I'm probably in the vast minority when I say I like revised basic lands. I think the white border looks good with the rest of the card, and I like the angled "T" for the tap symbol.
But, my friends are complaining that they're too hard to distinguish from one another, so I'm getting some Zendikar basics soon.
You could also get beta-lands. The colors are much more destinct on those that on the revised ones.

Are you going with matching beta basics? Do you mind if Alpha gets mixed in? Are you only grabbing Minty beta basics?
To me I like the idea of played beta cards. When you see them you know that they were played when the game first came out and it gives them so much more of a history.

I'm mixing A/B using the same art on all (which limits me as Alpha only had two arts per land). I'm looking for decent condition ones thought mintness is not required.
Even though I like foil cards, for some reason I dislike using foil basics in my Cube. Each one of my basic land arts is different. I understand the "disadvantage" of it from a gameplay perspective, but like others I prefer the aesthetics of having different arts.

You and I would get along. One of my friends complained that lands look too much alike.
I've caught word that Zendikar is now out of, or is about to be out of print, though, so I might as well pick up as many Zendikar basics as I possibly can before they go up. I doubt they'll ever reach Un-basic prices, but they might go for a dollar or so a piece in a year.

If I were to do this, I would try to get ahold of one of each basic land from every expansion + any new arts in core sets. I think that would be a worth wild endeavor.

That's my ideal goal, and that will be more than enough lands, hehe. Right now I'm a tad short (about 24-25 per color). But the maximum amount I would have would be...
Mirrodin x 4
Kamigawa x 4
Ravnica x 4
Time Spiral x 4
Lorwyn x 4
Shadowmoor x 4
Alara x 4
Zendikar x 4 (I'm in the minority that prefers the non full-art lands so they match the rest of the lands)
Rise of the Eldrazi x 4
Scars x 4.
That's 40 right there. Coldsnap Theme Decks have Ice Age lands, so that's 3 more arts for each color. Core Sets, Duel Decks, Archenemy, etc. have some unique land arts too (some colors have more duplicates than others).
Of course, people without the same card face restriction as me would have about twice as many to choose from.
I had the idea to use basic energies from Pokemon as basic lands.
Does this particularly bother anyone?
I can't decide between Lightning or Metal for white, I'd use Water for blue. I'm between Psychic (because purple's pretty) and Darkness for black. Fire energies for red, and Grass energies for green.
I'd got for Darkness and Lightning. Metal looks too much like black for my liking.
ps, I think using pokemon energies is actually really cool. Can you get them in foil? ;3
You can get foil energies, but they're exceptionally rare. It's not worth my trouble, as I doubt most 'local' pokemon players have enough for their own decks, much less 25 they want to get rid of for each type.
Pokemon energies is a neat idea. I don't think it's something that'd go over well with my crew and I don't think I'd want that for my cube, but it's definitely original.
I did all different arts for my lands in my C/U cube, but I left out lands with the new card face. For some reason new card face lands still don't feel/look right to me. The only exceptions I made were Unhinged lands and full art Zendikar lands.
I wonder why they didn't continue the full art land trend with Scars.

Yeah. Zendikar was a "land matters" set, so they made the basic lands look cool.
That's understandable, but IMO, basic lands should always look cool. Basic land is such a simple card that the card layout doesn't have to match the rest of the cards in the set. Why not make the land look awesome instead of just plain and boring?

I agree, but if it's a rarity, then it's a way for them to push more product.

The problem is that if you make them all full art, then that becomes the standard and thus boring. They have to not do it often to keep it amazing.

That makes sense, but I'd be absolutely fine if the norm for lands was full art. That was my point. I'm not saying I wish all of the basics were awesome. I'm saying I wish they were all full art. If it becomes less awesome because they're so many of them, I'm fine with that. It'll still be more awesome than the current norm.
I wonder if there are enough old bordered sets to have 40 unique basic lands of each type (not counting those with T: Add ...)
4x Urza
4x Masques
4x Invasion
4x odyssey
4x onslaught
3x eurolands
4x portal
3x portal second age
total 30 unique lands
Well you are also missing
1x Guru
3x P3K basics (sharpie in the borders)
4x 6th basics (I'm not sure if they are repeats of other lands you could get, also sharpie in the borders)
4x 7th basics (same problem as 6th)
There is a beta island picture used in beatdown. So it might be doable to get 36-38 basics if you mind sharpieing in borders. I believe you can use a magic eraser to remove the "shine" from the sharpie but the "shine" has never bothered me.
