My friends and I wanna get started in cubing, but we're pretty much dirt poor (the high school life). Peasant cubing might be an option, but playing without rares seems kinda lonely. Does anyone know some cheaper lists? This means like no shock lands, no titans, and hopefully some easy to obtain cards (no alpha etc.) Thanks so much!
Just throw something together from what you have and then slowly upgrade according to your budget. That's what I did when I started cubing and even underpowered / suboptimal cubes are an absolute blast to play and will get you hooked very quickly.
Thanks for the help guys! I've decided to start with Adam Styborski's cube and go from there. Since they're all commons, maybe it would be fine to play without card sleeves... those darn things are worth more than some of the cards...

You do not want to shuffle an entire cube, regardless of value, without sleeves. The cards will get all marked up and it won't be a good shuffle anyway.

Wait, really? IIRC, a pack of Dragon Shields is 10$ for 100, or aprox 0.10 per sleeve. Common cubes are hardly my area of expertise, but still.
It will be worth it eventually, if only for the ease of shuffling and storage. Just keep that in mind
There are definitely cheap sleeve options available, with some diligent sleuthing. Some guy rolled up to our cube group recently with decent-enough looking sleeves he had purchased, 50 for a dollar, at some back water lgs.
Here are a few suggestions (some were already suggested before but here it is:
1. Have a Pauper Cube
What I like about pauper is that there are no moments when you feel you are beaten by a singe bomby card. Most pauper cards are fair and designed to be balanced for drafting. Pauper games are deceptively challenging. The cards you have will gain you incremental advanatage so you have to play skillfully to maximize them.
2. Do with what you have.
I started with this. If you have existing decks, just put in everything, put in the common and uncommon staples and you have a cube! Look into the cube comparison thread for the list of cheap staples (Most notable is Balance) so you can aim for those. Instead of Shocklands, use Painlands and Scars lands for aggro combinations, and use Rav Karoos, Tri Lands or Filterlands for slower archtypes.
3. Make an theme cube.
Spike cards are naturally expensive because of the demand. But try building a themed cube; what you will be needing are archtype specific cards instead. For example, in a tribal cube, you will be in need of changelings and tribal lords such as Elvish Champion or Goblin King, which are easier to acquire. Examples of themed cubes are: Artifact Cube, Tribal, Snow, Multicolor, Graveyard.
4. Build it off a block.
Limit yourself to the design and cards off a block. This is ideal if your playgroup just played standard and you have a lot of cards from a specific block. Popular block cubes include: Lorwyn, Mirrodin, RoE, Ravnica.

You 100% need sleeves, even just spending like $5-10 on penny sleeves makes universes of difference.

I write about cube and run cube drafts on magic online.
Ya I have two pauper cubes, the Styborski cube, which is awesome I must add, and I also made a pauper cube based on the two ravnica blocks called "ravnica united" they are both super fun, and you never worry about someone stealing your cards. Sitting down and drafting with strangers was never so care-free lol!
Always sleeve your cubes!!

Haha. This is silly and just plain wrong. High powered cube drafts are the opposite of EDH. The games are quick, powerful and streamlined.

Good luck and happy cubing!
