Let's see...there's Lantern Kami, and Waxmane Baku and...wait, that's it.
I think G/R Spirits really is the best use for Gohei. It pumps your already-strong creatures, it cuts the cost on Glacial Ray and co., and it tends to fit the mana curve well. However, I HAVE seen pretty good-looking mono-G Spirit Beatdown decks that can run Gohei near the top of their mana curve (only KotST costs more).

no, it does not reduce the slice cost, it doesnt say in addition to the casting cost, it sais, reveal and pay the slice cost to add the effects.
Splice onto Arcane 3U

seconded. the arcane cost is something you pay when you declare the splice. if, on the other hand, the reminder text were to say something that specifically stated adding the splice costs to the casting costs, then the gohei could reduce splice costs. however, here i think consuming vortex may become spliceable because it's U/G, with like eighty gajillion good accelerators. therefore, 4 extra to bounce a creature when you reach for your 2 basics is pretty good.
psst. you guys are wrong, aitrus is right. it lowers the ENTIRE cost of the spell by 1. splice costs make up part of the entire cost so splicing a consuming vortex onto a spiritual visit would cost 2UW (W + 3U - 1). however splicing consuming vortex onto hideous laughter would cost 4BBU(2BB+3U-1).
If you want to use Blue spirits with the Gohei, perhaps use Teller of Tales? After all, you're going to be playing lots of Arcane since it's cheaper...
I'd say perhaps your best options are with Spiritual visit, Promise of Bunrei, and most of the White spirit's in block (Kami of the ancient Law in particular), heck even throw in Celestial Kirin and make it a real beating.. :)... your Bunrei and Visit tokens are immune to the Kirins destroy effects...
Some great Ideas here guys, makes for some exciting choices for a color base: Green, White or Blue?
I tried online with monogreen, but the beats just weren't strong enough and I was too succeptible to just about every card possible as green has nothing for removal.
I was running kami of the hunt, kodama south, soilshaper, couple elder pines, couple loam dwellers (more for a 2/2 for 2 than his ability), 4 wear away and 4 unchecked growth + 4 gohei.
Currently toying with green/red/black but the deck is still way too vulnerable to everything from hokori to ire to laughter and the beatdown is not fast enough. Glitterfang seems like an absolute must for any spirit-based deck, as does thief of hope... but I dunno. So far no luck on finding a strong combination of spirits/arcanes/colors to make the gohei truly badass.
you should just play U/R ire deck with gohei's main. it makes the deck run extremely well. Gohei will not lower the cost of splice but it will reduce cost of whatever your splicing onto. there was a pretty stout list of the deck in the PTQ top 8 list in the competive section under little rock.
the only changes that i recommend to this list are adding in 2 tendo and removing 1 island and 1 mountain. then remove the 1 ideas unbound, 1 desperate ritual, 1 peer through depths, and 1 reach through mist then add 4 Long-Forgotten Gohei
I have tested with this deck and it does do well. it is very mulligan heavy so don't be afraid to.

I've also had an interest in Long-Forgotten Gohei(LfG) since its release. I play quite a bit in the Magic Online: Casual Room and I've trying many different builds using LfG. I really haven't found one that can stand up to a net type deck but the ones listed below can be fun and once in awhile I can get a win. I'd have to say the strongest LfG build(s) are probably the Red & White one and the Ire deck. Since they've already been listed I won't post mine because they are very similiar to whats already here. But if you wanna try something different give one of these a whirl. They are not the "best" build of course so change whatever you don't like.
Thanks,
Bob
