I cubed with Corpse Dance for a long time, and I think I like this card more. The initial investment is higher, and it can be destroyed without effect but its less conditional (Not the top creature card of GY), and the ability is 1 cheaper than using CD with buyback. Plus lifelink is gravy... I think this card is a difficult one to fight through for a number of decks.
That said, Corpse Dance has been homeless for over a year, and I don't know how much this effect will add to the cube.
Murderblade(hero's downfall), the dimir planeswalker and a thoughtseize reprint made the blackmage in me happy with this set, I'm not complaining about the weak(for cube) god and equipment.
I'd actually prefer Corpse Dance. The rider on this that prevents it from abuse (sac outlets, blink, bounce) is fairly annoying, it costs a ton of mana, and there's no way to jam it out in a hurry if you really need to. Also, Corpse Dance's instant speed has proved incredibly useful to me.
Repeatable reanimation is very good indeed. But don't forget that it's a huge dilemma on how many of this you will put in your deck. Too many equals dead draws. Too few and you're screwed if it gets blown up.
Both effects are good, but 2BB + 2BB before your first threatening move is a lot. Corpse Dance doesn't provide the lifelink, but it's a cheaper overall investment for the first threat and it can be used as an instant.

Yup 8 mana before the first activation is a killer. Lifelink in black is useful tho. Casual card I'm guessing

I guess it depends on what you mean by threatening, but playing it and swinging gives you immediate value. 4-6 life every turn is pretty powerful. I don't think it's good enough but the static ability is second best to blue in my opinion.
When I see Healing Salve, I'm often like "Oh girl, I wish I could turn every card into this." Thanks they removed the gain life part, otherwise this would have been broken.
For taking full advantage of the static ability, I think it needed to cost 1BB. If it had that cost with a 4B activation for some random late-game recursion, it would've been a much better card, IMO. I think I'll get much less value from this than from something like Nekrataal or Skinrender for the same cost.
Just posting to say this was absurd in my U/B tempoish deck last night. The lifelink was completely nuts at that cost. Black just doesn't get a lot of opportunities to offset the life loss its known for. In my deck with fetches, shocks, Sign in Blood effects, Bitterblossom, and a lack of an early game, the whip never felt dead.
I was able to fling in a Grave Titan, a couple value guys, and even just randomly grabbing a 2/2 was good. I had a few opportunities to fling a Myr Battlesphere as well, but I opted to leave the bigger stuff in my SB in favor of boarding into Ankh and some other aggressive stuff.
Anyway, Whip has my full attention and I expect it to stick around for a while.
hmm. Bitterblossom does love this card doesn't it?
I still think its cost is really prohibitive, but maybe with that sparkling recommendation I'll try it out.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I love trying out new cards even if they appear to be "bad" or "fringe" Cube cards. We've discovered lots of sweet Cube cards this way (Goblin Welder, Sheoldred & Shrine of Burning Rage to name a few).
I've got my eye on this one really for the lifelink. Similar to Kojiro's experience above, I'd say the blacker my deck gets, the more I wish I had any form of lifegain (seriously, Bob is a pariah at my table because he seems to have a knack for flipping the worst possible cards).
For 2BB, getting an unearthed lifelinker seems like it could be sweet.
I'be been thinking about cracking the whip, but haven't tested it myself yet. I always want life gain in my black decks when I run Arena + Bitterblossom + Bob + Sarcomancy + Vampire Lacerator ... Etc and the whip is repeatable even on blocks. I do have a lot of doubt but it can't hurt to pop it in.
Think of it this way, you can play it and block or you attack and gain 4-6 life then you ensure either your creatures get to survive to attack again or if your opponent killed them you can crack the whip. Plus life link works on Jackal Pup's ability if I'm not mistaken... I'm sure there are plenty of other bonuses from lifeIink.
I'm currently running Necropotence in my cube so I've been convinced to try this out to offset the life loss. Black is hungry enough for life gain in general and supports enough archetypes revolving around abusing ETB effects that I can see this being pretty sweet. If I do get around to cutting Necro, which I've been heavily considering, this might go with it.
Just want to say that I have been seeing this used more for it's life link ability than its reanimation; although the reanimation can be hhand but nothing compared to our prefereed reanimation spells.I think that this card is meant for midrange and control, and rocks in mono black control type decks being able to reanimate a huge threat after it has been countered is great, and this card really iundervalued in its threat level on the tablee.

I've always said that black needs lifegain, but I'm not sure about this one.

Of all the gods and weapons black is the only color to get one that have the same cmc.

And I recently cut Corpse Dance.
I won't "whip it"
Storm Crow is strictly worse than Seacoast Drake.
Aaaaaand I didn't see the sorcery part at the end.
This card is not happening.
