Using the deck list at the top of this page, minus 3 syncopate and replacing them with 3 dissipate my son went 2-1-1 at FNM. His two wins were against a UW Tokens, GB Zombies(me, and he legitimately won this freaking Pillar of Flame and dissipate).
Tied against a guy who ran Grave Betrayal style just killing anything he played which then my son had to kill back. Then when he played that one that gives you a x/x ooze token, my son traitorous blooded it, a 10/10 token for the win and then they drew.
Loss was to a GB zombie but his throat was hurting and he just wasn't caring about the game anymore. Poor kiddo feel asleep soon as we got home and got some medicine. Very proud of him learning a new style, heck even made 6th place finally.
Want to thank everyone in this subforum, and a big shout out to zemanjaski. Ypu maybe not a big Izzet guy but you have helped me before with choices I could relay to him and well, your postings help a person see deeper into it. You rock sir.
Well, I think I'm staying in Sledgehammer Red bandwagon - so sorry, if I'm discussing not-supported-anymore archetype, I just think it's such a blast to play that I love it.
Notes:
- no maindeck Pillar of Flame, due to metashift (at my FNMs there are like 2-3 zombie players)
- Vexing Devil: when I'm supposed to play cards like Pyreheart Wolf or Vexing Devil, I'll choose Devil. Why not Stromkirk? Early game Stromkirk is a blast. Early game Vexing Devil is fine. Lategame topdeck Stromkirk is terribly bad. Vexing Devil is at least 'meh, could be worse'.
- 4 pieces of Bonfire instead of Flames of the Firebrand. Slightly less flexxible if not miracl'd, incredibly strong when in miracle cast mode. When they tell you "this is the best red card now" you are supposed to take it.
- Brimstone Volley: welcome back! A bit of nonbo with Vexing Devil, besides of that, instant-speed 3 damage burn spell with option for going for the face for 5. I'll give it another try.
- I love my Sideboard enough to be able to say that I don't need splashing for B. 6 serious hosers against Zombies (Pillars & Grafdiggers). Mortars and Bloods for GW Midranges. Responses to Graveyard, Planeswalkers, Keyrunes, Wolf Runs, Entreat the Angels, large creatures... well, anything except of maybe Armada Wurm. I still hate it.
Interesting tech, your deck plays out much more like an aggro deck with mana sinks. I don't know how you'll do against Thragtusk.deck though. Maybe you just race them thanks to the Devil? I feel the Gore-House Chainwalker is the weakest link in Sledgehammer, not sure if Vexing Devil is the right replacement for it though. Good luck, let us know how it tests!

Well done by your son and congratulations to him for taking it so far. I really like hearing about people trying Izzet. Please let us know more as the deck developes.
Thanks and will do! Will post the full list once we make the final tweaks for SCG Dallas.
Well, this deck is called Sledgehammer Red and it's initial form was created by Zemanjaski when he was bored with RB Aggro (Dos Rakis). But yeah, you already spotted the big plan of this deck. It can play in controllish way as burn is very versatile, while also puts tons of pressure. You are getting the best of two worlds - speed of aggro deck (hey, it's still capable of Turn 4 goldfish) and incredible lategame thanks to playing 4 copies of Thundermaw Hellkite, Bonfire of the Damned and well, mostly quality cards.
Thragtusk isn't an issue for me. This deck is capable to create "engines" of damage if left unchecked. Stonewrigh is just amazing at doing it - especially when bounded with Ash Zealot. When you are able to dish out 10-15 damage per turn, you stop being afraid of someone gaining 5 life. The biggest thing I can't go around is Armada Wurm. This bastard kills me in 2 Turns if I was at 20, can't really be dealt with in any other way than miracling Bonfire for X=5 which sort of means we are in really bad spot while facing him.
You don't want to sneek under something. I stopped believing in goldfish TBH, mainly due to Terminus. I've seen people miracling it just to shove up my single Rakdos Cackler into bottom of deck. That is why we have ridicolous lategame. Thundermaw into Thundermaw!
Yeah, I've been playing Sledgehammer for a few weeks now. I don't know that I necessarily agree with Bonfire over Devil's Play, but it seems like it works okay. The Vexing Devil I kind of have an issue with, but it's good in the mirror or vs. aggro decks, or really any deck that can't gain life.

Alright, I know it's not perfect, but it's what I had access to just before Standard tourney. Sleeved up just in time for Round 1 and actually took it all the way. I've got some ideas of how it needs to be changed, just posting here for the betterment of the deck. Thanks guys, you rock.
HAHA you can't bore me to death Zman. I know that the conscripts should go in the board, they haven't done me MUCH good in the main. The shred freak needs to get out as well as the Brimstone. 2 Mizzium in the main has actually been helping me though, because most of my enemies are only dropping GoST or Miracle Angels.
Just remember though, I didn't have access to the FULL Sledgehammer build, so I HAD to make due. I'm just happy the results were great.
Also, this is not because of budget issues. I honestly didn't have time to head to the next town over to complete the build. And LGS was out of what I needed- I am not asking for advice on a cheaper version. I just posted this to show what I'm playing with and so we could talk about it. Thanks
I've been examining this deck and taking in a little of this a little of that, didn't really see a list like what i had in mind for this so i thought i would take my own crack at it and this is what I came up with.
Just personally i feel like some calls have been backward kinda. It's all meta relevant as always but i really like Pyreheart Wolf in the side for midrange. This guy makes them too thin on dudes really fast.
The one of conscripts in the side is for control, the extra biggie just helps you get there. He is really strong coupled with a hellkite but by himself he isn't great i think.
The mortars main is because there is alot of 4 to kill, and in this list i should hit 6 lands for the sweep. I find it to be more consistent than bonfire, and more versatile as well. I don't need the to their face damage. Once the sweeper lands i have the gas to feed the flame and win.
Alot of people would probably scratch their heads at the 2 Waif's and 2 freaks main but ultimately this is curve choices. I want 10 1 drops not 12. I wanted the bigger bodies occasionally too. The freak gets there more than people realize. The waif is really strong in my meta, but he gets dropped immediately in aggro situations for the pillar, and this is how i can keep balance.
I want to try out a Pyreheart Wolf list so this looks like it would be a good place to start. Though at first glance I might swap 2 Mountains for 2 Hellion Crucibles (because greed :D) and probably 1 Flames over 1 Brimstone main.
This is the list I want to try against an unknown meta. I haven't been able to get to FNM lately, but I'm guessing there's a healthy amount of G/W running around. The manabase is kinda screwy, but it works fairly well in testing. I'm also trying out a variety of threats to keep people guessing and to provide usable options no matter what I'm facing.
I will say that Hellrider and Falkenrath Aristocrat together make combat difficult for defending players, especially if they have instant speed removal on hand. I like creating difficult board states for opponents, which is also why I have the Guildmage and the Keyrune on hand.
The Sideboard is a mess, and it feels like I'm trying to do too much with it. At the same time, I'm reluctant to cut anything. The Flames of the Firebrand slots are probably the weakest, yet I like the flexibility of the card. If I cut them, then I'd go +1 to both Dreadbore and Ultimate Price.

The MD is pretty standard and should be fine. I would probably cut the Vexing Devil for a 3rd Devil's Play; GHC is much better than Shred-Freak in a Sledgehammer Deck

Alright. Don't know if I'm living in Magical Christmas Land, but I wanted to try splashing G for Deathrite Shaman. I also threw a couple Rakdos Cacklers back in, since it felt like my deck didn't really have that 1st turn punch anymore. Anyways, here it is:
What are the sideboard plans? You look a little soft to other aggro decks, but very strong against midrange and control.
I think it looks good.
I was thinking about taking the Hellkites out of the side and adding in Pillar of Flames. I'm indecisive about whether I should play Hellkite or Conscripts in the main. I'm also thinking about taking out the Cacklers, then adding in one more Shaman and KoI. I'm all over the place at this point, and I'm wondering if I should just go back to my original list?
Lots of questions. Um...its probably going to be matter what cards you're comfortable playing with ~ play style is very important with cards that are so similar in power level. I know that I am terrible with some kinds of Rx Aggro, but much better with others, even though they're ostensibly very similar decks.

Hellkite vs. Zealous Conscripts in the main board is probably a meta call, though I'm inclined to believe that Hellkite will probably be your most consistent option. Both of them do very similar things; open up holes and bash the opponent through them.
The part of me that lives in magical christmas land loves the idea of "living the dream" and stealing a Tamiyo when she's at 8. That's a huge case of win-more, as you're probably going to be pounding controls face anyway, but part of me gets all giddy just thinking about it.
Your list is running Aristocrat and Nighthawks, so part of me thinks that Hellkite might be the best way to go maindeck. He drops down, taps out anything that your opponent might have that could get between him and his vampire buddies, and swings in for big damage.
Conscripts obviously has good interaction with Aristocrat, but with seven fliers main deck I just think Thundermaw will do more work for you.
I think I would side Zealous Conscripts. Or just lose them entirely and keep Mark of Mutiny / Traitorous Blood in the side.
As a side note, I notice you have Appetite for Brains in the side. When will you side those in? I think Slaughter Games is your best bet for that sort of disruption, but Appetite comes with the advantage (unless you totally whiff) of being 1 cc. There's plenty of things you can snag with Appetite such as Sublime Archangel, Wolfir Silverheart, Thundermaw Hellkite, Jace, Tamiyo, and of course, Thragtusk... but against a good chunk of the decks that run those, Slaughter Games might do the work you need. Slaughter Games is 4 cc, so if you're on the play you can get the 4 drop that Appetite would have snagged (unless of course they have acceleration). 1 CC to snag a thraggy seems nice, but I'm scared to death of the card just swinging and missing. It really depends how important seeing your opponents hand is, I guess.

I have done it. Got an instant concession though
Last night I had a board of Cackler + Ash Zealot. My opponent had Tamiyo (5 counters, tapping down Ash Zealot) and a Restoration Angel. He passed the turn with the Angel tapped. I played Conscripts stealing Tamiyo; hit him for 5 with Conscripts and Cackler, then -2 Tamiyo on myself to draw 3; then in his upkeep I searing Spear'd Tamiyo to kill her
So Zealous Conscripts ability was "ETB: draw 2 and destroy target planeswalker"

After a month or so of lurking, I come up with a list for next week's Standard FNM. I based this from Dpaine's list. I am thinking of making a split of hellrider/archwing due to the fact that meta consist of jund and bant-control and G/W running EtA and LS. Well, without further delay, here is my list as of now:
I removed the Hellion Crucibles, Stonewrights, and Chainwalkers from my old list. Running straight Mountains allows me to run a play set of Shred-Freaks and builds consistency within the deck. I've found that Crucibles give me slight mana issues, so I took them out. Also, Shred-Freaks almost always get more damage in than the Chainwalkers. I was never happy to draw a Stonewright, whether in my opener or from a top deck, and since there's no Hellkite, Ash Zealot is the only 'really' strong soul bonding partner he has... and she eats removal for days. Shred-Freak doesn't have much sustaining power in battle, so Flames of the Firebrand/ Pyrehearts and SB Forge Devils take care of the chump blockers than can take him down so easily. So far I'm having a lot of success with this build. The only changes I can see being made would be + or - 1x Vexing Devil, + or - 1x Pyreheart Wolf, and maybe +1x Mountain. I think it's solid as is, though. Not sure if I like Mortars in the SB, but there isn't much better to put in unless you wanted a 'Go Big' plan.
EDIT: Now that I think of it, I may replace the Pyrehearts with some Fervent Cathars so that I can drop some Caverns in my mana base... Essence Scatter/Shatter is a pretty annoying thing for this kind of deck.
Tied against a guy who ran Grave Betrayal style just killing anything he played which then my son had to kill back. Then when he played that one that gives you a x/x ooze token, my son traitorous blooded it, a 10/10 token for the win and then they drew.
