I like permanents that cost one mana and can have a big impact on the game. See: Deathrite Shaman, Grim Lavamancer, Sensei's Divining Top, Root Maze, etc. When I saw Hardened Scales and Retribution of the Ancients, I knew I had to at least try to do something with them. Cruel Sadist is also a favorite of mine, and she happens to work well with the enchantments. So, here's a deck! For my more competitive version of the deck, I plan on fixing up the mana base to make the deck faster, but that won't work on the budget.
The deck's name is a pun based on Hardened Scales (i.e. balancing the scales).
Current cost: $14.99. Beat that.
Remaining budget: $0.01
Hey, i put together this deck for Fnm and went 2-2. it was a lot of fun. I havent played standard in ages and was wondering what kind of side board should i make for it? seems like my meta is aggro. also, now that i have the deck, what should i be looking for to improve it? ($$) thanks!
Hi, I'm glad the deck worked for you! I'd be interested hear how certain cards performed. I haven't been able to try out the list myself yet because I don't have my playset of Hardened Scales yet.
The first thing you'll want to do to improve the deck is improve the mana base. 1x Urborg and 4x Windswept Heath would be great inclusions.
What decks did you struggle with/what cards seemed good against you? That would help a lot in constructing a sideboard.
Hey, thanks for the reply.Am def going to work on getting the Windswept Heath on board, in the mean time ive added 3 llanowar wastes. Also, ive been looking at other decks like this one and i want to make room for at least 2 of those 4 drops that give life link to creatures with counter. As far as the tourney report goes, i dont really recall a lot because i was trying to get familiar with a whole new format on the spot at FNM so :/ i was reading my cards, and their cards etc. it seems like the deck need removal although Sadist and Retribution of the ancients did put in some work! I am going to be playtesting this deck throughout the week and hopefully ill have a better report about the deck after next fmn.

@Kabirum I think Murderous Cut is fine, and actually the best option, now that we've lost most of our black kill spells. Delve can hit lands as well as creatures, and you never necessarily have to delve 4 to play Murderous Cut.
Also, Kabirum, Rotfeaster Maggot is not a bad choice at all. However, I'd probably run it in sideboard instead.
Now i don't reaaly play standard, so this is my first try out at a standard deck for a while.
Not exactly sure if this is how you make a tempo deck, but here goes.
card choices:
Spells, i favor instants unless especially powerful
I also favor Spells that replace themselves like feat of resistance
Other spells include ways to clear the way for attackers or give protection.
Not exactly sure if i should include any creature bombs but i do have a few expensive spells so maybe it would be possible: i am thinking Mystic of the Hidden Way or Riverwheel Aerialists, or maybe even just flying crane Technique.
All the creatures included thus far are cheap and efficient and all use prowess.
Lands decided to use the cheap tap lands and more heavily UW heavy.
Now to explain the sideboard
I have a lot of Red spells in it so i decided having some red mana lands might be useful if i was siding any of them in.
I feel mardu/WB warriors is my worst matchup but i can't seem to figure out what to do about it: they are aggressive with lots of kill spells. So i have barrage of Boulders to help the Arc lightning i already have maindeck.
Now the best matchups are probably Abzan and Temur: lots of big creature hate main deck and sideboard, i could possibly even add in Bring Low to the sideboard if Abzhan is more common and more threatening.
Now with burn away and coincidentally some of the big creature/ big spell hate I can handle Sultai quite well too.
So overall i am really mostly worried about the mardu/WB warriors match-up.
Oh and if i go against a Jeskai Ascendancy Combo Deck, it should go Well too since i have a few ways to disrupt the plan, but maybe i should include some enchantment hate.
The mirror match (jeskai tempo) is probably going towards the deck with more money.
Heyo. Decided to make a budget list on this thread because of how powerful High Sentinels of Arashin is for being so cheap. The card is obviously very powerful with other outlast creatures that buff the whole team, so we have Abzan Battle Priest and Abzan Falconer. These guys are great. We run Ainok Bond-Kin over Archetype of Courage for the simple fact that we need more 2-drops so that we can consistently curve out. While Ainok Bond-Kin is generally just a worst Archetype of Courage, we really need to land creatures on curve.
Finally we have the Ajani's Pridemate package, with 4xRadiant Fountain, and 4xHopeful Eidolon. Hopeful Eidolon is great in this deck, since we are really trying to curve out, and it can either be a 1-drop or 4-drop. t1 Hopeful Eidolon into t2 Ajani's Pridemate is alsoquite powerful.
This was built around the two copies of Empty the Pits I pulled in one pack! (1 foil, one not so shiny).
The win con is a fairly obvious mill yourself for as long as you possibly can, using spells like Death Frenzy, Ulcerate & Bile Blight to keep attackers at bay (Drown in Sorrow would work here, but it maybe too expensive). And, when your ready, exile your nyx weaver, fetch your empty the pits and just go to delve town for the win.
I hasten to add I have not played this deck yet so I have no idea how it would actually perform but it seems like a nice idea at the very least. If your going to play a card like pits then you want to go as all in as possible. I want millions of 2/2 zombies. AS MANY AS POSSIBLE!!!
The Despise are there to geat the threats this deck cannot answer (big nasties or planeswalkers)
I noticed recently that a lot of very aggressive black cards also happen to be humans. Going off of this, I made a mono black aggro deck that uses Obelisk of Urd and aggressive humans to overwhelm our opponents!
I'm not going to explain every card in the deck, just a few:
Grim Haruspex is an extremely strong card that I don't think is getting the attention it deserves right now. It's aggressively costed and, for this deck, we can conveniently make it look like a Ruthless Ripper, which might give our opponents pause about attacking.
Mogis's Marauder is one of the strongest aggressive cards right now. It basically can give everything intimate and haste, which should, in most cases, swing for game.
Gnarled Scarhide and Spiteful Returned aren't humans, but they are very aggressive black creatures that will bring the hurt to our opponents.
And more on the sideboard choices:
Rabblemaster is our enemy. It's something we can't race against very well, and thus, our best hope is to kill it. Festergloom will hit the tokens (and any other X/1's that happen to be lying around.) and let us block and kill Rabblemaster with pretty much anything in our deck. Ulcerate will also kill Rabblemaster. As will Bile Blight. If that fails, Whip of Erebos might at least let us try and make a race of it.
Crippling Blight is actually decent in the midrange matchup. The -1/-1 isn't that big, although it does mean we can kill early mana dorks, but we remove the option to block from one of their fatties, forcing them to try and race. Ruthless Ripper is also very good against midrange, which is why I run an extra two in side.
Commune because it enables the other cards. I'd play commune and murderous cut if you want a more stable sort. I'd play commune and strength from the fallen if you want a better beatdown game. Dead drop is bad due to inflexibility on top of being sorcery speed. Despise is not what you want. Any noncreature spell needs to be chosen very carefully. Game state simplification that doesn't fill your yard with creatures goes against the deck. Rakasha's secret falls under the category of not really contributing to the goal. As it stands, your methods of filling the yard are relatively slow. Nyx weaver is good for tech but doesn't fill as fast as you want. Wayfinder is what you want. Assistant is ok but misses in one critical job that commune succeeds in. Commune digs for a specific card. Not all your creatures just want to hit grave. Nighthowler, nemesis, and scavenger would all rather be cards you draw. Yes, you can fetch them back but that is what makes the engine clunkier than if you got them right away. Some deathtouchers and a black cat won't save you from aggro. The deck does not want many noncreature spells but to try to do it with creatures alone doesn't let you smooth the engine.
@quake004, I used the basis of your Scavenger Deck for my first real deck (It's been a little over a week since I started playing). During FNM, I went 2-2 with it. The main thing that beat the deck was Villainous Wealth. With as many creatures that are in the deck, my opponent got to summon between 6-7 of my creatures. I had a few suggestions to splash in blue, as well as several sorceries and instants. I dropped in 4 Countermands due to the fact that it's a counterspell, as well as drops four cards of your opponents into the graveyard. That has the potential to boost up Undergrowth Scavenger and Nighthowler. Along with those, I put in 2 Stratus Walk's, just to deal with other flyers and potentially unchecked damage, as well as three Murderous Cut's, and I got lucky with my promo card (Bident of Thassa). So, they have to block my deathtouch's. : ]
Also, if I do decide to stick with Green/Black/Blue, what do you think of adding Sultai Ascendancy? It would give you prior knowledge of what might end up in the graveyard. I know that the deck revolves around dropping creatures into the grave and such, but I think these are pretty cheap additions that'll boost the deck.

No one knows how bad another has it until he steps into the others shoes.
I friend also went 2-2 in FNM with this deck. In the first match he asked me what did I have against flyers and I had nothing so I think I'm going to put Graverobber Spider and Murderous Cut in the main. I like the counter against Villainous Wealth, don't like Sultai Ascendancy though because it is very similar to Nyx Weaver and it isn't a creature.
I think more serious testing needs to be given. Were flyers a problem the deck had often? Or was it just that first match? Same with Villainous Wealth. If your meta is swarming with 'wealth decks, then obviously you want to be able to deal with them. If it's not, however, then your devoting precious space in your deck/sideboard to something that's not going to be a problem very often.
Whip goes a significant way towards solving the double edged race matter as you will generally hit harder unless they're putting a halt to you at every turn in which case flying wouldn't be the real problem. Whip is diggable too. Wall of mulch helps a little vs aggro, then replaces itself and fills the yard.
I have toyed with getting back into standard for a while, and Khans has been very interesting for me. I got a box and broke open a ton of Abzan things, and it also got me thinking about Phalanx Leader, which has been a pet card of mine for the past year. I see other people are trying to work with it too, but I wondered if a GW Aggro deck could work, maybe one that had some mid-game recovery. Also, brewing budget decks has always been a hobby, always attempting to come in under a budget and still come out with something useful. This is a list I will be testing:
Average prices taken from TCGPlayer, as per usual. No defined sideboard yet, but there is still some remaining budget to work with there. It is admittedly a simple deck, as most aggro decks generally are, but the potential power of going into a turn 4 play with Favored Hoplite/Phalanx Leader/Abzan Falconer OR Tuskguard Captain with a Reap What Is Sown dropped on them is pretty amusing. And of course spells like Feat of Resistance help protect assets, Return to the Ranks can return your Hoplites, Leaders, and Ainok to the field; High Sentinels of Arashin LOVE being played after a Leader activation or a Reap What Is Sown, and Incremental Growth can almost be an Overrun for the deck with the right cards out. Oppressive Rays is a nice tempo card that can hijack an opponent's early play, and of course Banishing Light can take care of those harder targets (Gods, Walkers, etc). I only included 2 here due to them being almost $2 each... more expensive than the bloody rares. If the counters keep flowing the deck can outrace spells like Anger of the Gods and Drown in Sorrow, but it should have enough gas to get past one or two of them, but a turn 3 AoG will often pooch most strategies, although keeping mana open to drop a Feat of Resistance on Phalanx Leader can save him, and maybe buff another creature long enough to survive.
This is all pretty rough, but I will update as I have a chance to test it out, and also figure what sideboard cards would be the most useful. I'm thinking Ajani's Presence or Ephemeral Shields will likely be a 4-of in the SB at least. The rest I am uncertain of, but suggestions are welcome.

Background
This deck is actually a modded version of JOU´s intro deck: Voracious Rage. The minotaur base was there, and with a few additions the deck could actually be a competitive deck.
The manabase is simple.4 bloodfell caves, 4 swamps and 12 mountains. The reason for this is that most of the minotaurs on the deck only need 1 black mana to be played, and our main minotaur lord, rageblood shaman, needs 2 red to be put on the field. The ideia of the deck is to get ragemonger in play, so you can pay less for your other minotaurs and stomp the opposition.if you have Rageblood shaman, kragma warcaller, and felhide petrifier in play, your worst minotaur(felhide brawler) will be a 5/3 deathtouch trampler, and that´s nothing to scoff at.Despise, or how i like to call it, poor man´s thoughtseize, is a great card on this deck, because even if your opponent doesnt have a creature on its hand, you still see it and you can act accordingly to what´s in it.Murderous cut is a great removal thanks to delve, but if you want you can always go for asphyxiate, but it´s harder to cast since it requires 2 black mana.Inferno fist for pumping out your creatures even more, lightning strike because no red deck shoud be without some direct damage, and Obelisk of urd since this is a tribal deck, so it always helps. Those who have more money could opt for some fetchlands, thoughtseizes and hero´s downfall. But for 15 bucks this is a fun deck to play nonetheless!
Hello there! Thanks for the contribution! Minotaurs is a deck I've personally been thinking about making for awhile now.
However, (and this goes to everyone.) Please use TCGplayer for prices, just to keep things uniform. It's very easy to enter stuff in. You just go to the "mass card entry" and enter in the decklist (minus basic lands) then take just the price that says "items"
Yesterday I won in FNM with the scavenger deck. But I think I want some Nylea, God of the Hunt for the trample. Because it can take several turns to beat down the opponent with just a big creature in play.
This one is a pretty straightforward Temur Midrange deck. Temur actually got some pretty sweet budget friendly midrange options in Sagu Mauler and Bear's Companion. We also run Snowhorn Rider as an extra morph (though it doesn't matter much for bluffing since both morph creatures are big scary tramplers) and an extra threat.
The plan of this deck is pretty simple, play big dudes, support them with spells. I'm not entirely sure Heir of the Wilds is good here, but I at least want to try it. Nessian Wilds Ravager is another card I want to try. It's either a really big monster or it's a removal spell.
I did consider running this deck in a more morph-heavy direction.Kheru Spellsnatcher is really tempting to play.
Kird Chieftain can fill in your missing 4 drop slot and gives you something to do with your mana in the late game. A little more aggressive build could use Fanatic of Xenagos. Probably would remove the Snowhorn Rider.
Hey guys! I'm loving the decks that you keep submitting! For anyone who's looking to submit a deck, or just looking for a deckbuilding challenge, here are a few things I'd really love to see on this thread, but am too busy to brew up myself!
A Disciple of Deceit deck. One of the cards I really love that hasn't really found any sort of home yet.
We could use a few budget control lists! I know control is hard to do on a budget, but I bet we have some budget control players here who'd be really grateful! (Myself included)
Haven't seen much in the way of Mardu on this thread! It'd be great if we could have at least one deck for each Clan, as newer players who might be on a budget might want to play around their favorite clan.
In my opinion, be best builds for those are as follows.
ub obelish of urd human inspire using disciple to make creatures go back and forth with removal and support.
15 buck control is difficult due to certain required cards and floor prices. I think bw constellation is as close as you get to reasonable controllish play but that's nothing like uw control.
Mardu has no justification unless you can hit ascendancy. I could make one but it'd be like 70% red.
Meandering towershell meets bearer of the heavens momentary reanimator.
1. Interesting, I never thought of Urd, to be honest.
2. It doesn't have to play like U/W, necessarily.
3. Yeah... Mardu. Hmmm. I always thought of maybe doing a tokens list, but again, that would probably be more R/W with some black splashed for removal.
4. That sounds... interesting, to say the least
I'll hopefully have another deck up eventually. I'm looking at doing some sort of control list, but my other idea is just to make "the morph deck" to get it over with
Mardu has no reason at all to play tokens. This is no lingering souls, gather the townsfolk, honor of the pure, intangible virtue. The token producers are not the inherently best cards and there's no tying synergy short of some very color hungry, must be fast decks. The only one is mardu ascendancy... which wants to be the only token maker or close to it. It would tolerate some of the cards that do what they do best like a certain rabblemaster which loves it but things like raise the alarm? Nope.

Mardu might be out of our budget-range, then. (But if someone wants to try, go ahead.)
I'll see what I can do about a morph deck or something like it. Need to have at least one wacky deck on here.

However, (and this goes to everyone.) Please use TCGplayer for prices, just to keep things uniform. It's very easy to enter stuff in. You just go to the "mass card entry" and enter in the decklist (minus basic lands) then take just the price that says "items"
Thanks!

Have you thought about Doomwake Giant in the side for Aggro?

Kird Chieftain can fill in your missing 4 drop slot and gives you something to do with your mana in the late game. A little more aggressive build could use Fanatic of Xenagos. Probably would remove the Snowhorn Rider.
Please note this is in NO way saying you can't submit other decks! It's just a list of things that might get someone's creative juices flowing!

ub obelish of urd human inspire using disciple to make creatures go back and forth with removal and support.

Mardu might be out of our budget-range, then. (But if someone wants to try, go ahead.)
I'll see what I can do about a morph deck or something like it. Need to have at least one wacky deck on here.
