Welcome to the Enchantress Compendium!
*Please Note: This thread is a WIP*
I want to start off by going over the purpose and goals for this thread, as I hope for it to be a constructive thread that members can find if they are looking to add an Enchantress-like archetype to their Cubes. For this to work, I wish to keep any feedback constructive in the sense of what this thread is trying to achieve - rather than simply why Enchantress does or does not work in Cube.
To provide a detailed list of Enchantment oriented cards, their roles, and their flexibility, for people interested in trying this archetype in their Cube.
• Provide readers with a background on the Enchantress archetype •
• Give details on Enchantment oriented cards for an Enchantress archetype •
• Provide readers with pros and cons of the Enchantress archetype •
• Rethink how we discuss content in the Cube Card and Archetype subsection •
Enchantress is a deck type traditionally centered around various Enchantress cards in Magic. Argothian Enchantress laid the foundation for many cards that would eventually allow this archetype to find its way into various formats over the years and, eventually, with enough options, it may find its way into various Cubes. One of the main reasons this archetype can be difficult to pull off in Cube, is that it has a hard time meeting critical mass with effective cards and it can fall flat when it does not accumulate enough pieces - much like any archetype in a limited environment. Enchantress in the Cube format, requires a few more cards that can siphon off the importance of enchantments and for this reason, it is not necessarily a traditional Enchantress deck.
Why Enchantress?
Enchantress is a unique and fun archetype, that aims to utilize a lot of great enchantments as well as some otherwise obscure ones. If you are looking for something that is a bit more out there, and want to have some fun technical interactions in your Cube, Enchantress is a great option.
You will appreciate this archetype in a lower power level Cube, as it provides a strong presence in a weaker environment.
Why Not Enchantress?
Enchantress suffers from a lower power level of card selection compared to many of the common Cube cards, and it's lack of efficient redundancy is a bit of a hindrance. The deck wants to utilize a lot of cards that other decks can make good use of, which can make or break the Enchantress deck during a draft.
You will not appreciate this archetype if you have a higher power level Cube, as it's card selection has a weak presence in a stronger environment.
Enchantment Matters Cards By Color
Enchantress decks have historically been GW but have also included various tertiary colors.
Enchantment Matters Cards By Role
Enchantress decks have historically taken on the role of each of the three major archetypes in Magic: Aggro, Midrange, and Control.

Archetypes Enchantress Plays Well With

Yes! This is how you build an OP. Looking forward to exploring this all more once it's complete!
I have been wanting to do a thread like this for a while now, and with Commander 2015 I have been interested in some of these weaker possible archetypes. I figured now is as good of a time as any to try and kick off one of them. Daxos the Returned was one of the Commander 2015 cards I really liked as a card but is not really a card that cuts the jib for cube, much like Enchantress as an archetype. Commander cards are usually like this though, made to be built around but otherwise fairly lackluster for most cubes.
I like the idea of building archetypes around them for Cube though, and I would like to see more Cube discussions do this because it can be a lot of fun. I plan on doing more threads for various archetypes, with this template once I am done.
Updated the Cards by Color section. I think I hit the important ones, let me know if I am missing any. There are SO many crazy fringe/probably not relevant cards, but I wanted to include them.
I honestly did not expect the lists to be as long as they were, so I will be working on a section that narrows down the more playable cards as well. This section will also go over why these cards are staples and will follow the Cards by Role section.
For now, I am off to bed.
If anyone wants to sift through for more enchantment oriented creatures for all colors, it would help. If not, I can get to them tomorrow or a bit later this weekend. I intentionally left out a lot of the Theros Enchantment Creature cards, because a lot of them are SUPER bad and the lists were getting long.
Are you open at including the Aura theme as well ? Hexproof stuff and specifics.
Super high quality post, BTW!
I did not really plan on adding Hexproof creatures to the list, and for that reason, I did leave off a bunch of pump enchantments, like Goblin War Paint kind of stuff. If people would like me to add that to the mix, I am not opposed to it.
Yep, looking forward to following this. Enchantress is an awesome archetype that I've not seen explored a lot in cube. We were all hoping for a quality enchantment fatty in Theros to justify getting Academy Rector involved again.

I have been tempted to test of Chromanticore, but it's pretty weak as a Rector target, unfortunately.
We've been playing kind of a custom multiplayer game lately whenever we only have 3 players. Players start at 18 life and only attack to the left (or right if playing counterclockwise). The game ends when the player you are attacking dies as opposed to a last man standing. We tried starting at 16 life but it was too aggro friendly so we bumped it to 18, though I would want to try it at 17.
Anywho, since it's such a casual format I also wanted to introduce archetype packs where you could trade in your entire sideboard (you can only keep 24 cards you drafted) in exchange for a pack containing 5 archetype specific cards. This way we could play with archetypes that would otherwise not make it into a smaller list. Do you think Enchantress is possible with just 5 specific cards that aren't normally run in a cube?
One of the reasons Enchantress is not really that strong of an archetype, is that it does not do enough powerful stuff without a lot of redundancy to create more value than what your typical opponent is doing. In constructed formats, this has primarily been by means of cantripping a good portion of your deck on the cheap and playing everything you can all at once, or using something like Words of War to start killing them by the natural action of cantripping.
In singleton, limited formats, this is much harder to do because you do not have that redundancy. You have to offset that by running more cards that value off enchantments. For this reason, Cube has not really found a home for Enchantress because there isn't enough cards that are on par with typical cube cores - that can keep up with the rest of the cube. This is why it is much better in a lower power cube environment. Having to keep up with decks like Reanimator and such, is a tall glass to fill.
I would say you are likely going to need a lot more support than 5 cards, since Enchantress decks usually need about 8 of the actual Enchantresses in order to kind of do what it wants to do, which is cycle through a bunch of cards on the cheap.
Can someone who has run this archetype, tell me if they think it would be possible to have a mini-enchantment theme with the playable new Oaths? It has to be powerfull enough to hold its own in a high power 450 cube.

Well, I'm running Oath of Nissa among my Enchantress suite, and it's doing fine. Would I find room for the others at 450? Dunno. Cramming both an Enchantress and a Superfriends archetype in at the same time sounds like a challenge (one I'd be up for, but a challenge nonetheless).

For the record, my Multiplayer cube has run an Enchantress archetype for some time with an amount of success - very popular amongst the playgroup (and they are usually suggesting potential new cards to be added to this, too).
Currently running Enchantress's Presence and Eidolon of Blossoms to pick the cards up, Sigil of the Empty Throne as a win-con (as well as Ancestral Mask, Luminarch Ascension and Cathars' Crusade, which are capable of generating wins), and a whole mess of Selesnya utility to help trigger (e.g. Oblivion Ring, Quarantine Field, Seal of Primordium, Pacifism, Lignify etc. etc.).
I find it ironic that it all lands in the same colours as Aura Shards and Fracturing Gust (the archetype's two mortal enemies in my cube).
