Reveal the top five cards of your library and separate them into two piles. An opponent chooses one of the piles. Put that pile into your hand and the other into your graveyard.
I mean its worse than Fact or Fiction but it isn't THAT much worse right? Fact or Fiction is stupid good so something 80% (random number, sue me) as good has to be cubeable right?
Well, it only goes in ~25% of the decks that the original can go into, and your opponent has the ultimate say in what you draw. Both of those are huge drawbacks.
Lets be real, if this was a Fact or Fiction reprint or this was the first time they ever printed the card, it would probably be rare. Card is certainly not what I would call simple and cards like Opportunity are already warping a limited format, imagine what an even stronger card would do
Well, it's also better in some ways too. I'm not proposing that it's worse in every way by any means. Let me illustrate:
You are in control of sculpting the piles, which means you can organize them so the cards in each pile have synergy with one another. Whereas when your opponent is in charge, they divide them so that they specifically don't. So with FoF, you pick which of two lower-quality piles you get to keep (usually the most powerful stand-alone card and whatever freebie comes along with it) ...and with this card, they pick which of the two better average quality piles you get to draw.
It'll be worse when there's one must-draw bomb and 4 lesser impact cards, but it'll be better when you reveal 5 cards of relatively equal powerlevel and you get to organize them into piles with the other cards that work well with them. At last you'll get to put the Thundermaw and your 2nd source of red into one pile, and the pair of Islands and the Cryptic Command into the other, instead of having them mixed unfavorably. Which leads to having lower-tier cards in terms of power-level, but picking up a pile of cards together that will do a better job of improving the quality of your hand as a whole.
I hope I worded that right. It was hard to wrap my head around at first. It's like a mix between FoF and Deep Analysis. Very fun, interesting, and skill-testing card (for both players). Looking forward to seeing it in action.
Cool card, definitely worse than FoF but still solid.
I'm very curious how the whole "worst of two better piles" compares to the best of two weaker piles.
I find there's a few too many times where FoF is cast in hopes of digging for a specific answer more so than getting card advantage.
This card is better in decks with high redundancy (counter burn! Coincidence?)
Much worse in decks like combo that is digging for a puzzle peice.
Yeah, it's definitely not on the power level of FoF, though it can be situationally better. Then again, making your opponent take a shot in the dark about what you want is part of the appeal of the original; here, you often telegraph exactly what you're looking for. I have a feeling that the 4 lands vs. exact card you need scenario is going to come up more often than it might seem at first glance. Still, cards like this are great fun and it should be a blast to try out.
Honestly, I think this card has a shot at being the 2nd or 3rd best Izzet card for the cube. It could very well be better than Izzet Charm, and I can't wait to test it and find out.
I don't think it's close to Izzet Charm, but it's pretty good nonetheless. Although it doesn't feel right including a worse version of a monocolour card in such an exclusive slot :-(
I might be the only one but I don't think this card is "fun". More toys for blue is not really what we' want for Christmas in our Cube.
If it turns out to be nearly on par with FoF, then its just another lame spell that crushes you but gets a pass for being "a skill tester". Even though the only "skill" involved is exploiting the fact that one color is ridiculously better than the rest.
I mean, hell, we're all on a forum for something that most people would describe as a "children's card game"...do what makes you happy. You are never too old to enjoy yourself.

I don't understand the hate. When was the last time a decent instant speed draw spell was printed?
The only ones I can think of from the last 10 years are Thirst for Knowledge and Gifts Ungiven. Maybe Blue Sun's Zenith...

Not sure what you're on about...you can complain about power level, but it's definitely hard to argue that Fact or Fiction takes skill to play and play against. Splitting the cards you have to make the piles as close as possible taking into account all of the information in the game and all that you know about how your opponent values his cards. Choosing you have to pick from 2 piles which are usually close in power but slightly different.
I'm not convinced this is good enough either. I don't like it better than Fire/Ice. Punisher mechanic are almost always bad for cube. I might like Jace's Ingenuity better, even.
Ridiculous comment, where have you been the last 5 years? Control is dead. Magic is about creatures now, while Divination and Cancel are considered competitive :vomit:
We can survive getting a more powerful spell than that every three sets.
Agreed
As for the card .... i am not convinced it's even that good. A good portion of FoFs power comes from it being splashed in all kinds of decks that need to dig deep to find combo pieces or specific answers. Especially those that can even involve the graveyard. Most of those are UB or UW.
Now in UR, i guess that only Kiki/Twin-Decks or Wildfire decks would really benefit greatly from it while all other UR stuff would probably rather have Thirst for Knowledge or other straight up card draw that doesn't show the cards to the opponent while also giving them choices.
It's a good card for sure, but it's a far cry from being near the powerlevel of Fact or Fiction.
I kinda disagree here because I think the card, as we're discussing, is solid. This isn't a ridiculous mythic. Nor does it have to be. I see it as a very solid draw spell and of all things, a good "spell" that doesn't have legs attached to it. The card also increases the tension for me to revamp my cube archetypes to run "spells matter". Here is just another way to reload and help the select creatures that bank off spells happening (ie young pyromancer). Sinultaneously it helps UR.dec in both midrange and control. Love the flavor of this card. And again, IMO, this doesn't have to alter MTG to be included. I like it as a very solid card. Pehaps that's the inner clash between users' reception. I view this card as a step closer to "dependable value" rather than "breaks open UR" and I'm very much a fan.

Fact or Fiction 2!
Nice card for the weak section, too.

Not sure how you can even have this thought. Card is virtually identical in design, except that the the roles are reversed.

It's a Fact or Fiction/Browbeat/Gifts Ungiven hybrid.

3 ways....cause it's a rare amiright?
Still, this is the first card from Theros that I'm actually genuinely interested in for my cube. Seems like a card that should have been in RTR.

I feel like I need to play with it to figure out how much of a drawback (and it certainly is) the swapping of who gets to make the choice is.

I'm quite excited for this thing myself. No way WotC allows this as uncommon though.
