I think Bloodgift Deamon is playable, though black has gotten a lot better at the 5-6 drop territory. Graveborn Muse with evasion (and out of blot range) should be worth one more mana.
The Wreath artwork is cool, and the Moan artwork is great. I just hope the set as a whole doesn't have art as digitized as this. The art on the Cultist looks like it came out of a bad Diablo cinema scene, and doesn't appear to belong on a Magic card at all.

I really agree with this. We need more abstract magic art and simplistic fantasy art. I don't like the very polished art that started with the new frame.
I love how the old sets used a divers paint range/scheme, and yet the set identity didn't suffer at all. You had Tedin, Guay, RKF and Spencer all painting for the same set, and it still looked like it belonged together. Gone are the days of beautiful hand-painted cards with a diverse group of artists with their own takes at the "feel" of the set in question. Now everything's going to be airbrushed, altered and/or digital, and the art throughout the entire set is too streamlined.
That's just the way painting has evolved though, I'm no art major or anything, but using a paint program seems to make it a lot easier to create and fine tune art, meaning it's possible to take on more commissions, and then make more money.

While I don't like the overly "digital" look of some newer cards, the overall quality of Magic card art has greatly improved since the beginning. Before Tempest block, most of the art was just bad (with Ron Spencer, Richard Kane Ferguson and a few others being the exception). Since Tempest, the style of the sets has a much more coherent feel and aren't a wild mishmash of completely different styles and ideas anymore.
I agree with the concerns about the digital homogeneity of the art on display here. I am not opposed to digital art, but would welcome a mix of media and styles. A gothic-themed set, as this appears to be, would really benefit from some interesting art choices: I'd like to see woodcuts, but I'm not holding my breath.

I think the issue is that art doesn't sell cards, so cheaper is better, in their eyes.
This is not true. They know how important the art is. That is why they spend so much work developing the visual feel of plane and its inhabitants, give artists a much more extensive art description (no Hyalopterous Lemure anymore), have increased the size which the picture gets on each card, are actively trying to get the best artists they can get, etc.
I like the modern art - Shards and Zen block were both cracking artwise - but I love the organic styles of RKF, Guay, Nielsen etc. I wish for more of that style in the next blocks as diversity is always welcome.
For me, Art play a BIG part whether or not I would start playing a card game. I don't like Vanguard art, so I don't play Vanguard. I like Victory Spark/Weiss Schwarz art, so I play them. Same goes for Magic the Gathering and Summoner Master.

They have said from time to time that this is the opposite of the truth. There market research has shown that the main reason that people get into the game is "because the art was cool".
