Creature - Hydra
Trample
Kalonian Hydra enters the battlefield with four +1/+1 counters on it.
Whenever Kalonian Hydra attacks, double the number of +1/+1 counters on each creature you control. 0/0
Is it just me or does this card seem great? A 4/4 for 5 is totally fine but swinging for 8 trample on its first attack is bonkers. It resembles Wolfir Silverheart because the creature gets crazy big in a hurry.
I think it's definitely Cubeworthy but the question is where does it rank in the green 5-drop section?
Here are the rankings of 5-drop creatures in eidolon's list:
At 5, I run:
Acidic Slime
Thragtusk
Vorapede
Genesis
Wolfir Silverheart
Indrik Stomphowler
Green's five-drops define it. They're all incredibly good.
But when I see this one, I am filled with an urge to ignore all of them and run this one instead. I absolutely prefer this to Prime Time; perhaps I'll go back to having no six drops just to play with this, as I can't help myself but play it.
One of those rare, or rather Mythic Rare, cards that fit into Spike, Timmy and Jhonny archtypes. I think it does not matter which of the 5 drops you put in at this point. They are all good.
Personally I will stick with what I have and have to wait it off; perhaps at one point there will be many +1/+1 counters in green it will be crazy not to run this guy.
Everyone beware of Green's 5th turn, or even earlier when ramping!
Have a helicopter drop you off out front. Light your cigar with a small Indonesian boy holding a black lotus. Then bust out a craw wurm deck with no sleeves. Raw dog shuffle, loose terribly, flip the table, leave in a hovercraft.
Yeah, definitely getting this guy in my 360 somewhere. I don't run swords and have a few other ways for green to deal with artifacts, so maybe stomphowler is out. Rough choice. Maybe a non-5 drop
Wow green 5-drops are nuts. This new dude looks very solid, yet Wolfir Silverheart seems better because it gets you 4 attacking power the turn it drops. I really don't have room for another green 5-drop, but it should be a good include for bigger cubes (600+?).
Im thinking im cutting prime time for this, as my cube gets more streamlined and i take out krosan skyscrapers for elvish mystics, primes abiltiy without any bombtastic lands in librsry becomes: you may mill yoirself twice. It hurts to cut the only green 6 drop because green desperstely wants stuff to ramp into but the hydra, and the 5 drop slot is just stronger
I like Vorapede and Thragtusk for there resilence, slime for utility, and abusibility, and silverheart for his 'hastyness'. But I would try this guy over the others. I think he is better than Prime Time unless you have an even costlier fatty to cast that needs ramping(or are reanimating him). I play Silvos in the 6 slot as well unlike most here.
I think I will have to try him out, but I think even if he makes it in, his charm will wear off, and he will be a pretty generic fatty. Deal with him or die! Which is fine, but certainly not something I am short of in green.
Other green creatures have great utility value, and I don't really wanna cut them for a big dumb beater. And even if I did, I'd rather play something like Silverheart, which can give me immediate value and buff other threats.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
This guy seems pretty scary. Like maybe baneslayer scary. I'm going to give it a try.
He's two-swing lethal and can't be effectively blocked due to trample. That is indeed pretty scary. It fails the Vindicate test - so does Baneslayer, but all of green's other 5 drops pass it, with Wolfir being the "worst" at the vindicate test as he only gives you a Monstrous growth if he's vindicated. I still like Wolfir better than this, and I'm not sure there's room for two "mindless" beaters in green at 5.

Not sure how much I like this card. It's hard to cut an excellent utility creature for a beater and green's 5-drops are almost all excellent utility creatures. Still, this will kill an opponent pretty fast if not dealt with. I guess I could cut Thornling or Primeval Titan, but those are really good too.
This card is on my radar but I'm not sure will ultimately make it.
I think Kalonian Hydra is not very interesting to play with or against. They have the removal, it does nothing. They don't have it, they die. I also compare it to Wolfir Silverheart, and I think Silverheart adds some more interesting options in between while still being a giant threat.
I will certainly pick this guy up for my on deck binder. And might find the right place for him with my playgroup. I like him better than Silverheart, which I have never been super impressed with. But Silverheart certainly did not break into my 450, so...

If you end up testing him, I think thornling would be the thing to cut.
Would occasionally be fairly hilarious with the following:
Experiment one
Scavenging Ooze
Stormblood berserker
gorehouse chainwalker
Strangleroot Geist
ajani, caller of the pride
I'm okay with beating mindlessly with an 8/8 trampler. He fails the Vindicate test but he passes the Wildfire test which is important for my 5cc+ green section. The cut will be tough at 360 but I will find one to test this guy.
I think this is the green baneslayer, doesn't pass the vindicate test, but if you get to untap with it you're going to have the scariest threat on the board. Even crazier in green with all of the mana ramp. I'm going to test this card for sure.

What makes Baneslayer so good is the immediate presence it creates by crushing your opponent's next combat step and the ability to dig you out of a hole and save you when you're losing. This doesn't seem like it does anything but attack.
I like it less than Wolfir Silverheart in the "OMG that's big and dumb" category.
That being said, it's powerful enough to be worth thinkering with. I'll probably take a second look at my Green section. If I feel that there's any holes I want to plug, or tests I want to run, I'll give it a shot. Even then, it seems like a temporary inclusion at best.

Beat me to it. I was going to say something like this. BSA is more than just a beater. Hydra, not so much.
Its pretty obvious to me this is wotc's attempt at a green baneslayer as thundermaw hellkite was reds, the demon in m14 is blacks and blues is still missing.
Ive recently added both
Primordial hydra from m13 and the gruul hydra from gatecrash and both have been monsters in my cube, being able to e played on curve r be ramped o and be immediate threats that get scarier over time.
The same is true of this hydra and i like that aspect f green.
My green suite has aggro/ midrange and cards that just become lategame nightmares. The hydras givegreen a lategame.
Wolfir Silverheart has a higher upside, but I like this guy better. He excels against some of ramps problems (chump blockers) and is still great after Wrath, unlike the Soulbinder.

Where does the Hydra rank on this list? At what size Cube can a person run the top 8 listed there plus Hydra?
I will definitely be testing it this week.

I cannot see cutting any of these for this card. All of these fill such important roles I would be very reluctant to give one up.
