Realistically speaking, flashback could... flash back... much like scry did. It's fairly simple and applicable in many colors, so I'd almost expect it at some point. However it wouldn't hang around, so you can't put it on any "staples" you'd want to keep reprinting.
They brought back Flanking and Echo in Timespiral block so I guess it's possible to see Flashback make a return at some point in a core set which is a much more popular ability.
Banding is pretty much a horrible, horrible ability. It does two completely different things on attack and defense. I struggle to remember how to play it even having grown up with the banding cards. Luckily none of the the cards with it are cubeable

All of this. Banding is like the Tron of M:TG. The only reason it is remembered fondly is because it is not clealry remembered.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.

I always thought it was a really cool ability. The ability to assign 2 damage to your 3/3, 1 damage to your 2/2, and 4 damage to your 5/5 and have everything survive is pretty sweet.

Me too. If they had printed an actual good cube worthy creature with banding I think everyone would have learned how it worked properly to include it.
It was my understanding that core sets never had multicoloured cards in them. Then again, that could be what's special for M12, like scry was special in M11, and new cards were special in M10.
There's never been multicolored cards in a core set (unless you could Chronicles as part of 4E).
They could be bringing back hybrid. They seem to have realized that stuff like Legends (10e) and Planeswalkers (M10) aren't too hard for the noobs that aren't buying the core set anyway.
gold will show up before hybrid. hybrid is a bit weirder and harder to understand. i don't think it's too hard to understand to put into a core set, but it's not showing up before hybrid.

the problem is not that the ability is inherently too weak. it's that it's unnecessarily complicated.

I agree. I really think the problem was the decision to make it work on offense.
Ya, it only works during your own declare attackers step now, right?
Eh? I thought banding still worked on defense to be able to order the damage. Right now, the damage order to blockers is assigned by the attacker (without banding on either side). A band on defense would let the defender assign damage received how he would like. A band on offence would allow the attacker to assign damage received (from defenders) how he would like.
At least that's how I remember it. It's not a particularly useful ability, since it's only pseudo-evasion and only directly helps you when you have creatures taking damage.
EDIT: So OK, I just looked at Benalish Hero. You only really form a band when you attack, but the effect still happens when you're multi-blocking an attacking creature and one of those blockers has banding. You'll choose the damage assignment regardless of the damage assignment order of the attacking player.
I'm pretty sure it's been changed so that it only works when attacking now. I saw them on MTGO drafting, and it didn't prompt banding for defense. Only when attacking. But I don't know for sure.

See my edit above. It looks like the rules just account for it when you block using a creature for banding, and you don't actually form a 'band' to block.
Yea, you never formed a band when you blocked. As long as one creature with banding was among the creatures that blocked an attacker, you chose how to distribute the damage.
Something like that. It became more tuned with time, then became worse when I started adding bad Fallen Empires cards in (like Icatian Moneychanger. Those are good memories...
Actually banding got really bad with the m10 rules changes. Lets try to see how this would go:
You got a 2/2 banding and a 3/3 attacking as a band and your opponent has a 3/3 that he declares as a blocker. You can't put 2 damage on the 3/3 and 1 damage on the 2/2 to make the whole band survive since the m10 rules tell that you must assign lethal damage before you can go on to assign to another creature. What would happen is you could assign 2 damage on the 2/2 and 1 on the 3/3 and have the 3/3 survive. Either way, banding got really bad with the m10 rules.
Man, I wish they'll print some nice aggro common creatures this time.

Do you know what's already been in a core set?
Banding!
It's hard to say that it'll never ever be in a core set when it already has been. I do agree that it'll never be in a core set again.
This my friend is a 5th edition Benalish Hero. They simply didn't use reminder text back then.

Looks like we have the new Jace art for M2012.
I can't wait for M12. The core sets have been my favorite additions to the game since they started printing new cards in M10.

Actually I bet I could reproduce my first deck from memory:
2 Mesa Pegasus
2 Gray Ogre
2 Pearled Unicorn
2 Hill Giant
2 Serra Angel
2 Lightning Bolt
2 Fireball
2 Disintegrate
2 Swords to Plowshares
1 Clockwork Beast
3 Disenchant
2 Plateau
2 Sol Ring
2 Basalt Monolith
2 Mana Vault
4 Mountain
4 Plains
Something like that. It became more tuned with time, then became worse when I started adding bad Fallen Empires cards in (like Icatian Moneychanger. Those are good memories...
And yah, banding was confusing as hell.
I'd prefer she had slender legs lol
