Please keep all talk about the cost of Standard cards here. Any threads made about the price of Standard outside of this thread in these forums will be infracted.
I want to complain about the price of Snapcaster Mage. I hear people saying that this card will be down to $10-12 but I am getting antsy about getting my playset. I turned down an offer of a playset for $63 shipped, so I hope I will not regret that.

WotC just needs to print more cards... I think people would spend the same amount of money anyways.
Player A purchased a new $400 deck because prices are so high.
Alternate universe: player A purchased 4 $100 dollar decks because the prices are so high.
There are tons of players out there that choose to never be competitive because they can't afford 3x of said $30 card. These casual players then choose to not play at FNMs or PTQs because they know that they will get womped on for having a budget deck... many of these same players then choose to play casual EDH with friends on the kitchen table.
High prices drive away a mass player base that could actually be spending more money due to attending FNMs, drafts and other casual sanctioned events.
WotC has not yet figured out the right balance of card worth and the maximum number of players attending events.
My Proposition on "printing more cards"
1. Print more cards. If say, WotC prints 20,000 cases of M12, they should instead print 35,000 cases.
2. They should print more expected money cards in the starter sets.
3. Make more money cards promos. Game day promos, FNM promos, that promo you get when you buy a box...
4. They should print foil packs like they did in alara. I'm guessing they didn't sell well or something... but hey, with the magic player base growing, maybe it could work again? I would like to do an all foil draft
5. Give out MORE booster packs at PTQs, states, regionals etc. and not just up the packs by 6 or 9. I'm talking about BOXES. The winner should get a CASE of product. 5th-8th a box at least. 3rd-4th should get 2 boxes. And 2nd should get 3 boxes.
And to add on to #5 (because top 8 prizes are small compared to the actual player base size) all entrants to said tournaments should get an entry promo from a previous set. For example, if we had a PTQ today, the entry would be a new promo solemn simulacrum!
Ya, WotC would be giving away a ton of stuff, but imagine the increased number of participants there would be!
I once decided not to go to states, to go have coffee with a friend that i see regularly... but if I could have gotten a promo fauna shaman..?
All in all, I think WotC can fix things, but they just choose not to.

how does making more cards make things cheaper? There is always going to be enough packs around. I;ve never seen a shortage of booster packs.
For there to be more cards in the aftermarket, more packs need to be opened, ie more money to be spent......that doesnt make the cards cheaper
And if I forgot what it was, i would walk into my local card store and see their display of it. sure the packs a few $$ more but Its the cards in it that made it expensive, not the amount made.
They could have made another 30% extra but jace still would have been the same price.

More supply of what? packs or singles?
Unless there is a 0 supply of packs which there has not been for a very long time, the price of single cards will stay the same.

Run out of boosters before the new set comes out? Dude I think that is a problem with your store, not a supply prob from WOTC. I've never walked into a store that didn't have boosters in stock 100% to god.
Sure, printing promos of cards will drop the original price of originals but honestly, how can you not understand that more packs (when we already have a surplus) will not make cards cheaper? The fact that all sets are made in plentiful amounts (ie all stores have their order forfilled), how is making more packs going to make things cheaper?
As both a played and a father of a kiddo who plays MTG it saddens me that some of the cards get as high as they have. Will we ever buy a new PW straight up, nope. But it does make the act of pulling one or making a good trade for one all the more thrilling.
As for the cards hovering around $5ish, we can save up for those, and most of the time they prove themselves to be worth it.
Prices can be daunting but 90% of the time since I have been back in, it's mainly hype that dives them up before hand and ends up being a slow descent down from their prerelease high.

I'm not sure how to explain it any better.
I said the distributor. not the shop...
the distributor has RAN OUT of product, and they can NOT get anymore, because WotC has no extras to give. understand?
your statement of having a surplus is not accurate.
Stop complaining about standard being expensive. Look at it like this. I invest a couple hundred dollars in a solid standard deck that wins. I go to FNMs and opens, and win, gaining me free product from these events. So you don't lose any money in the end.
Also, Jules_d1 is right. WotC doesn't need to print more cards. All that would do is flood the stores with more boosters than they need. I also have never walked into a store and they not have at least 1 box of a standard set. If WotC printed singles of the bomb cards that come out, THAT would make the individual price of THAT card go down. Otherwise, the price will stay the same.
Only way to drop the price of singles is to reduce the price of boosters. decrease booster price, increase booster sales, decrease cost of singles.
Problem is, there will be an influx of the cards people don't want, and stores that thrive off the cost of singles, won't make as much...
Going off of a typical card shop (not the net)
Situation
-They(card shops) open a lot of boosters to find good rares to put under glass, then they also sell the less useful rares, at a cheap price (in some cases close to if not less than it cost them to buy the boosters.)
-They sale these good rares to people willing to spend the money.
-People not willing to spend $20 for X card, are willing to spend a few bucks here and there for some boosters to get X card, or enough trade value to trade for X card.
PROBLEM
-if they decrease price of boosters, this will decrease the price of singles, so they will sell out of these good cards a lot quicker, because now card X is more in the range people are willing to spend to just outright buy the card.
-Selling out seems good, but in reality it's not, because now they have to open more boosters to find more of the good cards that are selling out, and in the process they get more crappy rares that less people are willing to buy.
**this also over saturates the card pool with cards people don't want to trade for, and making it harder to find someone to trade with, because why trade when it's much easier to just buy the card? (and for some people, trading is as much fun as the game itself)
--they have two realistic options, 1. stop opening boosters, forcing customers to buy boosters, but now the shop has lost credibility. 2. Raise the price of the good rare to $20 (which is where we started), selling more or less boosters. and not accomplishing anything other than damaging their bottom line.
An easy argument could be made that people could then buy those cards from online, because they would be cheaper. Ok sure, buy online all day long. then when you are having FNM tournaments at your local library with barely enough people to make a sanctioned match, make sure to reminisce about the times when you were able to go to a card shop and play FNM and get prizes.
I'm not saying i know what I'm talking about, but i have taken enough finance and small business classes to know that Hasbro [WotC if you prefer] is doing just fine.
i would still really like to hear how people handle Solar Flare i have been surprise intercourse with that for a while now what is your gameplan and what do you sideboard in and out?
if they decrease price of boosters, this will decrease the price of singles, so they will sell out of these good cards a lot quicker, because now card X is more in the range people are willing to spend to just outright buy the card.
The price of a single is whatever the market will pay for it. If the store can sell it for $20 and everyone wants it, they're gonna sell it for $30, and people will still buy it. Their supply is limited. There's no reason to sell out quickly if people will pay more.
Only way to drop the price of singles is to reduce the price of boosters. decrease booster price, increase booster sales, decrease cost of singles.
No you can also reduce the number of packs it takes to get a playset of cards, or increase the number of cards in the playset while keeping the number of packs it takes to get said playset the same.
Not to metion rarity level and reprinting patternts.
A 40 dollar mythic rare would constitute a must have 4 of that goes in many decks.
Stats About Mythics
-Mythics are on average 40% rarer than pre-mythic rares
(old blocks about 200 rares, Mythic blocks 35+ mythics)
-They are printing more new cards a year not less
(about 665 now vs. 630 in most pre-mythic block)
-To drop the value of a rare by $1 a mythic must go up $2
-In a 3 year time span deck prices doubled. I am petitioning for the removal of mythic rarity. Sig this to join the cause.
The price of a single is whatever the market will pay for it. If the store can sell it for $20 and everyone wants it, they're gonna sell it for $30, and people will still buy it. Their supply is limited. There's no reason to sell out quickly if people will pay more.
i addressed this already.
"2. Raise the price of the good rare to $20 (which is where we started), selling more or less boosters. and not accomplishing anything other than damaging their bottom line."
This will still decrease the price of singles for the reasoning i gave. -Cheaper boosters means more boosters opened, means more supply to meet demand, which means lower prices of singles. You're still going to have those money cards which people aren't willing to open a butt load of boosters for the chance to find one of, in which case they will simply buy the card.
My statement still stands, the only way to drop the price of singles is to drop the price of boosters. and this will only hurt the community as a whole.
No you can also reduce the number of packs it takes to get a playset of cards, or increase the number of cards in the playset while keeping the number of packs it takes to get said playset the same.
how do you expect to do that? either increase the number of cards in a booster, or decrease the number of cards in a set... either is a horrible idea.
There really is no realistic way for hasbro to decrease the price of singles without hurting the community as a whole. i really think hasbro knows what they are doing. and things like "decrease the number of packs needed to obtain a playset" just doesn't make sense (how would you go about doing this?)
i would still really like to hear how people handle Solar Flare i have been surprise intercourse with that for a while now what is your gameplan and what do you sideboard in and out?

No you can also reduce the number of packs it takes to get a playset of cards, or increase the number of cards in the playset while keeping the number of packs it takes to get said playset the same.
Not to metion rarity level and reprinting patternts.
Sig this to join the cause.
i addressed this already.
My statement still stands, the only way to drop the price of singles is to drop the price of boosters. and this will only hurt the community as a whole.
how do you expect to do that? either increase the number of cards in a booster, or decrease the number of cards in a set... either is a horrible idea.
There really is no realistic way for hasbro to decrease the price of singles without hurting the community as a whole. i really think hasbro knows what they are doing. and things like "decrease the number of packs needed to obtain a playset" just doesn't make sense (how would you go about doing this?)
