I've always assumed that there is 15 cards in a pack, but recently I noticed that when you buy a real pack of cards, you get 10 commons, 3 uncommons, 1 rare/mythic and 1 basic land (and 1 token). When I do a normal draft, the first thing we do is take all of the basic lands out of the pack (and the tokens), which means that you're effectively only drafting 14 cards.
Adding an extra card would give decks more options and ultimately make them better/more consistent, right? That said, are packs in your cube 14 or 15 cards?
As with typical 8 player draft, I also make sure that the same pack only comes to you at most twice. So for 5 players, my playgroup would make 5 packs of 9 cards:
8 draft players -- 15 card/pack x 3 packs = 45 card pool
7 draft players -- 12 card/pack x 4 packs = 48 card pool
6 draft players -- 11 card/pack x 4 packs = 44 card pool
5 draft players -- 9 card/pack x 5 packs = 45 card pool
4 draft players -- 8 card/pack x 6 packs = 48 card pool
and so on.. but I'm sure every group have their nuances.. to each their own.
We tend to draft with 4-6 players, and usually do 5 packs of 9 cards each.
