Something seems very wrong about this. 4 Grave Titan, 4 Wurmcoil, and 4 Surgical Extraction MD. What am I missing here? The more I look at it, the more I see alot of removal, and a way to nerf Kut. Only 24 lands....
Asking out a girl is like trying to cast a first turn Necropotence. Sometimes the other player will have the Force of Will to say no. You shouldn't let that stop you from trying it.
small town in non-urban part of Canada. population density of that county is 34.2 /sq mi, so basically rural. compare to population density of New York City: 27,532/sq mi. point made.
anyway, based on that top 8 it looks like he beat Valakut and lost to UB control. personally i'm surprised he beat Valakut, but sometimes you get there. deck looks like a pile to me though.
I see 4 Drowned Catacomb and 2 Creeping Tar Pit and has no Blue spells whatsoever. I can understand about the Spellskite thing, but he should at least run Preordain. Also, 4 Obliterator, 4 Geth's Verdict, 3 Grasp of Darkness, 4 Gatekeeper of Malakir while having 4 Tectonic Edge and 2 Inkmoth Nexus. How that guy can consistently get at least BBBB is beyond me.
EDIT: Lol @ UW singleton deck. Even the SB is made up of singletons.
Had to look up the store; it's the only one in Petawawa, and they had 18 people turn out. I'd like to know why they get SCG qualifiers and Toronto doesn't.
Haha. "mana screwed in the first game? No problem bro. Imma side in 1 extra swamp g2"
Actually, lands in the board isn't a horrid idea against an unknown meta. The general idea is that if you feel your deck has a big advantage on your opponent, you side in land because it is much harder to lose by manaflood then manascrew. You basically lower your chances of giving away a free game at the cost of speed, but you think your favored anyway, so it's worth it.
The opposite applies for if you feel you are the dog. If your deck is dead in the water or the opposing player is way better then you, you side out land and side in more gas under the plan of "If I'm going to lose anyway, why do I care if I get manascrewed?". That way if you do get lucky and draw your lands, you are in a much better place for the long run.
In a more known meta, you don't see this tactic as much because your board is more important for known matchups and you have more practice against your bad matchups and might have found new ways to beat them. But in a place with so little people, and obviously people will travel far to get there, knowing what you face will be a crapshoot. Your day could be full of Valakut, Twin, and U/W or you could face...well, 8 finisher MBC.
Even if the author is silenced, the performance is stopped, the story will not end.
Whether it's a comedy or a tragedy, if there is cheering, the story will continue on.
Just like the many lives.
For the us who are still in it and still in the journey, send warm blessings.

Having won easy tournaments with singleton decks before, I can affirm that they make you feel like such a boss every time you win. You are like, bro that was my only Mirran Crusader, and I drew it. Shweeeet!

Wow...those are horrible. Lmao I love the UW Highlander singleton list. At first I thought maybe it was some random Commander tournament. Had to count up the deck just to make sure.
Haha. "mana screwed in the first game? No problem bro. Imma side in 1 extra swamp g2"
^Duh Winning.
What I find most interesting is that these are SCG Qualifiers and not small-time FNM's or whatnot. Man, I guess Magic not only caters to everyone but to everywhere as well. Haha this made my day.
Reprints the one card that people point to when saying that art objectifies women.
Well done Wizards.
Liliana does not objectify women in any way at all. We have gotten to a point in our society that every single picture of a women must be objectifying a women in some negative way......blah blah blah.. That is not the case. (((Sarcasm)))Picture of a girl drinking a milk shake, must be sex related and putting women down, picture of girl sitting on a beach, picture of a girl driving a car, picture of a girl on the moon at a new space station.)))
You have a picture of an attractive strong power women who girls dress up as for anime conventions. What more do you want? The picture is fine, happy to see a reprint. Sick of of seeing people claim that everything in existence must be putting women down. Then all I have to do is replace the word "women" with anything else to get the same mentality; fish, cats, arabs, blacks, jews, men, environment, whites, chinese, old people, etc. It doesn't matter what word I put in. Stop sucking life out of everything man. That artwork of her is awesome. Stop putting stuff down man. Just stop. If the picture was really as negative as you claim she would totally nude, in a kitchen, making sandwiches and giving blow jobs. Her abilities would be horrible as well. +1 do nothing -2 do nothing -6 do nothing. Instead liliana of the veil is an amazing planeswalker comparable to jace, the mind sculpter with great art to appreciate.
My suggestion listen to some comedy radio for a while, pandora is free, youtube is free there is something out there for you. ***** go make fun of somebody. The whole world is so serious and campaigning for some cause, or someones rights, everything is a hate crime, racist, sexist. blah blah blah.
"O no mcdonalds must be slandering a hate crime against skinny people every time they make a big mac." hahaha jeeze You're just someone perpetuating another groups negative perspective that they've made you believe is correct. Look at the picture for a hour and tell me what's wrong with it? I don't see anything.
I have heard vague rumors of a moustache-dispensing vending machine in a distant laundromat, across the street from a tattoo parlor. However, this information is shaky, and time is of the essence.
Wow i was camping up near there last week... i shoulda stopped by and won that tourny and shown those guys what a tuned deck with a real sideboard looks like. LOL
...
just lol
EIGHT 6cmc finishers LOL. Im picturing the game now...
"Turn three bro, your turn. You have 12 life left."
"Okay i play a land and pass..."
"Okay you have 6 life... go ahead"
"Okay i play a land and geths verdict..."
"Annnnd you lose. GJ playing that 1 card all game"
"I can't believe i lost, i had a sweet opening hand of all titans and wurmcoils!!!"
Heh, I lived there until I recently moved to Toronto for work.
Petawawa is not far from Ottawa so I'm surprised more didn't make the trip, as we have had larger FNMs than 18 on occasion, though they are free and the local kids don't like to spend too much.
The town is a military town, likely a third of the population is always moving and actively in the military. The quality of the players is also always in flux though some of the locals are rather skilled (well, one or two). The deck lists sure made me smile though :D. I'm gonna go ahead and blame people coming from Ottawa for the bad ones :).
Sorry I missed it!
Good on them for finally getting the tournament run though! Maybe next year more will show up. They have an awesome shop set up there, the owners are also military chaps.
I wouldn't doubt small-town players. A group came to the current city I live in from a very small town and swept the floor with everyone. They were rude though, so they got banned.
To answer the OP's thread title -- yes, it is real in that it physically was played -- but no, it is not real, in the way that no mono black deck is real in Standard.

I actually agree with this and do in reasonable often in limited... but when it cost a SB slot to do it.... does not seem worth it. Unlimited basic lands in the SB is tech.
"I have no idea what it's like not to be a straight white male, and the experiences of others are irrelevant." -Conservative Motto
Calling someone a Commie is flaming and must be stopped, but turning the word Conservative into a loaded pejorative and using it over and over again is perfectly acceptable.
Everyone knows that good luck and good game are such insincere terms that any man who does not connect his right hook with the offender's jaw on the very utterance of such a phrase is no man I would consider as such.
we are as competitive as americans!!... depending where you are from. I played fnm in this tiny little town in alberta (like maybe 1-2k population), and there was 10 people there, only ONE of them had seen valakut before....like the card OR the deck, i was amazed lol

I don't get it.
On a side note, this deck from the same tournament is hilarious...only 1 5 drop creature though: http://magic.tcgplayer.com/db/deck.asp?deck_id=879353
the 8 finishers I'm gonna have to say is a bit much....

That's why i'm not surprise to see terrible lists like these show up in the top 8.

Yes but once you've added blue, you might as well get some of that awesome blue card draw.

"Sup dawg! I herd u like mountains so I equipped a mountain on your mountain so your can swing with land while you swing with land!"
How competitive are Canadians?
Anyway, I can see MBC become more competitive over time, but this doesn't feel like it's enough proof that it has reached that state yet.

The 2x Creeping Tar Pit and 4x Drowned Catacomb seems real loose though. He must've had some great draws.
