Ok, so this list is very close to other big U builds. The real exceptions are a complete lack of counters. I prefer to go big or go home. Bombs is what this version is all about. More copies of them than the other versions.
More Rift. This is such a blow out if it resolves with overload. I'd look for room for a 4th if I can find another copy.
Opportunity. The big draw spell. This puts you so far ahead in CA the opponent will never keep up.
Bident is an all star here. You put on more board presence so blocking is harder. Plus it can force them to suside their team.
Aetherling is not the same Aetherling you see in the control decks. While he still is hard to kill and is an impressive clock. However I don't mind dropping him with no mana left open. You kill him? Good for. you. Meaning he is not one of my few paths to victory. I can pump him a turn or 2 faster than control decks. More of the Shrine has some good early devotion. Turn 1 raptor. Turn 2 weird, turn 3 spector means turn 4 ling ling with save mana available.
it's the only thread here for blue devo so i post here. i feel monoblue is just more consistent than splashing and already has the tools to beat every deck. moreover, having access to both Mutavault and Nykthos provides more value and speed.
Familiar is consistent and utilitarian. he almost always connects to trigger Bident.
Vassal and Deathcult provide +2 devotion and have evasion. And even help cast spells exiled with Nightveil.
Jace is good because he also counts for devotion.
Mutavault survives sweepers.
Another Bident from the board because it is critical against control. Plus 11 counters, you have the upper hand against them. It's okay to side out some creatures. Just play like a tempo deck and make sure their big spells don't resolve.
Considering that the most playable rogue in standard is notion thief, being able to be blocked by rogues is a lot less likely than loldodging doom blade or something. I don't think it matters a lot. I don't particularly like vassal soul and deathcult rogue but phantom warrior isn't exactly strictly superior in my opinion. I think I'd go with the rogue.
well there's another rogue called mutavault. but the point of rogue and vassal is to give you black and white mana off of nykthos to cast spells exiled with nightveil. also deathrogue can't be targeted by doom blade or ultimate price.
Mutavault blocking him and being in 80% of the decks in the format is kind of a problem for that guy, don't you think? He's practically a vanilla 2/2 for 3, and does absolutely nothing to help you cast stolen spells from Nightveil Specter, who actually does a pretty good job on his own getting the colors you need to cast their spells, from their deck.
And I think if you really want that white mana you're better off playing Hallowed Fountains with creatures that are better than Vassal Soul. Cloudfin Raptor is the popular choice; he'll very quickly be 2/3 and often 3/4 here.
who said i needed or wanted white or black mana so desperately as to screw my land base? that's just an incidental bonus. also familiar can give some white, thats why only one vassal. so you want to block the rogue with mutavault on turn three? go ahead and lose tempo. that's what tempo decks feed on. of course he helps nightveil, that's how devotion and nykthos works: you spend the same mana to get a bigger bonus.
Anyone tried Thassa's Emissary? is it good as another source of card draw?
