I have a cube that will ultimately be powered. I only run black lotus, library of alexandria, and mana drain at the moment. To pick up a bit of slack I came up with an idea which I stole from Harry Potter.
I run one blank card, with a slip of paper, on which is written "the card of requirement" which is, at all times except while on the stack or on the battlefield, any card which you require it to be.
I understand how this will be considered hokey by a lot of people, but it is really kind of rad at the same time. No one has complained about anyway.
What are other peoples thoughts on a one-of wild card in your cube? Do you guys view your cube as "too pure" to include something like this?
Comments welcome.
I feel like I have explained poorly, and for that I apologize. The card of requirement, tcor, is any card you require while anyplace except on the stack or battlefield, but while on the stack or battlefield it is whatever card you have chosen to cast. so lets say you cast silence, tcor becomes silence, resolves or is countered, and then when it gets placed in the graveyard it then becomes, lets say, genesis.
the spirit of the card is to add a wild card element. i hope you all understand better my intention with tcor.
If my playgroup were more experienced I would consider doing something like this, but only for cards which aren't already in the cube. And you could only choose a card for it to be once per game. Otherwise it's a bit too much of a one card combo and not the swiss army knife that I think I would prefer.
we used to play a format like this it was called mental magic and you started like a normal game 7 cards any card could be played face down as a painless city of brass and you could play any card but only once per card the game was all about card advantage. it had insane plays like "ancestral recall", up return "Squee", cast "FoF", flashback "Deep Analysis" nice 9+ card advantage from one card there. Knowledge of old and strange cards gave one a huge advantage and it was pretty fun.
As Eidolon pointed out, you can turn this card into cards that cycle or suspend making it way too good when used multiple times. I think as soon as you name a card with this, then you've used its effect. This means no shenanigans with Survival or turning it into a Squee, Eidolon (hehe), or Death Spark.
Let me know how this plays out. I wouldn't implement this in my list, but it sounds like a blast :-D
I played lots of mental magic in my day, but the restriction was that you could only use a card with the same mana cost printed on the card you were using. so the 3U cards you found were usually Fact or Fiction then Flashed back as Deep Analysis. And each card could only be played once (each MTG card, not each physical card).
I was loads of fun.
Your placeholder card, if it works like I think it does (e.g. it can be any magic card and when I play it, it IS that card) is easily the most powerful card in the cube by an insane margin. I don't think the OP intended it to only work with obscure suspend and cycling stuff. I think you actually get a wildcard.
The only limit on it that I would change is that it's truly a "card of requirement". Meaning that when you use it, it is for something that you need at that moment.
I'm not a fan of the idea, but I like the thought exercise of making it work. Should the card maybe have an actual casting cost and be a tutor that fetches you cards out of thin air?
Insanely OP Card 6, Sorcery
As you cast ~, name a card (that's not in your deck). Put a proxy of the named card into your hand. (Exile Insanely OP Card)
That card is not exactly what you asked for, but it would do something like what you meant. Being a six-mana sorcery is restrictive, but a) it's freaking awesome and b) you can change that to whatever you like. It would not exactly be broken, but very good, and it would only help control. Most of the time, you would get Vindicate, Mana Drain or Demonic Tutor, I guess, with honorable mentions to fatties and ***.
Specialities about the cube: U tempo, B aggro, R slow-ish are supported. G aggro is not.
Currently trying to support tokens in all colors but blue, in different ways: W pumps them, B sacrifices them, R suicides them, G has decent-sized ones.

yes indeed, it is a wild card. you got the nail on the head.
1. You will get into situations where the players think the card being cast costs 2B instead of 1BB or the like. (what does slay cost?) Anything that makes people go onto oracle should be avoided.
2. No matter what, this is the number one pick in the cube. Because it's both the library of alexandria you passed and the black lotus that want' in your pack.
I think the card would be more interesting if you did this. And I'm still not a fan of this idea.
Room of Requirement 1
Room of Requirement is any card with converted mana cost of one.
Room of Requirement 2
Room of requirement is any card with converted mana cost of two.

Because I think you can actually win the game straight up if it can be different cards in different zones. Ancestral Recall + Squee is insane, but there must be some kind of combo that wins right off the bat.
You should have to declare what it is when you're deckbuilding. Write it down, or announce it, and it has to be that card until the next draft. It would still be broken, but it least it isn't the perfect card in every situation that prevents you from basically ever losing a game.
I like the blank card idea, but I think to make it less broken it can only be a copy of whatever card you already drafted and declare it to be that card for the rest of the draft during deckbuilding.
I dropped this card. I really, really like it. I like that its broken. I like that it creates imbalance. I like how you can regrow as squee and time walk again. because the absolute worst case is that you shuffle and play again.
But, i dropped it. Because after my friends became aware of the thread, they all cited it as reason to exclude it. Which was fine, but I hadnt realized that I was the only one enjoying it. And thats not what my cube is for.
Thank you for all the help everyone.

Plus, it's better if you know lots of random cards, which is a bit of an odd thing really.

still insanely powerful. i understand if people shy away from things like this, but its cool to hear other peoples thoughts.
