ashes to ashes seems similar in power to slaughter (which people definitely run) and i like it. i tried looking around but i didn't see any discussion on it, though. what is the general consensus on this card?
edit: while we're on the subject of paying life to kill stuff, what do people think of vendetta?
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
I'm not a big fan of either. If I had to run one, it'd be Ashes to Ashes for sure. I ran it for a long time before ultimately cutting it for less painful removal.

you do play snuff out, right? slaughter seems similar except you can two for one (or better) with it. you've played quite a bit more with the cube than me so i'm interested to hear why you like the one but not the other.

My guess on why Snuff Out > Slaughter is because you can play Snuff out for free when you are all tapped out if you need to and Slaughter will always be 2BB.
I like Ashes to Ashes. It has a few things going for it.
1. I have a signed one from the Dark.
2. There is something about old cards like this that just seem to radiate the feel of Magic. I love including cards like this whenever possible.
3. It's a 2:1
But alas black has such a wealth of good remvoal spells that it does not make the cut.

Ashes to Ashes is certainly better than Slaughter, and it exiles rather than destroys, which is a big plus point. The needing two creature targets can hamstring it at times. It's fine for larger Cubes as it's still a good card, but it can't compete with more versatile black removal with less stringent drawbacks. Black pays enough life for effects as it is, and most of the time Barter in Blood will do just as well.

Snuff Out is free. That's the sole reason for it's inclusion. Free spells are teh nutz.
Honestly, I don't really like Slaughter at all. I can generate card advantage by using removal that's strapped to a creature, I don't want to pay 4BBBBand 4 life to dark banishing twice.
aha! one downside i hadn't thought of.
Ya, after Ashes to Ashes couldn't remove the one creature that was beating me down, it made me think hard about the inclusion of Ashes to Ashes. Ultimately it was cut, but I think that it can find a home in a larger cube still.
Ashes to ashes for sure, Slaughter just cost so much mana.....

I am petitioning for the end of: the Mythic rarity, the Planeswalker card type, the post-8th edition card faces, the 2010 rule changes, colorless cards that aren't artifacts or lands, the Legendary supertype, the stack, auras, multicolor cards, artifact creatures, tokens, goblins, merfolk, elves, sorceries, instants, and permanents. Basically, I just want to play with purple contraptions.

Serious question, though: how often is the need to target 2 creatures actually relevant? With the amount of creatures I run in my cube (a lot more than I once did, thanks to creature power creep) I really don't see situations where my opponent is running amok with only 1 creature very frequently. Is my experience anomalous with the rest of the board?

I have upped the creature content in my cube so it is a rare circumstance that I am facing down one threat. My group doesn't overcoommit much, ofr fear of wraths but that rarely stops someone from dropping a second creature. Hexprrof beats and big control finishers aside, I don't see two creatures beain a problem.
Do we need to make SCD threads from discussions that are years old? A lot has changed over the years, and a lot of the discussion could wind up being pretty irrelevant by today's standards. We got kinda lucky with this one, but still.

Agreed. The [SCD]s should be a clean slate. We can always move over comments manually (via quote) that we think are necessary, but porting the whole thread over from Jan 2010 is a bad idea, imo.
Yeah I started the thread, and am newer around here. I saw the other one was over two years old, not marked [SCD] and in the wrong area, so I figured I it might be worth a discussion. But I wasn't exactly sure the forum decorum.
Especially since the aspect of Aggro, increased creature density, seems to be more of a current topic, I was hoping to have a discussion on those basis without going necro with a thread which I know is also a no-no.

that's so true. there's something about older cards that feels so much less mechanized and flavorless.

Exile two target threads. If a player in that thread controls any cards of Pokémon or Final Fantasy alterations, facepalm 1. You lose 5 life.
