Hey guys, I'm brewing a list for AKH Standard based around Exert and the benefits of Always Watching.
I want the creatures to be good without AW, so only the better Exert creatures make the cut, while Combat Celebrant plays a sacrificial role and can temporarily keep things ticking over in terms of combat.
Gideon wasn't banned for some reason so I guess I have to run him
Selfless Spirit makes life a lot easier, gives me an extra flier, and hands me free wins in BG matchups
The spell package is open to tweaks and suggestions on nearly every card as it's currently geared to killing Mardu Vehicles, with Flow to give me reach vs. Control. I'd really appreciate feedback here!
You might be well served to check out the "Humans" thread under the Established decks section...they are tending toward RW Exert.
Thanks, I gave that a look sadly I'm not after an Aggro deck, I would prefer something midrangier to focus on Glorybringers and Gideons while having plenty of removal for Aggro in the main and board
Glorybringer seems a bit slow for this deck. the main synergy is Initiate and Celebrant. the glorybringer seems a bit late for the party, yes? ideally you want to exert the Celebrant on turn 4, so imho the celebrant should be the top of your creature mana curve.
I'd cut the dragon and go with 4 Soul-Scar Mage to help weaken the various indestructible creatures with your damage spells and have an early game threat.
I'd also add 4 Insult/Injury as the turn 4 play when you exert with the Celebrant. two combat phases with double damage for each attack should win you games.
I've been running a list almost exactly like this, except I put the spirits on the sideboard and instead have Bloodlust Inciter on the main. If he doesn't get removed he makes everything else a much bigger nightmare, including gideon. Also have 2 thalia on the main, helps crew the hearts i also run. I also think Cast Out with its cycling ability is very much needed here.
I haven't been able to get any testing done with it yet, but I think it could do good things. I slanted it more towards aggro in the main, and you can board into a more mid-range style deck for when speed just won't get you there.
Question, if you don't have to tap a creature to attack (Vigilance) do you still tap it for exert? Or does exert become basically a free added effect at that point?
Yes, it's a free effect at that point. Exert states the creature does not untap on your next untap step, but nowhere does it state you have to tap the creature. So ya, shove some Always Watching in a deck and have fun. And you can exert twice in the same turn if you use Combat Celebrant to get a second attack step.

Thanks for answering. That's a huge help. I also noticed that Combat Celebrant isn't legendary. So that means I can have two on the board and hit my opponent with 3 attack phases in a single turn! That's gonna leave a mark.
