I opened the original Masticore when it came out and was a chase card, and I traded it a pile of jank. I'll get one at some point and add it: they aren't expensive. Original art for the odd protruding object. Razormane Masticore is not a card I adore, but it is a mainstay in my cube, and is a pretty high pick. I never liked Molten-Tail Masticore much.
I always imagined the thing in its mouth was a pipe when I was a kid. It's probably actually supposed to be part of some unfortunate Phyrexian.
Yea I would say Molten-Tail Masticore is definitely the worst in cube, needing to exile a creature is what killed it for me. It's not a bad card, just I think OG and Razormane go into a lot more decks and have less hoops to jump through.
I've had the most success with Molten-Tail, but that was when it first came out and cube was a bit different then. Blasting people for 4 is so much reach in aggro/faster midrange decks/builds that are non-red.
Back when aggro decks were in need of curve-toppers, Molten-Tail was a good option. Now, it's just not necessary. But control creatures are still short at 4, and the OG Masticore still sees quite a bit of play.
How do we feel about the Masticores in 2020? I currently run all 3 (original, Moltentail and Razormane) but considering cutting at least the Razormane.
I like Masticore, and Molten-Tail is ...okay. Razormane isn't good at all, IMO. I haven't cubed with any of them in a really long time. OG Masticore is still a pretty cool card though, and I play it in decks when I'm guest-drafting other cubes.
I think Lesser Masticore is the best one for cubes nowadays. Like you said, it can be a discard outlet for decks that want one, but without it costing you a card per turn. It's a persist combo enabler (obviously) and it's half the cost of the other ones. It can randomly snipe off small creatures still too, though that aspect of it is a bit overcosted on this version.

I would love to own either a Masticore gumball machine or a Masticore popcorn maker!
