Teferi, Hero of Dominaria 3UW
Legendary Planeswalker
+1: Draw a card. At the beginning of the next end step, untap two lands.
−3: Put target nonland permanent into its owner's library third from the top.
−8: You get an emblem with "Whenever you draw a card, exile target permanent an opponent controls."
[4]
Not a bad planeswalker that is for sure, but does it make the cut?
Yeah, it's not necessarily better than Jace, Unraveler of Secrets. Would be hard to justify an Azorius card when a mono blue equivalent already exists. I think I actually like Dovin Baan also.
He's kinda basic, which is why it's so easy to compare him to all these other planeswalkers. Nobody should be ashamed to play him, but Venser, the Sojourner, Dovin Baan, and Narset Transcendent all have more interesting game plans than this Teferi.
There are probably ~10 azorius cards Im not playing that are completely cubeable, and that's not an exaggeration, so at this point the cards need to either 'wow!' or gtfo. This falls into the latter.
If you really like planeswalkers and want to cram them everywhere you can, I think this is replaces Fractured Identity for you. But yeah, I don't think it's better than what we have.

Even if you love walkers, I don't think Fractured Identity is the card you replace. It may be the best Azorius card.
FI is by far the best Azorius card IMO, head and shoulders above the rest. It's the card that makes me want to play azorius the most, it's such a beating.
I like Ojutai more since I could just play Jace. Teferi is too reminiscent of Jace, Unraveler of Secrets / Ob Nixilis Reignited, two very average planeswalkers.
Well, I like Ob Nixilis (relatively, black five drops suck) and recently added Unraveler (after the rules change) so the similarity argument doesn't convince me. Teferi's plus ability allows you to cast him on turn five and leave counter mana up, a fairly unique trait. It meshes very well with permission on future turns also. It is an answer to all types of permanents, not just creatures. His ultimate is also a very effective way to win, especially compared to the basically blank ultimate of Unraveler (who is, consequently, not a win condition).

Not for me but that is because I am usually looking for excuses not to run a walker. I agree that the untapping lands is really being underestimated. It reminds me of Gilded Lotus in a way. Not only can you protect it with the mana you get (casting removal, a wall of omens, or counterspell, or bounce) You then have 7=8 mana the next turn. For me that is a pretty important threshhold for my U/W control decks. You need big mana for Upheavel, Karn, Spell+counter backup, Consecrated Sphinx etc. Ramp is really rare in those colors and I am often playing things like Worn Powerstone, Thran Dynamo, or Hedron Archive to achive it.
I don't really buy the comparison but Ob was way better than it got credit for and can take over games. Dovin is garbage because the card draw is on a minus. Jace is not card advantage with the minus also, unlike Teferi. Going to the deck is so much better than the hand.
If this Teferi untapped any permanent like the big one I think I would slam him. But as is I think people in the 540 area should take a look at him. No he is not Venser but I think Venser is overrated because of people's love of blink. Teferi gives mana, cards, and removal in one package and I think will take over games even more than Ob.
I have no idea why people are downplaying this card. It is much better than Unraveler Jace. The bounce hitting any non-land permanent is huge, bouncing another PWer for example is really nice. The fact that you "Unexpectanly Absent" the permanent, gives you card advantage and three turns before you see it again. BTW, that same cost for UA is also 5 cmc, but with this card, you have a PWer left behind that can start ticking up next turn. Plus Oneing while drawing a card is good, but untapping of lands makes Teferi's +1 better than big Jace or Ob. It won't be uncommon to have a counterspell or removal up on the same turn and you get an extra draw to find something too. Teferi is artificially a 3 CMC PWer. I would play Teferi if Fractured Identity was not printed. This card is definitely testable and is probably the 5th best WU card. Also, he is better than Venser for sure, wtf Venser blows, only good for cute ETB shenanigans. I think LSV built an ETB deck once in MTGO cube and still did not take Venser saying it was that bad.
I have no idea why people are downplaying this card.
It's a multicolored card, it's pretty much the reason everyone has given for not wanting it.
Yeah it's cubeable, but so are a lot of cards. And saying it's the 5th best Azorius card is a pretty debatable statement, azorius is stacked. I saw Spell Queller doing work last night on the MODO cube and that's not even a card I'm playing, there are just too many cards to run something that is not clearly better than a lot of options while being in a slot that neither color is lacking with i.e. 5 drops.
I don’t think this card is so much better than Jace that I’d spend an Azorius slot over it. My cube would have to be pretty huge for me to consider Teferi and the blue slot will be more open than the Azorius slot at that point. Just because Detention Sphere is better than the other O-Ring variants doesn’t mean I’m running it over them.
The bar is extremely high for multicolored planeswalkers and Azorius cards / colors in general. Teferi does absolutely nothing special and has no specific niche nor offers any archetype support.
From a good stuff perspective, he is around 5th. The reason I brought up FI is the fact that I would not put another 3 drop over Teferi, I don't think SQ and DS are necessarily better anyways. FI directly competes with Teferi at 5 CMC, more so than the other WU cards and that is its biggest problem.
Would play Teferi over all these:
- Detention Sphere
- Dragonlord Ojutai
- Spell Queller
- Sphinx’s Revelation
Teferi does absolutely nothing special and has no specific niche nor offers any archetype support.
I disagree. He is versatile and goes in both Midrange and Control shells. Who cares about niches when most of the cards we choose is based on power and value. What niche does FI go in? What about DS? SV is literally another wrath. Baloney. Plus Teferi does support ramp in its colors.
You can say the same thing for half of the WU Top 10. SV is just another wrath, boring. DS is a slightly better O-ring. Zzzzzz. Mage is a better Jellyfish. SR is an over-costed draw spell that works good in only control shells. The unique +1 and UA on a stick makes Teferi at least as interesting as Dragon and Spell Queller.

Niche is less important when power level is extremely high, like FI, but it matters when only so many slots exist for a card. FI is a card I feel that any UW deck would be remiss not running if it had the option, but Teferi feels kind of replaceable as a generally 'good stuff' planeswalker and just being good in midrange/control is how you would describe a lot of cube cards that aren't made for aggro so that's not really much of a 'role' it fills. And it's a 5 drop in UW.
I actually think it's kinda brutal that Fractured Identity exists because of all the options we have at 5 for UW, and that's another aspect to consider. How many 5 mana spells do you really need access to? In comparison to 3s like Geist/Mage/DS/SQ/etc, I have so fewer spots in my decks to stack 5s on 5s that it's more likely Teferi won't get played because I already have Treachery/Bribery/Mystic Confluence/all the white 5 creatures/Clocknapper/Arcane Savant/Meloku/etc. If I have 3-4 of those in my pool, why am I drafting Teferi? I drafted mono white last night and had access to literally every white 5 after the draft was one, adding in another color of 5s to choose from really illustrates how special a 5 drop has to be to make it in cube in those colors.
I don't think he does anything actually special that makes me want to throw him in over those cards, not that he's necessarily bad to any degree but excess is important to consider for cube.
Fractured Identity = insane power and value
Teferi = average power and value
Azorius is a great example of mono vs multicolored utility cards and how they relate to cube. While Detention Sphere / Supreme Verdict are just slight upgrades to boring cards like Oblivion Ring / Day of Judgment, those are key effects in general. The bigger the cube becomes, the more important those roleplayer cards are. A lot of my card ranking is based on the needs of the cube at X size. Teferi ain’t plugging any holes for me unless my cube becomes insanely large. The card is nowhere near my radar, Azorius has so many more useful options.
