Hello fellow wizards, I have been wanting to do something like this for awhile. And with having the day off I figured why not start today?
We are going to do a group Quilt draft with my cube seen here. What is a group cube draft? I'm glad you asked. You should probably look at the rules before you post.
An 8x10 "quilt" is laid out face down. With every other card being flipped 90 degrees.
The cards with the "Narrow" edge exposed are flipped face up.
Players take turns picking cards from the quilt. A player may select any card with the Narrow edge of the card revealed.
After a player has taken a card all cards that touch that card (including those caddycorner) are flipped face up.
This continues until each player has selected 18 cards. At which point a second quilt is made. The player who went second for the first quilt now goes first.
Players construct a 40 card deck with the cards drafted.
We will take alternating turns being both drafters here. Starting with player A.
Mana fixing seems to be at a premium in a 2 player draft, since we're likely to end up in 3 colors, cultivate seems like a safe pick. Hope to grab either caratid or lotus cobra later too.
I thought we were supposed to be able to see the entire quilt from the start. That way, you see which cards you're making available and can factor that into your choices.

I'm going to branch out from the early posters. Pick 1 I take Sensei's Divining Top which is IMHO one of the best cards in a cube for 1 v 1. I can live without Karn (although some of you may think that's blasphemy). I can't live without Top in that opening. It fixes and adjusts everything whereas Karn is a card you may never live long enough to play. Pringles also runs an unpowered pool so you know Karn needs mana ramp to reach midgame status. An aggro/midrange deck can always use Top whereas Karn forces you to go into a later game strategy. Let's keep ourselves flexible and efficient. Not taking a beating on the power level either.

I mean, hell, we're all on a forum for something that most people would describe as a "children's card game"...do what makes you happy. You are never too old to enjoy yourself.
Green ramp looks to be the strongest archtype on the revealed board. One good thing to ramp into with Karn and three decent ramp spells/dudes with Cultivate, Sylvan, and Lotus Cobra. Karn becomes less good without good mana acceleration, I think we are safe grabbing ramp first. If we take Karn first, green ramp still looks the strongest on the board to me. We could end up with Karn dead in our sideboard or fighting it out for the scraps of ramp. If we take ramp first, we run the risk of him taking Karn, but we'd be guaranteed to get the best two pieces of ramp. There will be other things to ramp into /if/ the other player would decide to take Karn as his first.
I think I'd actually take the Sylvan Caryatid before the cobra if it was just me, but to not dilute the 'first pick the ramp' school of thought, I'll throw in with DerBK and go with Lotus Cobra.
It's very tough to pass Karn Liberated...especially this early. Maybe one of the cards we'll flip will be in another archetype to put our opponent in. We can still be green ramp by snagging a Cultivate even if the opponent picks the Lotus Cobra. We could even put our opponent in green ramp and have several other colors open to whatever gets flipped.
Hey! Pringlesman! Buddy, pal! You're the other seat, I presume, since the alternative is the forum community picking against itself and that doesn't seem like it would work well.
Time to turn off one side of the brain and see if I can look at this without thinking what I want to come around to me when we pick for A next.
Our opponent pick up some green ramp.
Nothing is just screaming "pick me" right now.
We could risk being called 'meta' and make the assumption picking ramp means they want stuff to ramp into. Running on that assumption we could hate Karn.
I like the black we see, but it's nothing overwhelming. I could see working red/black, work toward that Vampiric Tutor, but we'd have to go through a few dead picks.
I think the option I like the best is leaving ourselves open to going any direction once a little more is revealed next pick. I'd pick Sensei's Divining Top.
I would go KArn, simply because I know I can get one of the good ramper cards afterwards, and Karn can go into 2 of the archetypes solidly.
The top is great don't get my wrong, but it is great bait to get the next bit of ramp, depending on what is flipped next.
My final point is that there is some good cards for control floating about, so you can switch your game plan if you have to.
Edit i wanted to say i had thought that we would be given some more time to pick!!!
But I keep KArn for this
2nd Edit: Pringles, thank you for doing this, as it is nice to try this draft format and have feedback to understand better how to do it correctly!
I really like the hidden information as well!
How many cards did you lay out initially?
And we basically are going to quilt 3 times, for 54 cards? and build down to 40 or?
I'm pretty sure I stake my claim to the red aggressive deck with Stromkirk Noble here. This opens up the Hero for our next pick, plus there's Zozu and Wheel out there that we could snap up later. I'm assuming our opponent will be picking up either Cultivate or Karn with their next pick, so I'm planning on an aggressive deck to punish that strategy.

As much as hate-drafting Karn or going with top makes sense, your justification of Stromkirk Noble has my approval. We got 4 pieces of the puzzle there. That's a 1 drop in SN, into a 3 drop, reloading 3 drop, and finisher 4 drop. Fetchland to boot. Yes, yes, yes!

Sorry, I just can't pass a Karn.
The other cards that caught my eye were Toxic Deluge, Cultivate, Zo-Zu and Enclave Cryptologist. But there's a Karn in the quilt, so...

Karn is a great first pick. Colorless and very powerful in most cubes, also there are great 2nd picks after him.
Edit: pretty sick to run a forum quilt draft, Pringles!
