I think this card is neat. It's a good card in the artifact.dec, it's good in token shells, and it's pretty decent on its own too. I like how it can be activated to upgrade tokens at instant speed, so I can chump-block with one and then upgrade it. And it's a hell of a mana sink if you get flooded. It can chump an attacker or start building a board for 2. Then if you have the mana to untap it, you can make tokens and upgrade them in the same round, OR create multiple tokens if you get tons of mana. It's cheap and relatively versatile, and it works with other servo/thopter-makers that are in the cube now. I might test this out at 540 since we like both token shells and the artifact.dec a lot.
Yeah, I can dig it. A Blue deck can easily drop this turn 1, hold open counter mana and make little nerds when nothing is really going on. You'll also be ready for a turn 3 tinker if you go that way.
That's a cool observation about Nalaar interactions, too. I think just about any variety of Tezzeret would enjoy having it as well.
I was thinking about this card myself earlier. This fills a lot of really interesting roles: A Trinket Mage target that can grind out long-term advantage, a Stax piece that can create and sacrifice lots of permanents for cheap, both an enabler and outlet for big Tolarian Academy turns, a way to buff servos/thopter producers, or even just a nice instant speed mana sink for more controlling decks. I do worry it might not have enough raw power for cube, but getting to make your first Servo on T2 if you need is a really nice option that a lot of token producers don’t offer. Definitely worth a test I imagine.
Very interesting card. Appropriately costed all around, I feel like this might be too durdly for both midrange / the artifact decks though. I don't need it, still deciding wether or not I want it though. This does go well with Tolarian Academy though, so there's that.
It's durdly but I think it's definitely worth testing. It only costs one (hey Trinket Mage!) and it can cheaply poop out tokens to clog the board if need be. If you only make a couple Servo tokens throughout the game it's not a terrible investment.
It has an obvious home in both token and artifact based decks, but I think it could also see play in stax and planeswalker based midrange lists. It's not a terrible control card either as you can hold open mana for countermagic/removal and pump out tokens if you get the opportunity. Control decks love early game ways to clog the board.
What I LOVE about this card is that it can upgrade Servos into beefy 4/4 Constructs for only 4 mana. It's expensive to go from zero to Construct in one turn, sure, but the flexibility of it and the low opportunity cost really entice me. I think this card could be a winner in my 540. I'll definitely be testing this and I have high hopes.
This is absolutely my favorite card in C18 so far. It's the only one yet I can really see myself putting effort and money into ordering. Any one-drop with this much going on is worth looking at, and I love the way this scales.
This card is absolutely fun, but I don't think its cubeworthy in small to medium lists. It's way too slow by itself and only combos with a few select cube cards.
My gut tells me it's too low impact for the amount of mana needed to be sunk into it, but there's a high enough chance I'm wrong that im tempted to test.
Being a 1 mana artifact is nice... an effecient CMC when you are dumping your hand for academy/balance/time twister.. And increasing the toolbox of trinket mage is nice.
One cool use will be to use the servo's to chump block, and then "sacrifice" them and upgrade them at instant speed.
This card reminds me of Hangarback Walker and Walking Ballista regarding the ability to take over a game due to their value.
It is a lot slower, but it survives more sweepers. Generally, it plays more defensively. I guess the most effective way to use it is by chump blocking with the token and sacrificing it into the next step of evolution...
Sometimes you need a flying blocker or something that holds a sword with evasion, so that is another small plus for the card.
My cube has a token theme for each color, so I will most likely test this out.
This card looks super fun, and I'm excited to take it for a spin! Will probably take out Thaumatic Compass, which has been medium and just ends up in a random deck as opposed to actually supporting a specific archetype.
I feel like this is too slow and mana intensive for the impact by itself. But it lends to multiple interactions so the more you have it then it can make the cut in your cube.
Interactions:
Trinket Mage
Tokens (Convoke, Improvise, Affinity)
ETB triggers (Soul Warden, Reckless Fireweaver)
Death triggers (Disciple of the Vault)
Special mention: thopters (will not cost anything to upgrade thopters to 4/4)
The more you have this the more feasible it gets.
In an artifact cube that I have this is golden. I may even first pick this.
I would have overlooked this if not for the thread, and there's a good chance it will be too durdly in a deck not built to abuse it (seriously, how good is that thopter-to-construct ability!) but 1 mana artifacts are few and far between. There are some synergies there and it does work late game and could help through mana screw by killing off 2/1 critters. May give it a go.
I just ordered this card, as we run an artifact.dec package in unpowered, and it often is looking for mana sinks. This fits the bill. I'll try and remember to report back.
Adding it to my cube once it arrives in the post. Thopters are a pretty common creature token but even if your not making thopters decks that are looking to hold up mana will be happy to make servos on end step if they didn't need the mana.
2 to blank a non-trampling creature isn't too bad either, especially if it is trading for a real card.
Its slow but it seems like a value generating machine.
Card was pretty good the first time it saw play. Dropping it turn 1 means every time you have 2 mana left it becomes a servo. It was even useful as a sacrifice outlet once against a big lifelinker. Jury's still out but it's not a bad card by any means.
It's been really good for us, and consistently so. I wish someone did podcasts that wanted me on as a guest; I could do an entire episode on why this card is good. Far too many words to type, lol.
Have been pretty impressed with it so far after a week. It saw play in an opposition deck and was pretty good for a cmc 1 artifact. The mono-brown deck hasn't been built since we put it in.

On its own, that sounds like a lot of work for a Thopter.
