How good/bad is Protean Hulk? I know that we obviously don't get the instant-win combos with him, but is he still worth considering? He seems like he could be pretty sick with recurring nightmare or in most BGx midrange decks as a curve-topper.
Just got to say, you've definitely earned distinction as an MTGS hero
Quote from Stardust »
Because he's the hero MTGS deserves, and the one it needs right now. So we'll global him. Because he can take it. Because he's not just our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. An expired rascal.

ExpiredRascals you sir are a god-like hero.

ER is a masterful god who cannot be beaten in any endeavour.
There are just too many green fatties that are better than this. Sure, if you have a sac outlet he could be pretty sweet, or, since this is cube, you could play a seven-drop that wins the game with no work. I could see plopping this guy down and watching your opponent take six twice before they beat you. Maybe at 720, but even then I think there are many fatties I'd prefer.
It's good with Birthing Pod, Recurring Nightmare and Sneak Attack. But I don't think it's good enough on its own. Couldn't give the poor guy Trample at least?
I ran Protean Hulk back in the day (with this art) - it was fine back then but there are much better ramp targets nowadays with Avenger of Zendikar, Hornet Queen and Pelakka Wurm.
Like others have said, I really wish it had some form of evasion like trample.
@Bullywug_King: If it were 1 mana cheaper, it would not be printable, since it could replace itself in constructed.
True, good catch, I was looking from a singleton cube perspective, but having to to go through 4 of these in a row would be ridiculous in constructed. How about 1 cheaper, trample, and 5 or less CMC worth of creatures.
I have really been wanting to fit more shenanigans into my Powered Cube at the 450 level, and have been wanting to introduce Flash + Protean Hulk to fit alongside the usual enablers of Sneak Attack, Show and Tell, and Natural Order. Is anyone in this threat running Flash and/or Protean Hulk? How has it shaped up over the years?

The issue with Flash and Protean Hulk is that they involve very specific cards to be good. Flash mainly focuses on ETB / death triggers, and most of them are not worth 2 cards for without attacking, like Sneak Attack. Only Protean Hulk / Academy Rector have extremely solid death triggers, but even those require extremely niche cards to be worth it.
Yes, but those are still narrow scenarios that are not exactly game winning combos. Flash / Hulk / Angel of Serenity / Fiend Hunter aren't exactly the most commonly cubed cards, and eating up 4 slots just for those types of narrow non-game winning combos isn't worth the real estate, IMO.

I mean, is that any worse than the 2 cards currently already eating up slots and not being played?

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're trying to ask. All I can say is that Flash / Protean Hulk are highly parasitic and not even too great when together. Sundering Titan is a great cube card for general shenanigans type stuff, and Angel of Serenity / Fiend Hunter are decent on their own. Adding Flash isn't exactly breaking any of those cards since they're just removal based combos that don't exactly put you in a game winning position.
