I recently made a bog standard ISD/ISD/ISD cube with exactly 4/2/1/1 of every card in the set, because I started Magic around then but never got to draft it. I keep hearing that there are a few undraftables and a few archetypes that need help, but I never played the format when it was out so I don't know what's bad. Any suggestions on cuts/adds to a generic 3xISD list?
I think 3x innistrad is one of the absolute best draft environments out there; probably only eclipsed by rise of the eldrzi and modern masters 1. I think the only real debate out there is whether folks prefer 3x INN or DKA/INN/INN.
Folks in my group that prefer the dark ascension version just miss a few of the trbal lords. So if you want to spruce up your sim a little bit, maybe just try out a few cards like that. Or if you really want the spider spawning or burning vengeance archetypes to come together, you can maybe up your quantities of those to 3 or 4x.
They really do swing games, which is why I've cut them from all of my sims. I thought that sarkhan the mad would have been ok in my rise sim (he's not that powerful, right?), but I watched the player using him toss the opponent around like a rag doll. It was pathetic.
I've you've got a LotV, and no where else to put it, it should be fine. But keep an eye on the win % of decks that use her,in case she is warping the cube session.
Garruk Relentless and Sorin, LoI (if you add dark ascension) are the ones to watch, i'd say.
Lingering Souls is the real issue. It's the absolute best card in the draft block, and it's not even close. I would take Lingering Souls over any of the possible other cards in the set, including Sorin, 100 times out of 100, and it would never feel wrong. It's part of the reason I like 3xISD way more than DKA/ISD/ISD as Lingering Souls is legitimately oppressive as an uncommon and not having to see that in too high of a percentage of drafts is nice. It's almost impossible to efficiently deal with, and casting both the front and backside of the card often feels like an effortless GG. Another reason is that DKA doesn't really improve the insanely awesome archetypes of 3xISD and what it brings to the table is a bit tougher to commit around. Decks like Spider Spawning/BurningVengeance/GW humans/etc get a bit worse as you lose the titular cards and others such as Tracker's Instincts, Mulch, etc.
Nah Souls is just really that much better. Works with discard, you can gain full value if you only have 3 mana over the course of two turns, it's FOUR POWER IN THE AIR over 4 bodies, none of those answers are efficient at all except as chumping and it feels pretty good if that's how they're choosing to deal with my Lingering Souls if attacking is the right choice for me (and you should have some number of those white cards, as you're playing white and taking white cards). Like, using an entire card to kill half of mine seems terrible, and spending pretty important Burning Vengeance triggers on each of my individual spirits seems pretty amazing for me overall as well. All of those cards are just as efficient if not better versus Sorin, where you kill the ***** in the way and attack in. Plus if I'm passing Sorin over Lingering Souls, my lingering souls absolutely ****s up Sorin if they end up facing each other. Plus you're 100% committing yourself to BW with Sorin, whereas it's a LOT easier to splash one side of Lingering Souls. Plus Sorin is incremental value, whereas Lingering Souls wins you the game more immediately and a bit easier with evasion.
Long story short, Lingering Souls is an absolutely absurd card and is really that much better than anything you could be doing in that draft format for so many reasons.
Well thank god I'm not adding DKA! I'm happy to stick with straight ISD. Only thing that sounds like a cut so far is Garruk. Might cut Garruk and add another Spider Spawning to keep the colors even.

"Personally I love high-riak, low-reqars gambles. Life's best with a decent amount of riak. And f*** reqars."
