I feel like this drawback is a bit too much. There are also many cards make the downside really bad (faith fetters, temporal isolation, fire//ice, pestermite, tamiyo, tappers, ecetera). If you curve into him I think he is pretty good, but otherwise I dunno. We will have to see though.
My black 3-drop slot is actually pretty stacked, at least if you count the enchantments, too. And I feel safer with all the ones that I currently have. Master of the Feast is a nice and powerful card and it would be certainly intense to play with it, but it is just not for me.
Sure its got that drawback, but its very good. 1BB for a flying 5/5 isn't that bad either when you think about it. Besides black is well known for creatures with drawbacks.
I think the Abyssal Persecutor comparison is somewhat valid, except that this card is FAR far better. It costs 3 instead of 4 and the drawback isn't nearly as bad.
Which obviously aren't the only relevant factors of the card. Master of the Feast can be chumped for days by Emeria Angel, Lingering Souls, Bitterblossom and a few other cards. Abyssal Persecutor will legitimately have them at 0 in a few turns if they don't answer him. Their drawbacks aren't even remotely comparable, also. If they neutralize Persecutor on the board, you'll eventually need to find a way to remove him, but he likely isn't actually losing you the game. If he's on the board for two turns without doing anything or four turns without doing anything, there's almost always the same outcome. The difference between taking four turns to sac Master and two turns is massive.
That said, obviously, unless you're playing against a deck that has a lot of ways to neutralize Master without killing it, you have no need to play a decent suite of sacrifice/removal that can kill it. You'd be crazy to run Persecutor without a few ways to get rid of it. Master is basically a punisher mechanic card. They can choose to take damage/chump in the air and draw cards or remove it and not draw cards. Persecutor isn't. They're really not very comparable cards.
This is certainly a powerful card. How this plays out in powered cubes...no idea. For non-power cubes, I think this is a staple at all levels. You either kill this thing or die trying. Evasion is key

I mean, hell, we're all on a forum for something that most people would describe as a "children's card game"...do what makes you happy. You are never too old to enjoy yourself.
On the curve, dropping an aggro 1 drop, an aggro 2 drop then following up this guy with Armageddon just seems downright ugly, and hardly a "Magical Christmas Land" scenario. Even with the extra card draw, that's a pretty harsh clock.
The quality that really makes me like this guy is he's exciting/interesting for both players. You drop a way cheap dragon, and if your opponent doesn't have an answer, he still gets to rip two cards a turn trying to find one. Even if the opponent has an answer right away, he or she might still want to sandbag the answer and "take 5 to draw a card".
I think he's fun, the drawback makes him exciting and interactive, and it's a really fast clock for 3 mana. As I said before, the CA he gives up won't be much different than Goblin Guide's over the course of the game. A 5/5 flying for 3 mana is pretty good.
How does the Master of the Feast compare to Lifebane Zombie, Hearld of Torment and Xanthrid Necromancer? I'm looking into adding another 3 drop to my black section of the cube. I think Master of the Feast could be a really good card in my cube. I was also thinking of either adding either Herald of Torment or Lifebane Zombie. Not sure which card is better. I'm also not sure how many targets you want to have for Gravecrawler. Master of the Feast is just another Demon.
Granted I've only seen it in play once, so I can't say for certain, but I like it a lot more than any of those creatures, carl. It's a really powerful 3-drop.
I don't know how often prerelease play experience translates into the Cube environment, but Master of the Feast won me the games when he showed up. I usually dropped him from turns 3-5, and he just went to town on their life totals. I'm very excited to test him out in my own Cube.
Unlike many previous blocks, this set seems to have almost infinite removal. The block effectively has a doomblade variant that hits master of the feast.
Not exactly cube, but Im helping my friend test for the block pro tour and he's been insane against any deck not running 7+ instant speed ways to kill him.
Super rare a cube deck runs 5+ instant speed removal spells that can take him out. Im expecting this card to be banannas.

Slightly more removal than the past couple of blocks, but still drastically less than core sets or traditional mtg sets which in turn have drastically less than cube.

You're the dude who just lies a lot and makes people hate you and then magically becomes town later, right?
(Note: We've redesigned our black section to make it more midrange/controlling and it's been way more popular & successful than black aggro ever was)
Had this card in a mostly mono-black 4-man deck on Friday. It was a new archetype in the Cube with a bunch of black fliers/evasion guys including Hypo, Nighthawk, Herald of Torment, Bloodline Keeper, Kokusho, Nekrataal, Sheoldred, Lingering Souls and Baneslayer. I had limited equipment and spot removal but the deck crushed my opponents as I went 2-0 (4-0). About the Master:
Match 1 Game 1 I went T-1 Dark Ritual into Master on the draw and he went the distance vs Izzet. This was so hot.
Match 1 Game 2 I played him as a later game flier with a few spirits & Bloodline Keeper in play against a Maze of Ith. He provided the extra punch needed to close the game.
Match 2 Game 2 I played Master with a Sheoldred in play & my opponent at 11. I had Thoughtseized my opponent the same turn I played Master so I had lethal on board.
So...yeah. Quite impressed with this card's debut in my Cube. Despite the absence of black aggro support he did a ton of damage by himself.
I didn't think about his drawback in "worst case scenario" terms until now but they must have an instant removal spell to get card advantage (if they kill him during your next upkeep) and sorcery removal is a 1-for-1.
I won't make a blanket statement about what Cube size should include him but I will say that he's worth testing in *every* Cube to at least see if he's what your Cube is looking for. I know he joins Mana Confluence and Banishing Light as the only cards to definitely make it in my 540 from this set.
Tested him out today,
Monoblackaggro vs Artifacts
match 1 I didn't see him
vs Gruul monsters/fires of yavimaya archetype
Match 2, game 1, he chumpblocked angel of serenity, who i really need to take out.
Game 2. Master of the feast was the only black card that could have won me the game. My opponent played ensnaring bridge, when niethere of us had any artifact removal available, i had board presence. (Recurring nightmare, kitchen finks, massacre wurm, skinrender, is a soft lock) We were both going to deck, and i was going to do it a card sooner then him, but master of the feast's drawback won me the game.
Not too bad; I've stolen a few games with him and a Dark Ritual turn 1. He helps Black aggro quite a lot. I'd rank him third behind Ophiomancer and Flesh Carver, but there's quite a gap between the demon and those two.
I like Nighthawk more than him, as well as the other ones mentioned above. I think he's about on the same level as Hypnotic Specter. Great card for sure.
He hits really hard. I think it's probably the 4th or 5th best black 3cc creature. It never did anything anywhere outside of cube, but he's a hell of a beatdown critter. Can't argue with the results.

I think the GB(u) "Dredge" Strength of the Fallen standard deck runs/ran it. It's got a ton of enchantment creatures like Master, Herald of Torment, Nighthowler, Nyx Weaver, Pharika, God of Affliction, Eidolon of Blossoms, Doomwake Giant, Courser of Kruphix, and then Whip of Erebos and Strength of the Fallen.
