This might only be interesting to me, but I have some OCD about the frames in my cube. I only play modern-frame, non-foil cards for consistency. So all the reprints have me excited as well. Nice to see them dipping into stuff like PTK. So here are some "new" cards that have me excited. Let me know if I missed any:
And very sad to see another reprint set go by with no Armageddon, Strip Mine, Sinkhole, etc. I feel that good LD is what suffers the most with the modern-frame-no-foil restriction.
I really wish they'd print some new cards with old frames. Would be really sweet to see more cards like the judge Confidant and stuff, but without terrible shooting stars all over the place.

I feel ya, man. I want all non-foil/modern frames for my cube (though I do play old stuff)
I think I'm more excited by the fact that I can rid myself of my horrible art/white bordered Control Magic than anything else in the set. And I never would have thought we'd ever get an Arcane Denial reprint (with cool new art too!)
Glad to know I'm not the only one that loves the new frame
I was reatively happy with my Collecters edition control magic, but I'll be happy to make the switch
Edit: Is there a link where we can see the new art to old cards? the lists on the mothership all seem to be showing last printing. Man reincarnation's wording was weird back then.
Kind of. But I have played with a lot of newer players that prefer the old frame. For me, they look more like arcane spells with the old frame, and the newer frames look more like Pokemon cards. The old frame provides a much more fantasy-esque feel to the game, IMHO.
I imagine frame preference has a lot to do with when you started playing.
I started playing waaaaay back before Tempest and I still prefer the new frame in most instances. I like the improved clarity and legibility, and the fact that there's slightly more space for the art. It looks cleaner. On the other hand, I will usually try to run the old frames in most instances in my cube when there's a choice because I like the mix and it's nice to be reminded of the old days. Some cards just look better in the old frame for some reason. I don't know why.
I started way back in The Dark, and I typically prefer the new frame. I only prefer the old frame based on artwork, or if the card is foil. Old frame foils compared to new frame foils are far superior. 7th Edition BoP and *** compared to 8th Edition for example.
First time ever that we get non-foil black-bordered versions of Control Magic and Nevinyrral's Disk! I am currently trying to reduce the amount of white-bordered cards in my cube, but don't like foils, so this is a godsend.
I detest the old frames. Call me crazy but for the most part I like the new arts and foils. From the Vault foils are gorgeous.
This part in particular is just insane to me.
Regardless, it's not difficult to accommodate all both sets of players, since I would imagine it's a pretty even split. For older formats and cubes in particular I would imagine the preference is for old border and old foils. They need to make more of an effort to foil out staples in the old borders (a la Bob, Noble Hierarch, the Swords, and Crucible).

Glad to see this MCD. I've been switching over to modern-frame only, so this was entirely relevant for me
While I agree with the LD comment, I REALLY applaud WotC reprinting more P3K material....something I thought wouldn't happen. Whereas judge promos of the past or FtV things questionably allowed P3K to come back, the door is now legitimately open. They also reprinted the one main COMM guy I wanted: Strix. I'll try to get him as a non-proxy into my cube now. He was a cost-issue for me (because he's totally not $25 in my books but fantastic for the cube).
To actually answer the OP, I think this COMM set really enhanced blue. Control Magic, Dismiss, and Arcane Denial are three HUGE spells to gain in a modern-frame pool. The countermagic has been a big void coming over from "all frame, unpowered" to "modern frame" cardpool.
Could WotC have done more? Of course. I would have liked to see some of those FtV: 20 reprints in this set. I'm yet to bite the bullet on a new-faced Hymn. This would have been the perfect product.

I mean, hell, we're all on a forum for something that most people would describe as a "children's card game"...do what makes you happy. You are never too old to enjoy yourself.
The thought of replacing the Richard Kane Ferguson Arcane Denial with the terrible new art makes me throw up in my mouth a little bit.
Totally agreed. Also, not stoked about the Control Magic art. It's just OK. Love that I'll have an updated Karmic Guide because I can't spend money on a foil right now.
In non-cube territory, I love the old Famine card because it was so disturbing. I mean the guy is so hungry he's trying to eat tree bark. That's just wrong.
For those of us with discerning taste, there's the Beta version :cool2:. Not that the original art is superb, but at least it's classic.
Regarding the art, I think this is one of the cases where better art trumps nostalgic art. Even though "better" is relative and the new art isn't that great. As for the border, I gladly take a true black border over the stupid Beta border.

I prefer new border, but when I have to chose between new border with mediocre art and old border with amazingly evocative and iconic art, I surely stay with the old border. Don't fall for the "new border is always better" trap, people! Stay with RKF!
Also excited to see these reprints just for price reasons:

Might consider Arcane Denial too...
Stronghold Assassin <-- He is a zombie, he just hasn't been printed since that changed.
Glad to know I'm not the only one that loves the new frame

On spoiled card wishlisting and 'should-have-had'-isms:
I started with 4th edition in 1995, but I like the new frames a lot more, because they are just more practical than the old ones.

But if I had my choice is would be all old bordered foils. Especially the lands and artifacts.
My favorite alt-arts are definitely the beta look-a-likes

I actually like the new Control Magic art much better than the old. Like, not even close. Ditto for Prosperity.
I have a Beta clone, i wouldnt trade it for anything except an Alpha one.
