I know a lot of people with smaller cubes do not have room for The Abyss but when you have a 720 card cube like I do it fits in perfect.
Is this combo as nuts as i think it is? If your token does not die on their turn when they pass to you, you can sac the token to abyss then get a new token. If your token died on their turn you just make the token first then sac it.
I know it is not the best combo of all time... but it seams damn fun!
It also works with Braids and a few other cards like that.
Unfortunately, this will not work the way you want it to.
If you start your turn with a snake in play, Ophiomancer will not trigger because he has what is known as an "intervening 'if' clause" in his ability. This means that if the condition is not true at the time it would trigger, it does not trigger, and if the condition is not true at the time the trigger resolves, it does not complete the action. Since you control a snake at the beginning of your upkeep, the condition is false and it will not trigger.
If you do NOT start your turn with a snake in play, you will have to choose something other than the snake to destroy with The Abyss. The Abyss does not use "sacrifice", it uses "destroy target non-artifact creature that player controls of his or her choice". Because it uses the word "target", you must choose a target for the ability at the time it triggers. Even if you stack the triggers such that you get a snake first, you must choose another target before that ability resolves. This second situation will work with Smokestack or Braids, Cabal Minion or Abhorrent Overlord or Shadowborn Demon or anything else that calls for a sacrifice, however.

It's much better with Braids, Smokestack and the Pox cards because you won't have to kill off the main body if the token is killed on your opponent's turn.
But yes, it's a good card with Braids. One of the main reasons it's cubed.

If you are interested in a truly great combo*) with The Abyss, combine it with artifact creatures and shroud creatures. No need to get an additional token engine going, just make sure your creatures are not legal targets for The Abyss and voilà, symmetry broken.
*)Granted, it is still not the fastest card ever, but I like it in UB artifact decks, an archetype that I like to support at 450 cards and that my playgroup enjoys.
