I think Vela is worse than Havengul Lich. Only useful in UB tempo decks, and there the 6CC is a pain to reach. Too expensive for the mass pump it provides, and too weak for its casting cost.
Archon is actually the Greek word for a lord or ruler. It also denotes the governing celestial or demonic entities from certain late antiquity belief systems, which is what Magic draws on. I'm not sure where the iconography of winged lions, scales of justice and blindfolds comes from, but I'd guess the blindfold and scales come from depictions of Blind Justice since the late 15th century.
Fair enough. I did a quick Wikipedia search and didn't see any fantasy context. I love that their archons don't like to see where they are going...as they wave a giant sword around while they ride a giant flying Lion.
Edit: And yes, Archon the game was awesome. I picked up the board game Dirge: Carnage in Crimson solely because it reminded me of Archon.
I'm definitely intrigued by Brindle Stout. He's certainly not an aggro creature, but since I'm trying to push Braids/Smallpox/Smokestack in black, he seems like he might fill an interesting role in green/black decks. I could also see him fitting in bant control lists that would run Wall of Blossoms, although that's certainly a less amazing fit.
Obviously he's good in Smokestack decks, but what do people think about him in other archetypes? Is he broad enough to see play in multiple decks?
I think it's about on par with a green Mogg War Marshal; maybe a little worse because the decks that want it the most (Braids/Stack/Clamp) only gets two bodies instead of three, and it's not as useful in token/anthem builds. I'm not even remotely interested in it.

He looks to be quite good in both defensive and offensive capability. That is forgetting his combo potential with cards like Skullclamp, Recurring Nightmare, etc. I think he is certainly worth trying.
Shoat is a fine card to run against an aggressive deck. He blocks, he dies, and he blocks again. In some kind of Smokestack/Braids build, he's extra value. Still, I don't think I'd displace one of green's already-tight two drops for the Shoat in 450.
So far, there are no cards in this set that I'm interested in for cube (or really for anything else I play). Excellent! I hope I can more or less ignore Planechase 2 and focus on FTV: Realms, M13, and RTR. That's quite enough!
I don't see how Krond the Dawn-Clad is in any way not a mono-white card, and certainly not at that intensity of green cost for the abilities he has. It seems very arbitrary to me.

there are plenty of cards like this, especially in alara block. it kind of bothers me but it's nothing new.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.

It's presumably GW for EDH purposes. Why it had to cost CCCDDD is beyond me.
Man, if only equip costs got to be 2 less for this guy. I can't think of much where I'm going to save on with this guy. Maybe if I still ran Stonewood Invocation.
That said, he doesn't stop you from killing him, but he certainly makes it much worse value. He's no Sigarda, but he definitely makes an impact on the board. G/W is pretty tight though. I'm not sure this guy pushes Mirari's Wake out for me, and that's pretty much the next G/W card to go from my cube.
I laughed for about 10 years!

Archons are a lot like angels. I think in the Magic universe, archons are male and angels are female.
Archon was also the best game for Commodore 64. It was a fantasy-themed chess game. I miss playing it.
And Humpty's comment wins the thread, if not the entire forum. Excellent!

Sometimes two high templars or dark templars love each other very much, and they merge to become an archon.

As is, this would be quite good. But there's a colourless mana cost in front of the UR (look at the card picture). We just don't know what it is yet.

Sadly, I really can't see him being run above the abundance of awesome GW cards.
