Episode #6 is up! We talked about synergy, mana-fixing, the MTGO Cube, build-around-me cards and Storm in Cube with Jan van der Vegt (aka Dzy). Check it out!
We are back with our M15 Cube Set Review! Join us in this card-by-card discussion and let us know where you stand regarding the new cards (particularly between Scuttling Doom Engine and Soul of New Phyrexia)!
Yeah, this was a bumper episode but luckily mrbrightside put in a ton of extra work (thanks man!) and added timestamps so you can skip to your favourite cards for discussion. If people liked or didn't like the lengthier set review format, let us know..!
Great show guys, you are my favorite cube podcast by a mile. Your perspectives are insightful, with the right amount of humor and relatable attitude. As far as the longer show format, bring it on. I have an hour commute and need all the cube I can get.
Thank you for the kind words, dschumm, I can tell you they made my day. Glad to know you didn't mind the longer show; it will not happen every time (because it's a lot of work to edit, not to mention the timestamps) but it's good to know we won't turn listeners away (hopefully!) if we have a longer discussion. Thanks for listening!
Episode #8 is up! We talk about the return of Morph cards, 3-color cards, the choice of mana-fixing lands and the philosophy of gold sections in Cube. As always, feedback is much appreciated!
Listened to Ep #8. Good stuff!
Also, +1 to everything said about Sarkhan Vol.
My fringe gold card would be Sphinx's Revelation. Drawing cards and gaining life are things WU control players really want and need. I wish I could run this card.
I encourage you to continue to have a cube news section. Regular magic podcasts have lots of news but cube-centric casts rarely do. And I am a sucker for reckless speculation. As far as morph coming back, I am pretty skeptical. If feel like such a parasitic mechanic that I removed for being gimmicky. Most of the morph fatties play out like bad echo cards that were small and easy to kill for a turn. The other like bane and firecat were pulled because the colors have better things to do. We will probably get a couple with odd morph costs/overpowered stats but I doubt it will be more than the bestow creatures. And I am only running 3 of those.
Your discussion about 3 color cards had me thinking I would be happy to drop a couple of really exciting ones in. Right now I like Maelstrom Wanderer, Nicol Bolas Planeswalker and crime//punishment. I feel like the split card is criminally underdiscussed because few know what t odo with tri color cards and a wedge set might drum up some interest again. It has been great in the attrition style decks, against aggro tokens, and just as a silver bullet. I originally ran it as a place holder until I picked up a pernicious deed, but my group likes it enough to want to keep it so it is just dumped in with the colorless stuff right now. It is very nice is the removal heavy decks becasue you can reanimate your opponents threat with it if you get a draw too heavy on removal. I also play lots of fatties to the value goes up.
The land discussion is always good to hear. Lot of people are trying to build a cube, and one of my top recommendations is to work hard on the land content but don't overspend. I am still missing a tundra and underground sea, but that is how I fit the manlands in. I just don't see spending the $500 or $150 for collectors edition just to try and find room for the manlands elsewhere. There are better ways to improve the cube for that kind of money. I actually don't play the other 3 because I don't find them better than what I am running in their respective gold sections. I have 4 creature lands that dont take dual colors to activate so I am fine for now. That said enemy manlands would probably make it for a couple guilds if not all 5.
I encourage you to continue to have a cube news section. Regular magic podcasts have lots of news but cube-centric casts rarely do.
Sure, thanks for weighing in - a cube-oriented take on relevant news from WotC or other credible sources is a little gap to fill for us. Unfortunately, we have a backlog of one more episode before we can mention FTV:A in a cast, but we will cover that in news later

I actually really like the idea of morph, and the mind games that can ensue when you have several around - I'm hoping for lots of good ones, that would entice me to get Firecast and Angel back in. I think of something like Infect or Arcane as being more parasitic, as the Morph cards can still stand alone. I think there will be enough interesting takes on Morph to change your mind!
By the way, three Bestow cards is way above the curve for most block mechanics' representation... that mechanic turned out well for cube with Scarhide, Herald, Satyr and Nighthowler all being pretty cubeable IMO.

Yeah, I would also be prepared to consider really good three colour cards from Khans. They would need to be a high pick and pull me towards some archetype to make the cut. I like Crime//Punishment a lot, and Hide//Seek and Catch//Release are possibly the best options in their respective wedges too.

I will always find space for cards as good and universally played as lands like Creeping Tar Pit! We have said before on the show how there are plenty of great choices even without proxying or buying the dual lands. And we're also hoping for enemy manlands
Thanks for listening and commenting, guys, much appreciated.
@hardb0dy: Yeah, Sarkhan Vol is a beast still, and more importantly, it is pretty unique on everything it does, which really helps it keep its slot. I like Sphinx's Revelation, too - you can't really chain them together like you do in Standard but that does not mean it's not a pretty powerful Cube card. It's really hard to fit it in smaller Gold sections but running 7 cards for each pair I had no excuse not to run it myself (and I may or may not run Elixir of Immortality to go with it ).
@dschumm: Crime // Punishment was not on my radar but I can see the card being good (I don't know if it would be better than something like Gaze of Granite but being cheap AND flexible is nice).
We did not go into (more) detail with that but I feel like the Reserved List is going to give Wizards a lot of problems in the future (more so, I mean). Luckily I was able to get my Revised duals but it's hard for me to talk about all these great cube cards and then tell people they either have to spend thousands of <insert relevant currency here> for just 10 cards or they have to proxy them. This quickly turning into a no-win scenario and I would like to see WotC print some sort of Collectors' Cube Gold Set with updated wording and some sweet new artwork. That's not to say people can't get creative, like you did, but I would like to see a better solution.
Like Liam said, we can't really talk about FtV since we already recorded the next episode (although it won't come out for ~2 weeks) due to some scheduling issues (=vacations) but expect that in the near future! And thanks again for the comments - getting this kind of feedback will allow us to improve the show in future episodes!
I actually feel the opposite about the reserved list. The absolute best option might be out of reach, but cubeable replacements are on the rise. The last 5 blocks feature playable duals. Fetches will get a reprint in the next couple years, and we have news that they are going to try to do full cycles in the future.
This week we start the tour of colourless cards in Cube! Join us for a discussion about the universal mana-fixing lands, colourless utility lands, mana rocks and some of the powerful Equipment available, including Swords and their role in Cube! Also, tune in two weeks from now for the rest of the discussion on colourless cards (including the ‘broken’ Equipment and the Moxen).
**Note: Skype was acting funny the day we recorded so the sound quality is slightly lower than previous episodes and we apologize for that. It’s still decent, anyway. :)**
Another good show, I hate to have to wait until the next half comes out.
This is a huge topic so I know you had to limit the card you include but on the first half you mostly talked about staples. I would love to hear your input on more fringe cards, or ones that didn't hold up for you. Some lands I always wonder about : Nyxthos, Cavern of Souls, and Ancient Ziggurat. The last two seem like a way to throw aggro a bone in compensation for all of the lands that are great for midrange/control.
For the next segment I hope you have time for great build around cards like birthing pod, the stick, and mimic vat.
Yeah, we are always game for talking about listener-suggested cards! We already recorded the next part of the episode, although we were having MAJOR recording issues with the call dropping, and had to hold off of talking about power/unpowered and that whole debate. On the other hand, we did carry on talking about equipment, and went in a lot of detail on some build-around cards from the colourless section like Smokestack, Winter Orb and Mimic Vat (so hopefully that bit's up your street). We will definitely pencil in an UN-show some time! I did run Gifts Given at one point, it's so brutal.
We will hopefully record a bumper episode next time for #11 on the fast mana and powered-unpowered cubes. As for now our new episode should be up quite soon!
PS: On Cavern of Souls, I have that as an add-in package for when we draft our general stack. It's a really solid overall card and I'll talk about it at some point.
After some issues with the recording and the editing, episode 010 is now up! Like Goodking mentioned above, we discussed the rest of the equipment and some buid-around-me cards. There is also a short bonus segment on the FtV: Annihilation cards! Check it out!
I'm liking the podcast so far you guys. Good work!
Thank you for your kind words, Juju.
I'd love to be a guest someday
We would have to sort out the 12-hour time difference but it as it turns out you would actually be a great guest for a future show we plan on doing, so we'll try to make it happen.
Also, I can't access all of your episodes on itunes via my iphone. The manadeprived feed only shows the most recent one.
I'll check with the ManaDeprived guys and see what we can do, we'll give further updates when we have them.
Thanks for commenting! Our KTK set review will be up soon (hopefully), we hope you can check that out!
Episode #11 (our KTK set review) is up! Join us in this card-by-card discussion and let us know where you stand regarding the new cards! As always, any feedback is good feedback.
A) Thank you so much for publishing timestamps for each card you talk about. Since I listen to podcasts while multi-tasking, I have to divert my attention as the need arises and in many podcasts if I missed the exact moment the declaration of the current card/topic they are talking about is made I can get lost for a bit.
B) It sounds this was recorded before the pre-release. I can only assume other more important obligations got in the way but a review show posted a month after being initially recorded and after most of the Magic community has gotten to play with these cards and seen them in action at high level events is awkward. I assumed when I went to listen to the show that it was recorded last week or so and would include some of your experiences in the past month actually playing with the cards. I'm sure you did the best you could under the restrictions placed upon you guys by your daily lives but its the difference between talking about who is going to win the World Cup and publishing 3-4 weeks after the event and talking about the aftermath of the event. This isn't to say I didn't enjoy the show, I did and it was a good episode with good conversation, but the timing issue causes it to lose some value

We recorded before the pre-release, indeed. Glad to know you still enjoyed the episode, but you're right that it should have come out earlier, and that is totally my responsibility, between the original 3.5hours of recording and the small fire in my kitchen (!) the day I was originally thinking the editing. Should not happen again as we will make sure next set reviews come out in a timely fashion. Thanks for commenting!
Episode #12 is up! We talked with Thomas Krone about his CubeVitational tournament; learn all about this year-long, 16-player Cube tournament as we discuss topics like Cube FNMs, de-pimping a Cube, themed Cubes, the Amsterdam Cube community, and more! Also, our C14 set review will be up next Tuesday. As always, all feedback is good feedback!
Big thank you. I updated my feed last week and got two great episodes. The cubevitational was fun to learn about it and I encourage you to make this a yearly segment.
I am mostly in agreement with the C14 rating you shared. Many were pumped about dualcaster mage but you guys seemed underwhelmed ( I think rightfully). Merciless affliction has been a real star for us so far. These commander sets are really fun for cube because I feel like we get cards that would never see standard along with some choice reprints.
Big thank you. I updated my feed last week and got two great episodes. The cubevitational was fun to learn about it and I encourage you to make this a yearly segment.
We'll definitely consider that, and I guess Thomas wouldn't mind as well.

Yeah, these sets are fun. Personally, I feel like we may have dropped the ball on Titania. It did not look very good to me but people are getting very positive results on her - at this point, it's likely I will include it in a future update. Once again, thanks for listening!
