Really? Wrath over Gideon, Elspeth, Moat, Catastrophe and Swords?
I was in a bit of a hurry, but still I'd pick it over Moat and Catastrophe, and probably over Gideon and Elspeth. All fantastic cards mind, but the Wrath is just great at not losing the game, and it's pretty cheap. I'll worry about winning later.
I'm a bit bummed that Swords is gone already, but there you have it.
I like the *** pick. In his situation I might have done the same. It's also voted as the 4th best white card in the 2010 power rankings.
Fair enough. I don' think that those power ranking are perfect (in fact, my strategy has been aroudn taking cards that I think the power rankings are wrong about, thus giving me a better deck while other drafters take higher ranked cards).
Wrath has an effect that is duplicated by about 6 other cards. I think that he would have been much better off taking a card with a unique effect that by the time he gets aroudn to drafting it may have been taken by another drafter.
For me, it appears that I am competing with Arven and bondafong for the cards I want. That's ok. there are enough awesome cards in here for all 3 of us to have great decks.
Damn you! That means it's time to go back to the drawing board for me.
Yeah. that and Tangle Wire I suspect were key for you, amiright?
@Arven. There's already 3 people in black so you should probably stay away from it anyways.
I think that the risk of other people taking cards that you want is a fundamental feature of drafting.
Or, if it does work, CAN EVERYONE PLEASE STOP TAKING ARTIFACTS? I have clearly bags'd them.
I am a little peeved I didn't pick Winter Orb a bit earlier, it was pretty high on my wishlist. I didn't expect it to be so highly valued. On the other hand, I'm glad I'm not trying to fight over the black or blue.
I'd be interested to hear MrDumpkin's thoughts post-draft as well, as he's made some choices I don't think I would have.
I'll let you guys know everything once it's over.

O rly? You started with Black Lotus and Mox Ruby, how are those 'cards that the power rankings are wrong about'? The other cards you picked are regarded pretty highly as well, so honestly I don't really see what you're going on about.
About Wrath, there are other cards that do the same, but none as efficiently. You first-picked Black Lotus - why do that, there are tons of signets to pick later, right?

I started off with Lotus as the best card available. Then I took Mox Ruby and Tangle Wire since I had visions of being a red aggro player. With the benefit of 5th pick hindsight I would have picked different cards P2 and P3. I abandoned red aggro with the Fireblast pick (since I don't see two red aggro decks being awesome at the table), and have moved into blue since it is underdrafted at this stage. I'm being reactive to what other people are taking and the decks I think they are trying to build.
Also, Wraths suffer from Diminishing returns in a way that fast mana just.... doesn't. You don't want a deck with Wrath, DoJ, Vengeance, Rout, Martial Coup. Whereas if I was forced to take 5 moxen with my first 5 picks while everyone else took 'power' cards, I'd be ok with that. There is far less powered acceleration going around than drafters who want them, so they are in demand. There will be some white wrath variants which go undrafted, making drafting one highly seem.... really good for me?
In my defense, Upheaval >>>>> Force of Will, so the reason you don't have Upheaval is because you didn't draft it when you had the opportunity :~)

Hehe, well I'm quite happy with my Force of Will so don't worry about it!
About your picks, please understand I totally wasn't critisizing them. I just didn't get what you meant by saying your strategy was to draft cards that were underrated.
I also agree about fast mana being more important than mass removal. It's why I took the Mox first, then Balance, then Wrath. Since I already had the most efficient mass removal, I thought I'd stake a claim on blue by taking an obviously blue card with a quite unique effect. I rate it higher than Upheaval because, however strong the latter is, it's still only a way to finish the game, which just isn't that important early on in the draft. A free counter however...
Except for the value of efficient mass removal and free counters, I guess we're pretty much on the same wavelength here.
Yeah, I think so. Force of Will is a card that is pretty terrible (by cube standards) if you have hardly any blue, but becomes more and more powerful the more blue cards you have in your deck (only really insane with 16+ blue cards).
Just out of interest, how many blue cards do you think you will end up drafting? Because I see you, me, Arven, MrDumpkins and bondafong all drafting blue, and there are only 50 blue cards available (10 each on average if the whole colour is completely drafted).

That's why I was a bit miffed that you moved into blue right after my Force of Will pick.
There was really only Bonda that was very blue when I picked it, as MrDumpkins was obviously going for a mainly red build with his 2nd pick Fireblast.
But still, an entire cube can still support 3 to 4 blue players, no problem. I'd have been amazed if there were only 2. So I'm not worried at all about where this draft is going for me!
Some initial advice would be that while yawg's bargain remains in the cube I would probably never, ever, EVER pick arena.
My 2 cents.
Also, no necropotence in this cube?
Oops.
My eyes kind of missed that one. I guess I figured with the Sword, I would be more aggro and thus would have a lower curve. But I probably should've taken that.

Elspeth is great, but in some decks not losing is more important then winning. Winning is eas when you made sure you cannot lose first;)
Some decks just need Wraths, otherwise they have a hard time defending against aggro. Often Elspeth can be replaced with another finisher.
I feel compelled to repeat everything I hear

Exactly. All the best artifacts are secretly blue.
Tolarian Academy, Academy Ruins... artifacts love their blue Hell, even shackles and crystal shard love their blue.
