What's the best way for a cube noob to start putting his cube together? Any pointers/resources for a beginner? I've been playing the game since inception and have amassed quite the collection, most of which is just sitting in a box, so I figured I'd try to put them to use. Budget not an issue.
Thanks in advance!
I'd browse through some cube content and see what interests you. Look at lists, read articles and see if there are any cube design philosophies out there that mesh with the environment you'd want to create for yourself. Find a few cubes you like, and throw something together that's a Frankensteined version of those lists meshed with some crowd favorites for your playgroup.
Have fun, and aim to create something that you and your playgroup will enjoy, regardless of what other folks out there are doing.
If a mod wants to delete this, I understand. It probably belongs more so in the cube list forum. But I felt this was different enough where I might be able to get away with a post here.
I have spent a stupid amount of time on this project, and would be thrilled if you fine people could take a look. At some point I might do an article style write up of this that talks some about the design and development history of this project. But now is not that time. I still have way too much play testing to do.
Anyways, this is my Bohemian cube. A beta-themed proxy cube that attempts to blend the modern with the old in order to create an experience that resembles the beginning years of Magic while updating them to the sensibilities a modern magic player.
I'm sure there are cards that are too strong, too weak, too "modern" and too old. I'm sure not everyone will like each piece of art (which is kind of the point), and I'm sure some people will find the experience of reading old syntax with new art too confusing. But still any direct feedback you could give on your impression of this would be amazing. Especially if you find any typo's or anything in
correct about any of these cards. (Earlier today I noticed I forgot to make sure that the cycling lands etb tapped.)
I've looked through the art and the theme and it is absolutely amazing. I absolutely love the alters and the oracle text like "All creatures are destroyed".
I'm working on a big overhaul of my cube and I want to make room for signets and some other artifacts. Do you think that Karn Liberated is necessary in a powered 450? I've still got Ugin and new Karn.
I cut Karn Liberated at ~400ish and don't miss it. Ugin is just so much better in this format, and I never felt the need for a second planeswalker super fatty. I buylisted it at its peak, got some OG shocks, and never regretted it.

Draft my cube: Eric's 390 Unpowered
What are the pros and cons of going from a 450 card cube to a 465? This would allow me to just add signets and some more lands/colorless cards. Cutting three cards from each color is brutal, so going up to 465 has begun to seem attractive. My cube is normally drafted with 6-8 people and doesn't get drafted very frequently any more (working on changing that).
It won't matter all that much, but adding in 10 mana-fixing rocks without really increasing any card density might increase the likelihood of 4-5 color goodstuff decks showing up in the draft.
So it's been years since I've had a traditional cube. Been looking through other people's lists and I've decided to put together a new list and proxy it out. Things that I've noticed.
1. The amount of creatures that are just vanilla or french vanilla creatures once they hit the board is pretty high. In an effort to get value out of every creature immediately once it hits the field I think we have sacrifice more interesting board states. This isn't a negative, just an observation. But one that I want to try to account for by making an effort to include more creatures that have global and activated abilities on the field. More Brightlings and Benalish Marshals.
2. White is in a situation that red was in years ago. Everything in the color is either a dude or removal. I need to look for more cards that make more interesting deck building choices. Like opposition, recurring nightmare, sneak attack or birthing pod.
3. It's always interesting after a hiatus to see what cards you once thought were 100% cube staples that you don't see in lists. Serendib Efreet was about as much of a staple as a cube could have but I see it not be used in lists from people I respect the opinion on. There are other such cards but that was the first one that really stood out to me.
4. Conversely I'm amazed at the cards that I've never felt were that good that are still in people's list. I've never liked Flickerwisp but yet it's still being played in good numbers. Glad to see Faith's Fetters finally kick the bucket.

Calvin and Hobbes Cube Tutor
1. If you build the cube so that a true WW deck is supported, Benalish Marshal could certainly be a powerhouse. I tried Brightling in my low power list for a while and, honestly, as cool as it looks on paper, it was pretty underwhelming. It was a fine mana sink when you literally had nothing else left to do, but for WW decks it was a bit too mana intensive for the payoff and non aggressive decks just didn't want it. I would rather have decent creatures with solid static abilities like Kinjalli's Sunwing. A 2/3 flyer for three is pretty french vanilla, but the static pseudo-Kismet makes it pretty annoying to play against.
2. Unfortunately, I just don't think we've gotten that sort of card for white yet. Citadel Siege is a fun card, but it's nowhere near the power level it seems you're looking for. Parallax Wave is cool too, but again probably not the build around you're looking for.
3. Serendib Efreet specifically probably just fell out of favor for being a mostly uninteresting creature. It was easy to answer and didn't really have a deck that wanted it outside of a generic midrange list. A three mana 3/4 flyer is fine, but it's also super boring. My control decks didn't want it and my midrange decks would rather have a second Man-o'-War or even a Whirler Rogue. I do still run him in my low power list, for what it's worth.
4. Man, Flickerwisp just does so much. A random blink can clear a blocker to get in damage, it can blink for value ETB effects, or it can kill a token. I've gotten a ton of value out of Flickerwisp over the years. It's not the best white three drop, but I still think it's pretty damn good.
I fell out of maintaining my cube years ago when I moved overseas, but I'm getting the itch to get back into it.
A few questions, first I was here when the mtgo cube first came out and I remember there being lot's of "controversy" about how drastically it differed from consensus here on which archetypes to support. Now that we've had years of storm being popular in vintage cube on modo where do you guys stand on storm in powered cubes? What about channel style ramp as opposed to traditional ramp?
With creatures and planeswalkers continually improving do you feel your cubes have gotten more aggressive over the past 3ish years? Is it still necessary to force aggro support by including underwhelming on curve beaters?
How many archtypes do you feel a 360 or 450 can support in a given color? I want to support reanimator, storm, and stax in black and worry that will leave black too thin to also support aggro and midrange.
where do you guys stand on storm in powered cubes?
In my experience storm is a beloved archetype, but it can also be a bit of a trap. I have a "storm package" that I throw in sometimes when we manage to get eight drafters (any less than eight and it's near impossible to get enough cards in the pool for storm to be remotely viable). Even with the full eight drafters and 360 cards (sometimes 375 due to Lore Seeker), it's still a hell of a challenge to put together a truly viable storm deck. This goes double if there's even one more person at the table who's also in your archetype. I'll add that my storm package is currently at 24 cards and honestly, even that feels like not enough. Storm is so parasitic that outside of basic blue cantrips and black tutors, it's hard to find cards that fit into storm that also fit into other archetypes you want to run.
What about channel style ramp as opposed to traditional ramp?
I don't view "Channel Style Ramp" as an archetype. There's just ramp and sometimes you get a sweet opener and a free win from Channel. I understand what you mean by feeling that you need to prioritize colorless ramp targets over the Woodfall Primuses and Atarkas of the world if you have Channel in your pool. I get that, but mostly ramp decks like that tend to just play out on their own. There's not much opportunity cost to including Channel in your ramp deck, even if you only managed to pick up one or two great uses for it. Even if you get one Eldrazi and a Gilded Lotus, that's probably worth it to include Channel in your ramp deck.
With creatures and planeswalkers continually improving do you feel your cubes have gotten more aggressive over the past 3ish years? Is it still necessary to force aggro support by including underwhelming on curve beaters?
Yes and no. It is still important to make sure you have enough aggro support if you want that deck to be viable at all. But aggro beaters have continued to get better and better over the past few years. White has gotten a ton of great one drops and even some really good two drops. Green has had a bit of a boost of aggressive support. Black has gotten several recursive two power one drops. Red is, surprisingly, the aggro color that could still use some help in the aggressive one drop section, despite it being arguably the most aggressive color, but it has gotten a few great two drops. But for the most part, WotC has been very nice to aggro decks in cubes over the past few years.
How many archetypes do you feel a 360 or 450 can support in a given color? I want to support reanimator, storm, and stax in black and worry that will leave black too thin to also support aggro and midrange.
It's not impossible to have support for all of these archetypes in black, but you may have to sacrifice some the more generically good cards in favor of archetype specific support. Try to include cards that can help support multiple archetypes. You may have to make some really hard choices at 360, but at 450 you can probably make it work. One good thing about black aggressive strategies is that most of the best black aggro cards also fit nicely into the Stax archetype because of their recursive nature.
Calibretto wrote pretty much everything I was going to say, except that I don't run Storm because even at 450 I think it takes up too much room and the deck is difficult to draft. Additionally, I'm almost never drafting with more than 6, so that makes it even more difficult.
I had definitely considered the big eldrazi a necessity for channel. I was thinking a 2 mana discount (and needing GGGG) for Primeval Titan or a 3 mana discount for woodfall (and 5 G) wasn't that exciting, but the colorless Karn, Wurmcoil, Battlesphere, and gilded lotus does sound like enough on closer thought. Which is good because I didn't enjoy Emrakul in the cube last time around.
Anyone got maybe 3-5 spare Cubeamajigs you'd sell me? I don't want to buy a whole pack, but I'm a few packs short of having my whole cube in packs of 15.

I like them pretty well so far. They're not going to last forever, but for $25, they give a little extra coating of durability and make the beginning of a draft very easy.

This used to be a pauper cube. I'm dropping commons only to play better cards. For example, I like Splice Onto Arcane but there aren't many good ones at common, so playing rare or uncommon Arcane cards allowed me to cut some of the unplayable arcane cards and replace them with playable ones. Pauper doesn't really have any big mana creature payoffs beyond Ulamog's Crusher either.
What are some good cards that scale with power level? I'm not looking for bombs really. Symmetrical effects like wraths seem fine. Shahrazad seems fine with a bunch of Pauper creatures.
Does anyone else here have an unpowered all rarities cube, or is it mostly powered cubes?
I like to play fun, fair, interactive Magic as my Lord and Savior Richard Garfield intended. So I have a Splice Onto Arcane theme, Banding theme, and I play some of the big ramp targets like Darksteel Colossus or Worldspine Wurm with few, if any ways to cheat them out. I even have Dark Depths with no Vampire Hexmage. If you want to play Worldspine Wurm without 11 lands on the field, you'll have to draft mana batteries or storage lands or Tron or 6post to assist.
Am I the only one that has built a cube like this? I guess I'm going for a sort of Pee-Wee's Playhouse of interesting cards. I'm looking for some input on Mycosynth Golem and Moxes in a similar environment.
In constructed I can definitely see why the Moxes are in the power 9. In limited however having one or two in a deck isn't really a substantial improvement over having basics or cards like Llanowar Elves or Sol Ring (Which is the best mox).
And Mycosynth Golem I kind of want some input on before I buy one. I don't want the artifact deck in my cube to get super OP but at the same time I want my foil seventh edition Phyrexian Hulk to see as much play as possible and if it had Affinity that would help a bunch. Does it become too easy to slam Darksteel or Blightsteel with this?
There are lots of people on this forum that manage unpowered cubes, including several with intentionally lower powerlevels. I'm sure you can find folks that like to discuss your particular brand of limited.

Gotta say though, this is simply untrue. Moxes are insanely powerful in limited. Sol Ring is godly too, obviously, but ABU Moxen are disgustingly good. They're not so good they can't be beaten (few things are, really) but they're up there.

I ask about unpowered cubes because my playgroup will sperg out if they see Banding cards, Bronze Tablet, or a card like Dash Hopes in my cube.
Yesterday my douche friend saw me sharpie'ing off "pro Red & White" from Sword of War and Peace and said, "Yeah, I'm never drafting your cube ever again, protection is just fine."
So I just assumed that no one has built a cube like mine and that everyone has that same attitude as my douche friend. Online interactions with other cubers are often the same. The cards I genuinely enjoy the most are what everyone else hates the most.
There is nothing a Magic player would hate more than opening a pack with Kjeldoran Skycaptain and One with Nothing in it or seeing an Umezawa's Jitte with the pump and removal modes blacked out. Or actually having to play Dark Depths as intended.
Are they though? Is playing a two drop on turn 2 occasionally really that back breaking?
I drafted the MTGO Vintage cube last night with friends and I got a Mox Sapphire. When I could play Land -> Mox -> Sol Ring -> Signet on turn one it was ******* stupid, but otherwise it seemed fine.
