I've been enjoying her since re-inclusion. I disagree with the earlier notion that it's just a good green card that can be tossed into any deck, but there are certainly shells in the cube that can use her to her full potential, and she can be a reasonable pickup for those specific decks.
I just got to use her in a green midrange beatdown deck over the weekend and was reminded of how good she can be in the right shell. I agree with wtwlf123. She's not a green powerhouse, but in the right deck she's super good.
I think she misses the cut in the majority of green midrange decks, and without very specific support (in multiples) she's not particularly good. But as part of a package of almost exclusively token/anthem cards, she can be an above-average performer.
What impressed me was how well she worked in a grindy shell, with SOME token/anthem cards.
I was able to play plenty of cards like hymn to tourach, sylan library, abrupt decay, thoughtseize, maelstrom pulse, damnation. In a traditional token shell you could only have room for maybe 2 or 3 of these effects.
What's nice about nissa + sorin, or nissa + bitterblossom is that, not only does the pairing win the game very quickly. The pairing is very difficult for the answers in cube to interact with. If they 1 for 1 your planeswalkers, you get a bit of value. If they wrath your board, you still have 2 non-creature permanents generating value. Any one of them can take over the game by themselves eventually.
I guess I finally realized her value as a card advantage engine, not just an immediate threat or an anthem. Some decks are a lot better suited to take advantage of this than others.
I STILL wouldn't play her in a dedicated green beat down deck or in a heavy green ramp deck.. or in a rock deck without at least 2-3 other highly synergistic cards (Gideon, lingering souls, bitterblossm, Sorin, skull clamp).
How is this Nissa holding up for people today? I am looking for cuts in green and while she's been in my 540 power cube since day one I don't remember a time when she's really shined. Looking to see if we just haven't drafted the right deck with her, or if the competition is just too stiff these days.
I consider Nissa a staple. Being green means she can come down on turn 2 easily. Making tokens has a lot of synergy (Skullclamp / Natural Order / Gaea's Cradle / Craterhoof / etc), and her -2 can represent a lot of damage later in the game.
Currently Nissa, Voice of Zendikar is the 23rd most represented green card in the Xmage 3-0 archives (setting the date filter from beginning of 2019 to present)
Thank you very much for this response! It seems maybe we are underestimating her in my group, in that case. I will leave her in for now and see if I can't get her to shine in the near future.
I love her for token decks and sacrifice builds, where each of her abilities is amplified in value. As a generic midrange card, she's cuttable ...but as an archetype support card, she's great if you play the decks she can shine in.
The "problem" with Nissa, Voice of Zendikar is that she's probably the weakest of the three mana planeswalker:
- Liliana of the Veil
- Liliana, the Last Hope
- Chandra, Acolyte of Flame
- Saheeli, Rai
- Dack Fayden
- Wreen and Six (2 mana, but also fits into this category)
- Oko, Thief of Crowns
- Daretti, Ingenious Iconoclast
- Teferi, Time Raveler
The other planeswalkers come down way too fast and can by themselves just completely take over the game and snowball the game out of control. Nissa just doesn't have this type of effect.
I have her in my cube, but I'm not that impressed.

By herself, yeah she's pretty weak in comparison to others. However:
- Being green means she can come down on turn 2
- She has more synergies than any other 3-cmc walker (Natural Order fodder / tokens / +1/+1 counters / Skullclamp fodder / etc)
- Can have a much more immediate impact late game with her -2 ability
If I have a green creature based deck, she always makes the maindeck for me.
